North Texas Mean Green Hammered by Western Kentucky
untjim1995 replied to Lonny Watson's topic in Mean Green Football
Western Kentucky had something we never had when they moved up to FBS in 2007--they already had a very solid and supported athletic department because of their basketball success. They got big crowds every year for basketball, so they knew that the support of a FBS move up would be achievable and would be successful once they got their feet set. They have a very high ceiling, in my opinion, as high as anyone in CUSA. They don't tolerate losing at all... -

Has anyone finally identified who is on this "committee"? -
For me, this is kind of my last way of giving into something that might affect the needed change in the athletic department. If it doesn't change anything, well, that's ok...because it informed the rest of us to never step foot in a venue that hosts UNT or give one single penny to the operation anymore. For the umpteenth time, this is probably the one time where the university will actually tell you just serious they are about creating a winner in revenue sports. You cannot tell anyone, BMD, small donor, student, or alum, that you want to win by keeping a guy who has overseen a .361 winning percentage in his time in Denton for the three revenue sports. He has hired, IMO, three of the worst coaches in the university's history in Shanice Stephens, Todd Dodge, and Tony Benford--who make the tenures of Mike Petersen and Dan McCarney look solid by comparison. To even drill down further, his last three hires for football, mens basketball, and womens basketball have each gone 22-33 (Mac), 42-53 (Benford, following the best run maybe ever at the school, with the most talented roster we've probably ever had, and the most dumbed-down OOC schedule at home a coach can get in the last two years), and 28-61 (Mike Petersen). Basically, in his entire tenure here, he has one great hire in Johnny Jones--who, by the way, is the first winning coach to get hired away to a Power school directly from UNT since Jerry Moore got hired away to Tech in 1981... To keep him as your AD is to tell the 2% of the UNT Family that care about revenue sports here that you are really an imbecile, that you should have been smart enough to follow what the other 98% have done and ignore or walk away. Either way, we don't care...our enrollment will always be high, most likely increasing in years to come because of our location, so we will get paid no matter what...

Explain to me how an athletic director could keep his job if the university he works for decides to form a committee to choose candidates for the head coaching vacancy that will then get the final selection done by a university president, not the athletic director? -

So you and your buddies are going to keep RV here, help him sort thru the candidates for the opening of head football coach at UNT, and assist him in hiring said coach in the weeks ahead, yet in this "time of huge crisis" you are on gmg,com worrying about rules on posting with the moderators... Gee, how in the world did we ever find ourselves at 0-6 with the worst loss in FBS history when one of the biggest donors we have that bends the ear of the AD at anytime is arguing about rules on posting on an internet forum?? -

Oh, you mean those that the BOR thinks are valid resemblances of future facility greatness under his watchful eyes? I believe you can see an actual Jimmy John's lego'd into the future Rick Villarael Athletic Department...there is a rumor that he will even hire Benford to manage it, since he has great experience as a recruiter. -

My suburban cronies read the above post and realized that you were arguing that you felt that the "people in 'college athletics'" weren't also thinking like the entirety of the fans and analysts out there that we are the absolute laughingstock of college football. And then you got it drop-kicked into you that, yeah, you were dead-ass wrong about that--I doubt you recognized it, though, as you furiously typed out your next response... One day you'll get it...or maybe you won't. I wouldn't exactly peg recognition as your strong suit, but you can argue like a MF'er, so I'll give you that much... -

Come on, man...your just arguing to argue now. Its Ok to admit that we are the laughstock, dumpster-fire of FBS. You cannot lose 66-7 to an FCS school on your homecoming and not get looked at this way. And I guaran-damn-tee you that college athletic department workers all around are laughing at us, too.. -

What if Smatresk doesn't care enough to fire him? Or what if the BOR won't let him because they know he will run the athletic department the way they demand it to be run? Or maybe they want to do this but the buyout for Petersen in the spring and Mac here in the fall, as well as the upcoming buyout of Bumford is too much in their eyes to also can RV. Or the UNT17 has made it clear that if RV goes, so goes a lot of their money, which probably keeps the AD running anyway, above the student fee. At any rate, let this be a lesson to the smaller donors here--we have been effectively told to either follow along or go away by the AD, BOR, and the UNT17. They don't care if you show up anymore or not, nor if you donate or not. The Super Pit has shown that in the previous three years and Apogee started showing it bigtime last Thursday and it will be even worse by the time we host UTSA and then UTEP--this place will look like a ghost town by the Saturday after Turkey Day. They don't care about having butts-in-seats, donations, or winning--they care about being in charge... I truly feel as if 25 years of sports fandom has been flushed down a toilet into a sewer...and it looks as if there will be no going back after this fall. But at some point, you have draw a line somewhere. UNT will always be my alma mater and I will always cherish the memories from all of my time as a student and as a fan. But its not fun anymore--maybe its because I'm older and have three little kids to run after, but its just not enjoyable enough to justify the time and expense anymore. Its one thing for fans to want to win more than your school does; its a whole other thing, though, when the school doesn't even want to win--they just want to offer the teams like a public high school would. But I can't do it anymore if RV is still in charge of the entire athletic department--I have no more faith in him as an AD or as a judge of coaching hires for sports that bring in revenue. -

This thread is full of exactly why we are a laughingstock of college athletics... At this point, there is a real part of me that wants to see how RV staying is really going to affect the program. I mean, seriously, the UNT17 are each going to have sections of Apogee named after them and have multiple rows just to themselves in the upcoming years. It is just so North Texas to figure out a way to fire a coach who just lost by a record-breaking score to a lower division team-- at home-- on homecoming --as the only OOC game scheduled for the year-- five days before we played the best team in our conference--on national tv...it is even more North Texas to go out and do a PR move to KEEP the AD who has presided over this mess, by having the emails to his boss get re-routed to him, have his UNT 17 buddies find out the names of those who want him ousted, and then celebrate that power on a fan website. -
So who's gonna hire the Dickster as their next coach? I mean he won 4 SBC Championships in a row from 2001-2005. Maybe now somebody will hire him away to lead their program, since it obviously never happened here like he thought it would...

He would be a steal at a place like USF or UCF, or any other strong G5 program, as well. It wouldn't surprise me to see Fritz come back to coach a team like UH when Herman gets hired away somewhere higher up the foodchain.

I think its becoming clear that hoping that Smatresk either cannot convince the BOR to get rid of RV or he just doesn't care enough to do it--both of which were my biggest fears with this situation regarding RV. It really is beginning to look as if RV will get to decide when he wants to leave here--#UNTADforlife appears to be a reality. I congratulate you, RV. You have managed to accomplish something that no other AD in America could've accomplished over 15 years. The Rick Villareal Athletic Department will almost certainly become a reality at this point, overlooking the Darrell Dickey Practice Fields. It really is unreal to so many of us that this could've occurred, but it is well on its way to becoming a reality. Many have fought you over the years, but in the end, you look to have prevailed over results-based expectations on a field or court. Amazing...just amazing.
