The problem with this type of analysis; is it is usually based on printed roster sizes, which are often significantly overstated. If you doubt that look at the last year's roster versus this year's NT roster. The same players are now mostly shorter than they were last year. Based on the first two games, my belief is it is mostly a coaching issue at this point. Morris decided to change the offense and defense to his style of play whether the team was built for the new strategy or not. Cal would have beaten NT anyway, but it would have been much more competitive and NT would have trounced FIU as usual IMO if the team had stayed with the run first offense and four man front defense. NT hired Morris because they wanted a change and they got one. Way to early to tell if Moris is the answer or just another bad hire.

Was Morris the Wrong Hire? (Spoiler.. We Don't Know)
GrandGreen replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Football
Not being at least competitive against Cal at home and losing to a team just about no team loses to, is certainly a bad start for any coach. Obviously, the team will have to significantly improve or Morris's job will be in jeopardy despite the cost of making a change after one year. -
***OFFICIAL UNT VS FIU In-Game Discussion***
GrandGreen replied to Coach Andy Mac's topic in Mean Green Football
Do you not realize this is his second game? Being the worst coach in NT is a much bigger challenge than being the best. -
I always like the (everybody was doing it) defense. I actually agree with that for the programs with that kind of money , but no one was doing it so stupidly and in your face as the ponies. As fas as SMU getting the amount of attention it does in sports, it is the Dallas Morning News. With the continued demise of newspapers, this will become less a factor. There is obviously a strong continuing connection with the DMN and SMU that makes no sense. They still cover the P5 more, but UNT much less despite the Mean Green having many more area fans. SMU will remain a major player just because of money. Conferences and teams are willing to take their money with a straight face, while wondering how any team's management can be so desperate.

NT get an emotional win by a lot. NT 42 FIU 17

Damn, we should be AD's somewhere. We can fully evaluate a coach after one game. I think everyone thought this game would be very close, instead it was a complete surrender by NT's defense. Morris and especially the defense looked totally unprepared. However, it is one game and Morris is going to be here this year and probably more to come. NT has an incredibly easy non-conference schedule the rest of the way. Hopefully, a lot of football problems can be rectified and NT can actually win a few conference games. FIU, La Tech, ACU, are all weak teams and a loss to any of them will push the panic button much more than a blowout loss to Cal did.

Well, we could let the season end before we dare state an opinion. As an NT fan, I hope Cal is the national champion, but I will stay with my already stated observation. Cal is a mediocre D1 team and a poor P1 team. Using the actual definition of mediocre which is average, not sub-par as many define it.
-
NT is for some reason, using actual heights unlike most of college football. Did you think the players actually shrunk from last year? I believe they lost because they were an inferior team not because they couldn't measure up with those California redwoods.
-
You think the AD should be coaching the team? NT hired an inexperienced coach that got embarrassed today. That easy non-conference schedule maybe too tough for this team. NT's defense is going to have to substantially improve to win one conference game. It does not matter what defense is played, you have to tackle the ball carrier. I don't recall ever seeing a worst tackling college team than I witnessed today.

Our AD made a MASSIVE mistake with this HC hire

I would guess Cal is a bad P5 team, maybe a mediocre D1 team. -
Women's Soccer UNT vs. Texas Tech in the Battle of the Unbeatens
GrandGreen replied to Big Z's topic in Mean Green Athletics
Totally dominated I guess, I stopped watching at 3-0. I have defended Hedund in the past, when others complained he has never won a postseason game, He used to really recruit the Metroplex well, but that has notably deteriorated. I just wonder if Hedlund has lost some of his fire. Moseley has demonstrated at NT, he expects wins or he will make changes. Obvious, nothing is going to be based on one or two bad games, however I would not be surprised if changes are made after the season if NT is a .500 or less club in conference. -
Cal Head Coach Justin Wilcox interview

Not going to need that hoodie, Saturday. Confirms that NIL needs to be gone or at least modified. Players going to highest bidder, he states biggest factor in recruiting.- 2 replies

