  1. Guys let's not confuse TCU winning this game with us beating LSU. Whole different ballgame. In this game (TCU-OU) it's the non BCS team without all of the question marks. No way we go down to death valley and win without a proven quarterback, d-line, etc. Plus, let's not forget that TCU is lining up and taking it to OU using their WHOLE playbook. We wouldn't do that.
  2. There is one positive in all of this. 12 hour shifts means 44 hours of overtime a week, or about $5808 extra a month.
  3. It seems that Katrina may wreak havoc on me as well. As many of you have probably read Dallas is expected to take in at least 25,000 from New Orleans...that's a conservative estimate because it doesn't take into account those who got out in their cars and came here. If Houston is any indication of the way things could become in downtown then I may be missing some, most or all of the football season and working some serious overtime. In Houston they have reported 200 house burglaries in the area around the Astrodome. Apparently looting in New Orleans didn't give them their fill. (And no, the businesses that are broken into in Texas won't be magically covered by insurance so looting is a "no no" regardless of the circumstances!) Dallas' downtown was already grossly understaffed when it comes to police so expect the tide to turn in a negative direction. Those that are coming to Dallas are the ones who didn't have the resources to get out and have nothing, and as an extension nothing to lose. No, not all of them are criminals...this isn't Miami taking in Cuban prisoners...but you're talking about 25,000 homeless possibly hopeless individuals. There is talk of us going to an alpha/bravo schedule where we will be on duty for 12 hours then off for 12, 7 days a week. That's an 84 hour work week. No vacation days, no comp days. No football games. It's not certain yet but our traffic and swat units are already working like this. And there is no timetable for when this will change. You can't just house these people for a week or two and then send them home. I'm not the only one feeling the pinch either. Lera's mom who is the head secretary at Colleyville Heritage told me their taking in 10 students a day with only the clothes on their backs. My mom, who works for Tarrant County CPS, is on call indefinitely.
  4. Looks like we moved up in the CUSA pecking order.
  5. I had just heard that the blood work he needed due to his heat exhaustion condition might sideline him for an indefinite amount of time. I hope as much as, if not more than, everyone that he's in pads on Sept 10.
  6. You assume Isaac Thomas will be back med...that's not a given. And I don't think there's a way to spin this. TJ was a difference maker on the d-line. I've heard from some that he could have been BK kind of dominant if he were in shape. Here's hoping he and Byerly use this season to get ahead in their classes and to concentrate on what is most important. Your point about college level work being difficult is well taken though. It's easy to say "you're going to school for free so you should be on top of your studies" but it's easy to forget that these young men are at NT because they are football players. No, not football players first and students second but still football players. That means the competitive fire makes them want to be in the weight room, on the practice field running with the first team, as well as in the classroom. Their days are quite full and their motivations different from the average student. Is that an excuse? No. But their plate is a bit more full.
  7. Now that is impressive. We had the two players win the national rushing title in the same season!!!!!
  8. If every player on our defense had this attitude we'd win a few more games. Even against a team that's more talented, if you can take the heart out of them and make em lay down you can beat them.
  9. From someone who deals with the criminal element on a daily basis let me just say I am glad they are able to shoot looters. It has been suggested that "ruined" items are ok to take. I'll save my expletives and just point out that at the point where you let people decide what constitutes justifiable theft vs. stealing you lose the idea of having a civilized society. Things like theft, killing, etc. are hard and fast rules BECAUSE we can't let people pick and choose when to be moral not just for the sake of convenience. And to say it's ok because it's insured? Ok, let me know where you'll be on Saturday so I can come run into your car. It's insured, right? And before anyone says that we're talking about people who just need food and water understand that theft is theft is theft is theft. Need isn't a justification. I know it sounds harsh and may not sound the most humane but, again, we can't go around deciding when other people's property is no longer worth respecting.
  10. Anyone else notice that it looks like he's wearing a shirt with "north texas" embroidered on the left of his chest?
  11. If that storm hits New Orleans the LSU game and New Orleans bowl should be the very least of anyone's concerns. My prayers go out to those who are, as we speak, fighting for room inside the Superdome.
