  1. This game is exactly why we need to thank our lucky stars that SMU chased their Big East dreams and left CUSA. Otherwise, we are still in the SBC, but without MUTS, WKU, or the Florida Airport schools. Imagine how fun that would be--to tell your buddies that we have an exciting team this year that will host Georgia State, South Alabama, Idaho, Arkansas State, and New Mexico State for our 5 games at Apogee...
  2. The people who put that poll together are embarrasing and are weaklings...

This would blow the whole thing apart, in my opinion....
  4. Someone attending a university and not liking football is acceptable. Rooting for another school against your own alma mater that you earned a degree from, that is the unacceptable part. I get the UT-Tyler, UT-Dallas, UT-Arlington grad that feels a kinship to UT and financially support them, since they didn't have football. But to go to a UNT game anywhere and cheer against us, while holding a degree from here, is just wrong in my book...
  5. I was there from 1991-1995, 5 full football seasons working for the athletic department. TFLF is so right about the bolded line above. One thing, though, about those two opponents was that we usually had a decent crowd for both opponents, since it was the opening home game of the season, usually. The worst games were at home in November against the SLC teams from Louisiana. In 1992, we played a night game against Nicholls State on a November Saturday late in the season. Counting the band, we played the second half of that game in front of about 200 people. At that point, looking back, we were playing at Fouts Field, as a 1-aa team, coached by a HS coach (Parker), against a podunk Louisiana SLC school, and we were both terrible--it was the low point, to me, as a student, when I think back to those days. We had one more dismal season, in 1993, going 4-7 again and Parker got fired. We hired Matt Simon to lead our team as the school tried to qualify for 1-A status. The UNT community actually responded and we were able to achieve this move upward, since we played in front of big crowds (for Fouts) that year. When I think back on those days, that when I realize just how far we have come in the last 20 years...
  6. From the comments section: Also, I personally know some UNT grads that will be joining me in rooting for us, which is hil-arious. They DO NOT appreciate music school money being diverted into football…even if it is kind of working (came close to a Championship game last year I think). So there’s that. I did not realize they had any legitimate talent on their team. This changes my confidence level approximately 0%. If we aren’t crushing them at half…I’ll be surprised…and a bit queasy for the rest of the season. I say 49-17-ish? After they score a late TD against our second string. by e1 kabong on Aug 26, 2014 | 3:48 PMreply Sadly, I really believe this poster about the UNT grads that will be with him at the game. The greatest irony, to me, is that these idiots hate that the music dept isn't getting more finanical support because of football at UNT (not sure how you get to that conclusion) that they will go watch a football game featuring UNT and root against us with about 100,000 other people. Talk about selling out...
  7. If we win this game, it will be because we run for over 200 yards and win the turnover battle by a +3 or more...we will need to throw th eball or setup designed QB scrambles, but we have to keep the clock moving to have a chance here. Still think we will win if we knock Ash out of the game, too...
  8. TCUs dance card will fill up real fast, too. You get a non-confernece game in Texas against a team that appears to be in way over the head right now. Utah and Colorado will be popular, too, just like KU and ISU will be, as well.
  9. Except the 5000 fans they have won't convince any P5 league they are worthy of being in a conference with them. They are done. IMO, nobody has had a bigger fall over my lifetime than they have. From being ranked #2 in the old SWC, then get the death penalty, then come back as a whiipping boy for the rest of the SWC, get drop-kicked out of the SWC to the WAC while Baylor gets to stay with the SWC schools people actually followed, watch rival TCU fly by them at warp sepped and now be in a P5 league, end up being in a far-flung league full of teams that no one in the Metroplex care about except for the few that care about UH, and now see the P5 basically close up shop on the rest of the G5. It won't shock me at all if the P5 makes it to where they never play G5 schools again (and I think they will) to see SMU just drop football at a scholarship level instead of admitting that they are bascially a 1-aa school now. Oh well, you'll always have your NFL-lite history of paying players...