2023 GMG UNT get your rump on the record prediction
GrandGreen replied to Jonnyeagle's topic in Mean Green Football
NT builds confidence with easier opening schedule, add two wins at end of regular season. 8-4 -
Like the signing, but what is NT going to do with a team of point guards?
-
I am against honesty. I doubt there are a handful of teams that list actual height. Now instead of everyone listed 1 to 3 inches taller than actual and NT being comparable; you have to adjust for NT being actual vs exaggerated stats. Years ago, I did a comparison of heights listed by pros recruiting with the colleges roster numbers. The average height was overstated by the colleges by 1.5 inches. NT, listed actual height on the roster under Dodge I think, then went back to the old numbers. I guess, the coaches got tired of explaining why NT couldn't recruit size like all the other teams.

Looks like ACC about to add SMUt Cal and Stanford
GrandGreen replied to Jonnyeagle's topic in Conference ReAlignment
Only if you go by SMU bloated attendance numbers. Almost every team overstates their home attendance, but SMU's "butts in seats" numbers are pitiful and their announced attendance is unbelievable. SMU appears to be able to buy everything but fans. I bet the ACC, PAC whatever, can't wait to see those hundreds of Mustang faithful cram their stadiums. I know it is beneath SMU to play the likes of NT, but bringing less than 500 fans fifty miles North should be embarrassing. -

Tyler Perry called best shooter in America
GrandGreen replied to GrandGreen's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Thanks for correcting something that was not wrong. Tylor is the best shooter in America," K-State coach Jerome Tang said of Perry, a graduate transfer from North Texas, who knocked down 12 of 15 shots, including 9 of 11 from 3-point range, in just 18 minutes. "He's going to shoot at a high clip all season long. -
After an exhibition win of KSU in international play by his coach. In 18 minutes, Perry went 9 of 11 on threes and scored 33 points. I guess some are getting a great return on their NIL investment.

Women’s Basketball Reveals Non-Conference Schedule
GrandGreen replied to Jonnyeagle's topic in Mean Green Athletics
Not sure why anyone would call this challenging. UNT Dallas, ULL 16-15 (last year record), So. Illinois 12-19, North Dakota 19-13, Pepperdine 11-19, Samford 13-17, Montana St. 14-16, Texas A&M 9-20 3 SWAC teams: Grambling 10-20, Arkansas Pine Bluff 14-17, Alcorn St. 12-17 Scheduled one very challenging game, SFA 27-7 Not against scheduling for wins for a new coach, but cut the hyperbole; this is about as easy as it gets -
Outsmarted by UTSA? Football maybe king but it is not everything. I am elated that NT did not have to sacrifice other sports like softball, soccer, and golf just to maintain a competitive football program. You are also IMO discounting the huge advantage UTSA has being in San Antonio, the sixth largest city in the USA. No pro football and only one D1 football team (UT) within an hour drive. Littrell was a very questionable hire in hindsight, but the problem was not in his hiring; but the big second contract NT foolishly gave him.

SMuT Boosters willing to buy into ACC
GrandGreen replied to Tommy Gadberry's topic in Mean Green Football
I am a little jealous that they have fans willing to throw millions of dollars away to prop up a SMU program that would go nowhere without overpaying their way in. Why not add about a half billion more and buy into the SEC? Just offer to take no conference funds for 5 years, pay each current member a million a year for ten years, and play 2 out of 3 games against conference foes away. This could however create a big problem, as it may hinder buying their players with NIL funds. Frankly, I wonder how anyone can justify spending this kind of money on sports, when there is so much more important needs that should to be addressed. -
Now let’s sell naming rights to the Coliseum
GrandGreen replied to greenjoe's topic in Mean Green Football
Geez, I'm impressed someone remembers the one time a athletic event was rescheduled. A robotics convention was in the Spit and the girls' game was moved. Of course, it would have probably been moved regardless of the technical ownership. You are correct about the Spit being built with Texas funds, a loophole that existed at the time. We will never know if it can be transferred to the athletic department because there is no reason to do so. Academics gets first choice with the use of the Spit, that is a ridiculous statement. Do you really think scheduling at UT, Texas St. or anywhere else is significantly different? Athletic assets are used all the time for meetings for the public or for academic functions.
