The defense played awful, of course the offense didn't help by keeping them on the field most of the game. The offense was just as bad, with very conservative play calling: I assume to shorten the game. Running up the middle on Alabama is something I doubt any team in the NCAA can do. Oh yes, the special teams on kickoffs and punts coverages were awful. I thought that Tune actually didn't play bad and the offensive line although overpowered on run plays, actually did fairly well on pass blocking. Good returns by Smith and Dunbar and Carey make some great catches. Hamilton actually looked good late aganst the reserves. I am sure someone on the defense had a decent game, but I didn't see it. Our punter did a good job but I am sure his average suffered as he started punting out of bounds in the last half as our coverage could not contain. I though I saw White in at defensive tackle. I hope NT didn't waste his redshirt because of this game.

How predictable, an expected blow out loss to the number 4 team and a chorus of no more money games from many of the fan base. No matter, that NT is only playing one guaranteed game this year and every team in the Belt plays one or more of these games. It is a fact of life for underfunded lower tier football programs. I don't think you would care as much, if NT would actually be competitive in the game as NT has been in the past and many other lower tier teams are able to do. By competitive, I don't necessarily mean close to winning but to at least not let the other team score on the vast majority of their possessions and have something close to an offense. The only more predictable response to these games is the ever popular take your money and avoid injury refrain. As it appears now, those fans expressing that wish should be satisfied.

Has The Flying Worm Turned Already This Season?
GrandGreen replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
Comparative scores are always misleading. Injuries are part of football. Can't do a lot about the weather. I would not be surprised that the end of the season doesn't bear out that Ohio turns out to be a very good football team, much better than Memphis, UAB and maybe better than KSU. New Hampshire by the way would have probably beat NT by thirty points last year. I still like NT's chances in the Belt, not predicting a championship; but a winning record should be in reach. This is a very young team that is still far away from playing its best ball of the year. We are all disappointed in an OT loss, but NT overall looked like the better team and that is something I didn't think was true in any game last year. -
Same ole macho bs. The problem is once someone decides to stand most of the game, he has effectively made the decision for whoever sits behind them. No matter, if they are old, infirm, or just short and find it difficult to look over someone's head or just prefer to enjoy the game from a sitting position. I'm am 6'3 and would never stand up for most of the game if I have a choice. I think it is just plain rude. Note, I am not stating that fans should stay glued to their seats, there are definitely times to stand. However, I don't understand the need to constantly stand for 3 hours and make a sport event some kind of marathon. I had the misfortune to be behind standers Saturday, and that certainly enhanced the game. Not only got to get rained on but got to stand for most of the game. Luckily I guess, my wife didn't attend or there would have some been a stand up confrontation. I stood rather than have some kind of altercation, but that not going to happen if I have others that can't see like children or my wife who is not going to stand to watch an entire football game. I suppose that means I am not a worthy fan in some's very myopic views, but so be it. I hope all you macho guys that espouse standing as a natural right of the real fan, never get old or injured or just tired enough to prefer sitting. On a positive not, I guess RV could make the new stadium an all standing venue and up the capacity substantially. .

It Doesn't Get Any Easier From Here
GrandGreen replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't think it gets any easier, but after the Alabama game, I am not sure it gets much harder. I'm not sure there is a better defensive team in the Belt than Ohio. NT is still a young team and makes far too many mistakes, but that should get better as the season progresses. A good defense and I think NT is developing one, should keep NT in most games. -
Yes, remember all the countless brawls that occurred before the taunting rules. The facts are that taunting is like obscenity. Everyone has a different opinion of what it is. The problem with the NCAA rules are that there are no concrete definitions of what is taunting and what it is not. The infamous choreographed grenade celebration is equated with spontaneous acts of joy like tossing the football into the air or other harmless acts. You may or not know that the NCAA is seriously considering making the penalties for taunting even more serious. In the future td celebrations may actually end up with taunting penalties that would nullify the score. It is somewhat confusing to me that a sport that is based on hard contact fills it is necessary to protect the players and I guess fans from getting their feelings hurt by taunting. Dang, I was not to happy to see all that celebration by the Ohio team after they had won the game. Maybe they should have forfeited for over celebration. There is no place in athletes for physical abuse. but I have a hard time with taunting penalties. Unless it is something that is unquestionably meant to "taunt" your opponent such as pointing to a downed player, going over to confront the opponents' bench, or something obviously meant to inflame or embarrass your opponents; then it should not be an infraction. In my view, actions that could just as easily be interpreted as enthusiasm should not be penalized. Are football players going to be traumatized by an opposing player goose stepping into the en zone, flexing his arms, dancing after a good play or tossing the ball into the air. Most players may be fired up to play harder by these actions but I doubt few are going to be emotional scarred or feel it is necessary to retaliate in an inappropriate way.