  10. Dodge never said anything like that. He was truly classy as a coach could be as the ship sank, unlike his predecessor, who thought Hutch Black Jersey Night and stealing tvs from the AD after he left was fine... Look, Todge sucked as a coach here--no doubt about it. But don't make $hit up just because you're bitter that the BOR and AD felt that he would be a great "value" when he got hired. If it weren't for him bringing up the fact that he was promised a new stadium when he got hired and that he kept pushing that promise so that the university wouldn't back down, Apogee probably isn't here right now. The BOR had to follow through when the SGA got it passed (miraculously, I will add...) And before this turns into a Dickey vs Dodge pillow fight, I've always been clear that neither of those guys were what this place needed as a head coach. McCarney truly fits that description, just like Fry did. Shockingly, they are the only two head coaches we have hired in 40 years that actually had been head coaches at the college level. I just hope that Mac doesn't get bought off by a P5 school to turn around a moribund program as his last rebuilding project. Kansas, Colorado, or Illinois all come to mind...
  11. What were our crowds like back then at Fouts? Were they like the crowds at Fouts when we were winning the SBC, somewhere around 13-15k for a season average?
  12. This was probably the highest rated show on that stupid network...
  13. UT--23 UNT--13 Late turnover gives UT breathing room and they get an underwhelming victory.
  14. I just don't feel it with Charlie Strong at Texas. Usually, when replacing a legendary coach that has won big time at that school for a long time, the next hire tends to disappoint. I don't see him stopping the recruiting advantage A&M has right now from the SEC, nor do I see him elevating Texas back to the top of the Big XII where OU and Baylor currently reside. I like Charlie Strong as a coach, but I just don't feel like Texas is going to be the right fit for his no-nonsense persona. Texas gets top-notch 4-5 star kids that are babied all thru high school, just like they do at OU, LSU, A&M, etc...To me, this hire kind of reminds me of when Kentucky hired Billy Gillespie away from Texas A&M in basketball a few years. Gillespie's hard-driving ways built up a winner amongst the low-rated kids at A&M and the fans loved him. But at UK, those NBA-ready kids wouldn't buy into this new guy's hard ways, which basically led to a revolt amongst the team and fans. BCG was gone after two years. Maybe I'm all wrong here, but when I look back to when programs have let go of their great coaches, it has usually not worked out for the next guy, although Fisher at FSU and Les Miles at LSU both did a great job after both Bowden and Saban left. I just remember coaches like Switzer at OU, Osborne at NU, Spurrier at UF, Holtz at ND, Lloyd Carr at Michigan, Fulmer at Tennessee, and Urban Meyer at Florida after they left and see how far back those programs fell backwards from their heights of the previous coaching giants there. Miami and USC kind of fit this bill, too, but probation played a big part in their destruction, too, after national championship coaches left.
  15. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see a school like SMU go hard after Larry Coker when June Jones is gone.
  16. Rice only jonis the AAC if UH leaves. While possible, I just don't know where UH is gonna go. Texas isn't going to let them in the Big XII. The MWC won't be better right now for UH than the AAC is, so Rice moving in there is just not gonna happen. A duplication of the TV market in the same conference will be rare going forward. Same with SMU ever getting into the Big XII. TCU being there with all the alumni of Texas, OU, Tech, OSU, and Baylor aren't gonna give them a chance to move upward. So SMU stays in the AAC, meaning we stay in CUSA. Same goes for UTSA versus Texas State. Only way USM ever gets an invite up to the AAC is fairly simple--the Big XII or the ACC will have to expand. UConn, Cincy, USF, and maybe UCF would represent possibliites for expansion to those conferences. If one of those teams leave the AAC,, their target(s) to replace any of them will be Northern Illinois, UTSA, one of the F_Us, or a school like USM or Marshall, both of whom are nationally-recognized names, but have absolutely no TV market to sell. I think Rice and Southern Miss will be with us in CUSA going forward, just as I see La Tech, Marshall, and Western Kentucky staying here, also for the long term.