  12. My high school, Denton Ryan, got their tails handed to them by Highland Park (and that was without HP Quarterback Matthew Stafford playing). Ryan has a good team but they pretty much ran the "throw the ball to Justin Fenty deep" offense and HP simply double teamed him and came away with what seemed like 20 picks. I watched until 8:00 to go in the fourth when it was 40-14. This could really be a rebuilding year for Ryan if they don't find more than one weapon. If Fenty gives us a look I'd be surprised because I don't think Denton kids want to stay home and I don't think DD gives them the attention he could.
  13. I know several groups of us are going to make that trip. Perhaps we could all meet up and caravan. It is a long drive but I think it's worth it. I though can't really speak objectively about how boring it will be...I'll have in car DVD and Playstation 2.
  14. And none of this "let's pay attention to basketball" sentiment erases the fact that there is not 1, no not even 1, basketball-centric school in the south. We should support baskeball and give it more attention...congrats on that nobel prize Gak. In the meantime let's not be like the NT faculty and pretend that to support one thing heavily (football in A FOOTBALL HEAVY STATE) is detrimental to the welfare of another thing (basketball).
  15. I just think it speaks volumes that one of our stud running backs fights over the tv remote so that he can watch cartoon network.
  16. Gak, which of the schools you just mentioned is in the South again? And no, I don't mean south as in below the mason dixon line I mean south as in the mentality. You know, the mentality that says "football is king" and "I'd watch mediocre football before stellar basketball." And while it's true that a great basketball program would do wonders just look around the area we're in. Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are all pretty darn good in both football and basketball...but compare the money figures when it comes to income between the two sports. Do you honestly think that they were able to pay their coaches, build better facilities, or scour the nation recruiting with the help of anything other than football revenue. If you do then you are quite naive.
  17. It should be clear that I have a lot of time on my hands to start new threads so here's another one. Anybody else noticed that the Voy board really only has 5 people on it? I mean there are other people who chime in on the "woe is us" threads from time to time but really it's just 5 people. And every thread contains some reference to "gmg.com people are soooo dumb" followed by a post about how the university is doomed because nobody will take the pulse of the voy board to resurrect what could be an ivy league institution.
  18. Only if the color you choose is in this country legally or if the color isn't a possible terrorist or isn't from a sub-suburban income level. If your color isn't any of these things then, no, I don't need to know your favorite color.
  19. Yes, it is. Where else can you see a guy with a high school education who has just finished his 12th beer and is screaming "tiger bait" at the top of his lungs as if he's ever had any real affiliation with the school?
  20. Ok, I'm gonna conduct and experiment. I want everyone to list your favorite color in response to this post. Now, I'm putting the over/under on a thread hijack at 2.
  21. I'm not sure how I feel about the moves to WR. Are we so deep in the secondary that we can afford to move these two? I'm still looking at our numbers and seeing: Quinn B. Jackson Stickler Covington Nwigwe Muzzy And this on a team that doesn't throw more than 10-15 times a game with an inexperienced QB.
  22. Ok, to get back on track. How about George Marshall's hands in big games plus Cougar McBride's off the field behavior plus Byerly's attention to detail in the classroom....
  23. He's too high profile so we won't recruit him. I've heard from several people that we don't like to go hard after big name players for fear of the dissappointment.
  24. I'm reading about all of these guys and how they've already committed to Big XII schools and it makes my head hurt. It seems like to a man their comments should read, "_____ says that the chance to play for _____ and sit the bench behind blue chip recruits from years past is what made his decision easy. 'I'm used to being the man at ___ high school but I really don't need all that pressure. When coach ____ lied to me and told me I'd see the field this year it was really exciting' _______ looks forward to years of having to compete with the guy in front of him and looking over his shoulder for the kid they're bringing in to take his job should he ever win it."
  25. Ok, here's the deal. If you could somehow genetically take the skills, attributes, size, etc. from any three NT players past or present and put them together what would you do? You can build offensive players or defensive players...you can even combine a few offensive guys with a defensive guy. I'll give a few examples. Johnny Quinn's hands and route running plus Jon Ieans' size plus Brock McGrew's speed....Heisman Kevin Galbreath's running style plus Patrick Cobbs' vision plus Jamario's speed...split Heisman vote.