Very strange play calling. Went for it early and fumble, but then late in the game went for the tie not the win. It seems to me the odds would have been much better to go for a fourth and less than a yard than gong for a field goal with the weather as a factor than having to depend on your second team QB with a very shaky start and seemingly a big disadvantage in the kicking game to win in overtime. As it turned out, Tune performed great and the kicking game did not hurt NT and the decision looked less suspect. It took a miracle play on the part of Ohio and a very gutsy call to go for the two point conversion to beat NT.

Hey, I thought that FIU, seven overtime game was a lot of fun. Two very bad teams battling it out with lots of effort. Three games I will always remember in a very bad way: 1981 game in Tyler's one year against ULL at Lafayette. NT had just had a relatively good effort against UT, a 10-23 loss. There was a big write up in the Lafayette paper about how NT was the most "big time" school to ever play at Lafayette. NT lost 11-34 and was thoroughly dominated. 1982 game against a undefeated New Mexico team. NT had a 17-14 lead with time for one play, NM had the ball on about their 30. NM threw up a long sideline pass and there was no a NT defender close and won the game 20-17. The worst NT game I have seen. SMU coming back from the death penalty in 1989 played NT at Owens. With a team full of redshirts, SMU had lost the week before to Houston 21-95. SMU trounced NT 35-9 and it was not that close. Total lack of effort from Corky's team.

I don't understand your comment at all. Why would anyone be embarrassed by who a BB team plays? Any half way knowledgeable fan is going to know there are some quality teams in the Belt and overall there is little difference in the strength of the conferences. I do feel for you however, if you are embarrassed by the Belt competition, NT's home oc schedule has to have you in agony.

Other Sun Belt West Ooc Home Schedules
GrandGreen replied to Buford_Julep's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Got to disagree. There is nothing wrong with having 300 to 400 or more basketball teams. Why would you want to tie football to basketball? This is the thinking that I believe has got the NCAA as non-competitive as it is. To play FB division football a school must sponsor 16 sports with in theory an equitable distribution of scholarships between male and female athletes. While this sounds grand in theory, it burdens schools in particularly those with smaller budgets into funded a lot of sports that do little for the school in terms of recognition or fan support. The Mega sports schools can fund these non-revenue sports to levels that make competition in these sports as uneven as the major sports. To make a school that wishes to play the top level of basketball which requires 4 coaches and 13 ships fund a football at a minimum level of 60 somethings ships and a cadre of coaches and a small army of support staff seems totally unreasonable to me. Also remember that those excess teams provide games for NT also. Limiting the number of division one teams would only result in the same type of scheduling currently seen in football. The mega programs are still going to play mostly oc home games and it would do little to change the overall schedules. It would probably raise the guarantee rates, but only if there was a limit to how many sub-division one opponents a team could schedule. I also cringe that this is a theory mostly expounded by the Big conferences who rue having to share even at a minimal rate the revenues of the NCAA tourney. Who to say were the ultimate cutoff would be and if NT would even be included in the highest level. -
Mean Green Men's Basketball Schedule Released
GrandGreen replied to chrisfisher's topic in Mean Green Basketball
A bit of a reach there. First it would take a whole lot more than a couple of guaranteed basketball games to cover the lost of one guaranteed football game. There are only two no return games on the schedule if Vito is right; Bosie and A&M. A very large basketball guarantee would be a hundred thousand and I am very doubtful that NT is getting anything close to this from Boise. Finances would have little or nothing to do with NT's lackluster home schedule. In fact, several of those games are guaranteed games to the opponents. Basketball is a big losing situation at NT every year with the average ticket revenue probably less than $20,000 a game which might pay the guarantee for a Cameron to play. Regretfully with a home schedule like this year, there is very less chance ticket revenue is going to be up. -
Mean Green Men's Basketball Schedule Released
GrandGreen replied to chrisfisher's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Geez, I believe this is the worst home schedule in the last fifty years. I would say it is unacceptable, but it obviously is not. I echo the statements above, why in the world would NT play an away game in Boise Idaho without a return. Makes no sense at all to play a game that puts the team at a distinct disadvantage because of the travel. With a potentially very good team, and when slowly building support for the team, why would NT not make sure that you would at least have a couple of oc home games that actually might build a little interest. I thought a home and way with Sam Houston last year was ridiculous, but that would be the highlight of this home schedule. NT should be favorite in all their OC games with the big exception of the two Big Twelve clubs. However, NT can't beat UTA and the Boise game looks like a big problem. Home schedule with last year record: Cameron 14-13 Division 2 Jackson State 18-15 U. of Southwest 9-22 NAIA Southeastern La 13-17 Texas Southern 7-25 Away schedule: UTA 16-14 Oklahoma St 23-12 Boise St 19-13 Rice 10-22 A & M 24-10 Houston Baptist 5-25 -
Not that NT has much luck at this, but wouldn't Tomlinson be a good candidate for a medical hardship waiver.