  17. I don't think we need hard facts and data to understand how TCU can get Ohio State at home for an OOC game. They are a P5 team that many bigger P5 schools are gonna want to schedule for a series like this because TCU has a national name and it provides Ohio State two winnable games and Texas exposure. It also keep OSU in compliance with the B1G wanting to have more high profile OOC games. What I also don't think we need is hard facts or data to understand how ridiculous it is that G5 schools like ULL, ULM, South Alabama, Northern Illinois, and UAB can get scheduled home games with P5 schools or big names schools from the MWC while we cannot. That is the crux of UNT90s argument--he is exactly right, too. I like the Army and SMU series, too. I just think they should be the #2 home game ever year for OOC, if at all possible. If you are selling Army as your top OOC game for season ticket holders, that's not that appealing. Does Army have a national following? Of course. Does SMU represent a local game that is cost effective? Yes, they do. I just think that both SMU and Army, though, will never create any buzz or a chance at national recognition for any wins we get over them. I realize a win over Kansas or Kentucky or Indiana don't, either, but those schools have alumni who want to see their school play here in the area. But get a home game here against the three teams that I think are possible and you could get that national recognition--think old Big 12 like Nebraska, Mizzou, or Colorado. Talk to T. Boone about giving OSU a game here in the Metroplex every year with us and TCU, just like all the other schools in the southern part of the Big 12 gets: Texas, OU, Tech, and Baylor. That not even counting the teams that OSU also recruits against that also play in the Metroplex every year, Arky and A&M. Seems doable to me... Or we can just be content with home games against SMU or Army each year going forward in OOC, with the other game being Idaho, Texas Southern, or Nicholls State. Either way, RV is gonna be the AD here for decades to come...
  18. I'm a huge fan of being in the MWC, but the reality is what Cerebus posted. The new system, especially when the P5 pulls away for good, will make the closer games a huge plus for our school. The close games in texas, Louisana, and Mississippi will be huge for us as the G5 will have to focus on regional conferences to lower expenses. The MWC is a very good league, though, in both football and basketball. I'd love to be a part of it, but this new setup basically kills that idea off, IMO.
  19. Gotta hit Ash hard. If he gets knocked out of the game, the QBs behind him are not FBS ready.
  20. My rankings would be: A&M Baylor Texas Tech Houston Texas TCU Rice North Texas UTSA SMU Texas State UTEP
  21. If we win the turnover battle by a +2 or better and run the ball for more than 200 yards in this game, we win. If we do just one of those, I think we lose by 2 TDs. If we don't do either of those things, I think we get blown out by 4TDs or more.
  22. That game you are referencing was against an SBC team, IIRC. I think ULL, maybe. We lost to Army by leading by a FG, calling a TO to decide whether to kick a FG or go for it on 4th and 2, then got the kick blocked and have it returned to setup Army's winning TD in the last minute of the game. It was awesome in its epic failure... But the game-ending fireworks show as we walked out of Fouts that evening was loud and bright.
  23. Actually, Larry Coker would probably be real high on the list to replace June at SMU, I bet...
  24. The Army game was worse--just because people in this area actually care about West Point and we had a good Fouts crowd that day. Playing Ohio, in a monsoon, and then losing, was hard, but Ohio was a good team. Army wasn't. To me, the most embarrased I ever felt as a UNT fan was when Rice beat us 77-20. That game EASILY could have been 100+ to 20, but Rice just called off the dogs in the 4th quarter. To lose to Rice by 57 points in football will lawys be the low point of our return to FBS. You can handle losing 79-10 to Oklahoma because they are an AQ Powerhouse we shouldn't really play, but they provide the cash and we provide the bending over. But you shouldn't ever lose a game like this to a non-AQ team, especially a team with very few winning seasons in the last 50 years. Man, after typing this post, the more I love Coach Mac...
