Yeah...yeah...hurts to miss that one.

Welp not what I totally envisioned the first two games resulting in L's. They played well against Vegas...should have blown them out but MAF was good and they couldn't get it in the net despite ample prime opportunities. Vegas won't be world beaters but I think they'll be super competitive throughout the season. A lot of blame on Kari from the fans but can't blame him when the defense just plays bad in front of him and leaves the man they're supposed to be on e.g. Hamhius on the 2nd Neal goal and on top of just scoring 1 goal through the first 5 periods. And for the love of Pete Honka needs to be playing....he's so good and dynamic I think he'll help the offense and scoring dept significantly. On to the Red Wings tomorrow night and hoping for the first W in the Hitch 2.0 era.

Welp! I know there's a few hockey fans on here so I thought I'd start an on-going thread for the new season. It's that time of the year where the NHL has officially begun and our beloved Dallas Stars are starting their season tonight against the expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights. It should be a powerful night tonight at the AAC with the rememberance/tribute of the Las Vegas attack victims and the terrible loss of the absolute great Dave Strader. And on top of that I think Grubes will be playing a very good dose of Tom Petty in the arena. This should be quite an interesting and fun year as Dallas clearly won the off-season with the additions of Bishop, Methot, Radulov & Hanzal but obviously I think probably the biggest addition is bringing Hitch back. There's just something right with the hockey vibe here in Dallas with Hitch back here but maybe it's just nostalgia. I'm hoping it all translates to wins and winning hockey on the ice and I'm optimistic it'll happen. Lindy was a good dude and all but I just wasn't a big fan of the way he handled a lot of things his 4 seasons here. I'm expecting a big year because they just seem to have all the pieces in place and I'm a believer in Hitch. Dallas is in a gauntlet of a division but I think they'll be fine. I won't claim division winner of course but most definitely a playoff team and a series win or two in the playoffs. It all starts tonight and my hockey pants are going nuts.

I never disputed that Mean Green wasn't around but I'm talking about official & primary nicknames. So if they played on TV the announcers would call them the North Texas Eagles. I even remember the college football games on Sega/Nintendo in the 90's and seeing Eagles, not Mean Green. When I started attended UNT it was even on the UNT history page/timeline history somewhere that mentioned they officially changed the nickname to Mean Green from Eagles. Unless all of it is false this is why I remember it.

Fixed. Growing up in the area I and everyone that knew of NT knew the school as the North Texas Eagles. The official nickname was changed and I still think it was a bad decision.

I think we officially changed the nickname in the early 2000's. I still maintain we should have remained the Eagles as of the official nickname and have a secondary nickname as the Mean Green. Still a head scratcher to me on why RV and the SGA during that time let this happen.

It was on available ESPN3 so one could have easily streamed it..

I'm a recruiting idiot so I just usually defer to the experts or people here that are really educated about how all this recruiting stuff goes. The level of recruiting does concern me that we lose out to several peer schools. At some point that's going to catch up if the coaching isn't lights out awesome. I've always said that in the position we're in...while getting an ace recruiter is great and all, I won't expect to get great recruits until we win and do it consistently for a few years. With that happening I've believed we need a coaching staff that can truly coach and develop and that means coaching up the team mightily. Boise State did and has done that for years and it's done wonders for them. I'm fine with SL not being the ace recruiter type because that's where a good staff can help with that. I guess time will tell on what this hire is going to do and we'll start seeing it the last third of the this season and next season. I think UTSA is a really interesting subject. Many here have completely trashed on them but I give them nothing but props as they've done a great job getting off the ground and the thing that they have is they didn't have any history prior which means no history of just being losers and putrid. While we've been around forever our history tells the general public and recruits that we stink and we have that losers mentality and culture. Kids are just going gravitate towards something like UTSA IMO and I Just think the way they've started the whole program has been nothing short of impressive and nowthey are not only in a conference with us in just a few short years it looks like they have totally surpassed us program wise and most importantly perception wise IMO.

NT would have found a way to lose by 35

Given just how bad both NT and SMU have been in football in recent history neither of them should look past anything.

BREAKING: Lamar game may "possibly" be cancelled per Lamar HC
Green Mean replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
For obvious reasons I want to get this game played but if it's not possible then I'm fine with the rescheduling. And perhaps this is a really stupid question but is there a way to charter a plane for Lamar to get here rather than taking buses? If that's possible why wouldn't that be the obvious option at least from a travel/logistics standpoint and not considering the mindset of the coaches/players etc which is a whole different thing. As for the Astros and Rangers I think there's been overreaction on both sides and think there were two sides to the story despite Texas looking bad on the outside but I mean seriously I don't even think it should even be a major concern at this point. -
Will Kiffin Be Gone After 1 Year?
Green Mean replied to AustinFromUNT's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Coaches want to coach at the biggest stage and try to play for P5 championships and national championships. I think it's rather naïve to think and assume SL won't look to move on to a better job if he finds a reasonable amount of success here. In a perfect world we'd love to find our Gary Patterson but that's just not reasonable. TCU has very well compensated him, given him great facilities because he's won and won big. Let's face it if SL is able to win at North Texas of all places don't think it won't go unnoticed. I'll also add that if this does indeed happen then that's a damn good thing because that means he's probably planted some good seeds here and it'll be the AD's and schools jobs not to royally screw it up. Yes if Kiffin is successful at FAU even for just 1 year then I expect him to get some inquiries for a better job with more pay. I don't think many coaches strive to coach in the SBC, MAC, CUSA for the long haul if they're good. I think another thing we forget is while Kiffin has been in the coaching scene for a really long time he's still really young at just 42 years old. He has PLENTY ahead of him. -
I wouldn't care all that much for seeing Chelsea speak either. That said I don't think it's a reach to question the decision to pick junior and have UNT displayed all over the series. Hey it's Ernie's money and he's more than free to do what he wishes but the fact that UNT is associated with it in some way or another is what I care about. We've seen junior be on tv and talk for a while now and I just don't see that he has anything at all to offer. You can thank Trump and clan for that. Again before Trump came into the picture I"m not saying everything was rosy and perfect but it wasn't what it is today and has become and far more normal.