I want Dodge to succeed for the same reason I want Jones, Stephens, Hubbard, Hedlund, etc to prosper; it is for the best interest of University of North Texas. Football is by far the most important sport from a visibility standpoint and therefore it is even more important for Dodge to be successful. On top of that, Dodge seems to have his priorities straight and seems to be doing things the right way. I was never happy with the previous coach even when he was winning because of his atitude and approach. If Dodge can turn this program around and he is off to a great start, it couldn't come at a better time.

1-0, Where's The Doom And Gloom In This One...
GrandGreen replied to FloMoGrad's topic in Mean Green Football
No gloom and doom on this one. They answered every time it was needed. Great game, offense, defense, special teams and coaching staff. With everything else so positive did anyone notice how good our freshman punter was? Also a lot of kicks into the end zone. Would have liked to seen a sack but the defensive line played great for the most part as did the offensive line. I don't think there is a better back in the Belt than Cam. Jamaal (I think) Jackson is as fast as advertised. Royce Hill and Smith look very solid in the defensive backfield. Those consistent critics of Riley are gong have to be silent for a while, hopefully for four years. I am not naive enough to start making New Orleans reservations just yet, but this was a great start to the season. Also kudos to RV for scheduling an opening game against someone other than a top ten team. -
Wow! Oregon Player, Garrett Blount Just Lost It
GrandGreen replied to gangrene's topic in Mean Green Football
It will be interesting what his punishment will be. They are talking about a suspension for one game. IMO, he ought to be gone for the year. -
I have not seen very many articles printed about the Mean Green from any source in the Temple Telegram. I would assume he is a local central Texas writer, by his reference to the Cameron Yeomen. Have you seen this article elsewhere?

www.tdtnews.com/story/2009/9/3/60343 Another pretty good article from a somewhat unusual source.

Brandon Cooper who used to be on the cross country team, takes every chance he gets to degrade the football team. I don't know if it's jealousy because football gets much more coverage or some kind of personal vendetta against football. I find it kind of unusual that an athlete would be so anti other athletes. Plus his lack of logic is apparent. Football is the one sport that comes closest to funding itself. That give up football and concentrate on football is oft suggested and actually used at places such as UTA and Lamar to help soften the blow when they drop football. Is there an example anywhere were a school dropping football has actually bettered basketball? It sounds good in theory, but I think dropping football hurts the other sports not the other way around.

I have never said much about Vizza's transfer, other than it was a strange decision on his part. However, I think most see the different in someone transferring who has basically never played versus a player who was your starter for two years. However, no matter what the player's status, coaches are going to do what is best for their program. NT wasn't too happy with Oklahoma State taking Jason Miller; who was a starter for NT basketball but OSU apparently didn't care about NT's objections. In the case of Cole and Stradfod, I don't think either OU or OSU really cared. My guess is OSU is probably ok with the transfer because they feel Cole will never fully recover from his injury and it frees up a ship.

As Of This Moment, One Week Away From Game Day...
GrandGreen replied to eulessismore's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't think cost had much to do with hiring Dodge. NT could have easily hire the usual assistant coach looking to move up a la Nelson, Dickey, and Simon. Remember Dodge came in about the top of the Belt in salary. NT would not and probably couldn't have hired a $500k plus coach no matter who they were paying off. -
Been a fan too long to limit it to a couple. I certainly enjoyed the stars like most everyone such as Ramsey, Shanklin, Greene, Kennedy, Chapman, Thomas, etc, but I listed some of my favorites that flew more under the radar. Trent Touchstone - Linebacker on super bad 89 team that I think was NT' only all conference player and that was on the second team. Wasn't particularly athletic but never quit on any play. David Yaege - Was an all conference punter in early 70's, but what set him a part was he was also a very good receiver. Jason Mills - One of the most maligned Quarterbacks in NT history, but finished with one of the greatest games in NT history beating conference champion Utah State. Corbin Montgomery - Many named defensive end who was fun to watch because you never knew what he would do next. He proved that there is such a thing as being too intense. Johnny Schindler - Mostly forgotten Safety who was a big hitter in the mid eighties in the mode of more recent Jones and Buckles. Milton Collins - The most heralded recruit in NT history. Collins was arguably the number one recruit in the state that year and gave the school a lot of publicity by just signing with Fry. Generally labeled a bust as he was far from the next Earl Campbell as he was labeled in high school. He was never a factor at running back but he didn't quit and ending up starting as a defensive tackle.

Looks like a very questionable survey with a whole lot of Western Texas bias. There are a lot more head coaches than listed but I find the distribution even in this sample to be very hard to believe. I don't believe this for a second, it looks like a lot of the political surveys that are quoted. I find it unbelievable that San Angelo State with a student body of a shade over 6,000 dominates the head football coaching ranks in Texas.

I would suggest going to the official NT athletic site and doing some research. Most of your questions can be answered there. The coach has been here for a relatively long time and had almost the whole team turn over before last year. I have no idea what happened, but she returned only a few freshmen players. She brought in about eleven new players including high school, jucos, and transfers and last year was basically a disaster. I would think that she is going to have show vast improvement this year to retain her job depending on what her contract status is.
