Why does the Belt have divisions if they are going to seed by total conference record?
-
Many probably don't know that Shelby Metcalf had signed Joe Hamiliton to a SWC basketball letter of intent to attend A$M where he would have become the first black to receive a scholarship. Joe had actually been placed at the juco by NT's coach Spika. SW loi's were only binding to SW teams and Joe make the right decision to come to NT and become argruable the best player in school history.

DRC article on DD/ Mattress Mac add, Presidents/

I am sure that the NT administration would have had no problem complying with your request before being lambasted in the media. Now who knows? If you really were concerned about DD being honored than you obviously would have pursued it in another way. A poorly composed vindictive tirade in the paper is not going to sway many opinions. I am now editing the post because I now understand the McIngvale genius. I was totally wrong. Because of the article, the administration may be more than glad to get the McIngvale name off the practice field and rename it for DD.

What would you call heavy promotions? As I recall these games featured free food, a major prize, free tickets for several organizations, honors night for athletes, etc. It was a major and unusual effort on the part of the athletic department to get students involved with a team at the time who was a leader in the Division. Unfortunely it was also the time of a major burn out by the team. If you were there and believe those attendence numbers than you also probably think there were over 25K at the SMU football game.

With NO defeat, NT wins outright Western Division Championship. JONESBORO(11/12/06) - The Arkansas State volleyball team closed out its regular season with a 3-0 (34-32, 30-22, 30-24) sweep of New Orleans Sunday at Valley View High School. The Lady Indians finished the regular season at 21-13 overall, with a 12-6 Sun Belt record.

I hope that NT can start filling up the Superpit. But if you went to the games last year you know that the crowd for the Houston game was due to Houston fans being in the area for a bowl game. The other two with over 4000 were due to heavy promotions and very generous counts. I am all for generous counts and promotions but less than 2/3 of the lower bowl does equal 5000 fans. My guess is that actual attendence was much closer to 3000.

Actually the quick turn around probably hurt them, however I doubt it came close to making up for the home court advantage they enjoyed. I thought the whole team was going to foul out. Thankfully NT has a very deep team. Maybe this is the year that JJ's team take a big step upward. Great Win.

I wonder about the new facility. Writeup states almost a capacity crowd with attendence at 550. Doesn't seem like it may be big enough if interest in team keeps growing. Good problem to have.

I believe Jamario was as good as any back in the nation in his freshman year. I too do not know what has caused such a downfall in production. It appears to me that he is still very fast and is trying if anything too hard. He just seems to have lost his vision to see the field and find the crack in the defense. A poor offensive scheme, ineffective blocking and defenses keying on him have all let to drops in production; but even allowing for that he does not seem the same running back that was here in 2004.

Everything above is true, going to a game in the pit in the MVC days was as much fun as you can have at an athletic event. Students actually had to get tickets in advance and you still had to be there early to insure you got a seat. The equivalent now would be to be playing in the ACC with a 4000 seat gym as home court.

Dickey.....NT Athletics Hall of Fame inductee
GrandGreen replied to UNT_playmaker's topic in Mean Green Football
I agree, Video Eagle; DD has some solid accomplishments and time cures a lot of ills. I have wanted a change for a lot longer than most because I could not and still can't believe the things that come out of DD's mouth. However, I do think the 4 conference championships and 26 straight conference is a major achievement. Those that lamblast these accomplishments as meaningless because of the overall weakness of the conference should remember that NT did not dominate anything in the Southland. -
Win proves RV was right to fire Dickey
GrandGreen replied to MeanGreenZen's topic in Mean Green Football
Come on give DD a break. He has been terminated and is going to be criticized no matter if he wins or loses. I was not too pleased with his after game radio interview but there is no reason for him to change his spots at this point. My hope is that the team wins out and everyone goes on to better things. -
Good win for DD, Staff and team. This "Green Team" thing has got to be one of the wildest developments that I have ever seen. Your little used second string is much more effective than the starters that have played all year. Amazing

The grapevine says that DD walked into the locker room on Wednesday and told the players he had been fired because he "Couldn't Recruit. He then asked them how that made them feel?" I don't know why anyone is surprised, this is vintage DD. It only shows me that he wants to go out winning using the same old "us against the world" bs that he has used throughout his NT career to motivate the team.

DRC Mattress Mac may end funding for NT
GrandGreen replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
I believe that NT certainly owes Jim McIngvale thanks for his very generous donations over the last few years. I hope he continues to support the NT athletic program in the future. However, if the termination of DD means the lost of a major contributor; it is still absolutely the right decision. -
Does anyone know the status of Sam Owusu-Hemeng, based on his all star game performance he looked like the most promising of last years recruits? I have not seen him on the sidelines or any mention of him this year. Also what happened to Shawn Early? He looked in great shape at the beginning of the year and it was reported he had recovered from his injury but I don't remember him playing at all this year. Also is David Jackson the late transfer running back still on the team? Last, I. Thomas has gotten raves about his practice play; but has played limited minutes this year, has he still got health issues?

Firing a coach that took NT to the first bowl since leather helmets and has battled medical problems for the past two years, makes NT an easy target for self appointed sport "experts". Based on their limited knowledge, it seems heartless to terminate someone who has done so much for the program with so little in resources. An impression that DD has cultivated for the last nine years. I think in reality DD basically terminated himself with his "woe is me" and "us against the world" approach. Someone with only a fleeting knowledge of the program does not recognize the degree the program has fallen in the last three years.
-
In my opinion, NT has benefited greatly by having two great long term announcers in Dunham and Mercer. Both are not only first-rate announcers but are overall great supporters of the Mean Green. Dunham was not involved with making the decision to replace Mercer, he was only the replacement. The way Mercer was dismissed was shameful, but it was time to make a change.
-
Actually I think you can make a good case for the MUTS being rated a little higher. They have a better record, finished second in the conference and did not end the season with a 0-4 defeat. The soccer team remains the best program NT has but stating the obvious losing 3 out of their last 5 games and not being competitive against Denver ended any hope of them going any further.