Improving The Game Day Experience
Green Mean replied to AustinFromUNT's topic in Mean Green Football
Probably not a popular opinion and I'm not saying eliminate it completely but I would really really be in favor of the band constantly playing fly like an eagle over and over and over and over again that that too including basketball games. Just my opinion tho. -
For their sake I think it's best to not have it on campus as it just wouldn't go well. As for a conservative option he's not really a good option as a speaker period. I too am open minded and willing to give someone a chance to talk but we've seen this guy for several months and he's got a big bag of nothing. I attended the Giuliani event and this was the time when he was on Fox News almost every day during the campaigns and there was some caution from some people for I spoke to for obvious reasons but as you said at the very least he had skins on the wall so it was fine.

SMU has that connection and history going back to the SWC and that perception has always been there. SMU's old guard and alumni is still going super strong but they've been so bad nobody goes to their games either and their newer alums are quite apathetic. Their recent basketball success is probably changing things but let's not act like losing and irrelevance don't create apathy.
-
And what's created apathy? There is a clear and direct correlation to all this. No matter what, it's almost impossible to get taken seriously from the general public if you don't a darn thing in athletics. We could fill every bar and restaurant with NT gear and I'd be all for that but nobody will give a rip if we continue to suck. Perpetual losers don't create pride, tradition and pageantry which some folks on here always speak of.
-
I do not believe I am aware of the John Williams route. I know about the season ticket packages but not specifically for the SMU game. Where can I go to find out more? Thank you in advance sir.

The only name change I would look into is having our official nickname going back to the Eagles. I mean growing up I always knew it as the North Texas Eagles. We can still be the Mean Green as well and it's still ours but I'd really like to have a conversation with RV and the SGA when we made that change back in I want to say 2001ish. It also eliminates EVERYBODY saying that got our Mean Green name because of Mean Joe Greene. But that is just me and it probably never happens. As for North Texas, UNT, NT etc...why not have it all? Speaking of USC, they're most known as that but I also frequently hear Southern Cal, Southern California, and SC. What does the moniker change really accomplish? All of this boils down to athletics success in the major sports. If you win, the perception and apathy will change...it's not rocket science. The off-season cannot end soon enough.

Win and do it consistently. It's not our job to market the product and get people interested. I've pretty much given up on going out of my way to get people to come to games. I may inform and offer them to tag along w/me if I have an extra ticket but other than that it's their call. If people want to do something, they will do it, if they don't then they won't come. There are people that get paid to do this job on a full time basis for the AD/University. That said even those people can do so much if there just isn't a whole lot of substance to sell and market. The incentive of telling people "because it's your university" etc etc just doesn't cut it these days. There's way too many other options out there especially if you have a family. You don't just change culture...it takes time but really it takes winning and winning consistently for a good amount of time. In addition to that, the amount of winning has to result in being ranked in the T25 somewhere and/or finish in the T25 at the end of the CFB season. Oh and you need to beat some teams that people know...preferably a couple of upper echelon programs...people really notice when you do that. Doing bits like free things like tuition, books etc is great and all but I don't really want to bribe them to come. They will just leave when the contest is over and it won't make them any more interested in coming in future games unless of course we just win win win. While it does still somewhat irk me that so many people opt to stay outside our beautiful stadium, I just say at least they're in the vicinity and they haven't had enough reason and incentive going inside given the product they've been exposed too.

Dallas News: Best in Texas Stadiums
Green Mean replied to unt_rocket09's topic in Mean Green Football
I've never really had much issue with the Alamodome...I mean look at the very least you never have to worry about any kind of weather factor and everything is climate controlled. In general I can't say I am over critical about any stadium/arena/park etc. I love Apogee...it's beautiful as hell and yes I am biased but any outsider that I've brought to the stadium agrees with me and says it's a real jewel. -
Several people in my family subscribes to Sling which mainly uses it via Roku and Amazon Fire TV devices and I've used it also & I think it's really good and it'll only get better. I think the UI could be a little better but on the whole I would definitely recommend it as overall quality and picture wise I don't notice any difference and I don't think I've ever experienced much buffering. I haven't switched over to Sling streaming yet personally because there's other companies as well that I want to research and look at before making the switch. Good thing about all these streaming plans is there's no contract or anything so you can sign on and cancel at anytime and can try out all the companies/plans you want and try it out before deciding which one you like best.

Beyond my comprehension why some would look down upon scheduling a series w/Houston. If there's a school that UNT should look at and try to emulate Houston is the perfect example especially since very similar to us and are in our state. Look I'd love to have some P5 home/home scheduling as well and I'm hopeful we get those but for now if we can get something with UH then I'm totally fine with it.

Corby just said that people have known about it for most of the day but it wasn't leaked out and said this has to do with health issues that he's having in his heart per rumors. SL can get more as an OC assuming he was recruited to do it but everyone knows that the ultimate goal is being a HC. I don't see how anyone would go from a HC to a coordinator position when SL is even considered a good young and up and comer.
