CBS DFW's Take On RV's Resignation
untjim1995 replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
I tend to agree with you on Smatresk, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt for several reasons: 1.) One, he inherited an accounting fiasco that was unprecedented in its nature, as far as I know. That had to require a ton of energy to address and rectify. 2.) Having to deal with UNT-Frisco and its starting up. 3.) Already had to deal with replacing the head football coach and that was probably more than enough to make heads spin on the BOR and administration because of its size and scope for the largest contract ever given at UNT. I don't care if we get a low energy guy as long as he can pick winners for the revenue sports. That alone would make him way better than anyone who has been in that position here in multiple decades. -
Worst thread I've read on here in a long time...and that is really saying something.

CBS DFW's Take On RV's Resignation
untjim1995 replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
If Hank gets hired as the permanent AD, then the point about RV being the major symptom of Apathy will continue to be proven. But something finally tells me that we aren't going that way at all--that Smatresk will hire someone outside of the university. I agree on the idea that we need to hire a guy who has a proven record for hiring solid coaches in revenue sports. If he can fix that, and we actually start winning, the funds SHOULD come forward by increased MGC memberships, more season ticket holders, and a lot more butts in seats at Apogee and the Super Pit. -
This was the guy who actually went out on the field and ad-libbed the boring-ass playbook to make plays, including a great TD run against SMU in 2006 that clinced our win and kept them from going to a bowl. He was the same guy who barely got to play after this--because he wouldn't follow the playbook of the Dickster.

Fire breaks out inside apartment at Woodvine Apartments

I bet they will find the DNA of Pontius Pilate somewhere near this... -
You seem like a reasonable guy that will get along well with everyone here...

I've said before that we could do a lot worse than talking with Jordan Case about the AD job here. And he might just be at a place in life, financially, that he could make this work. The only thing that worries me is that he has never dealt with the complexities of running a college athletic department, but I think he could do wonders in that position if he had the right people surrounding him.

I think that is the reality of what these Lower G5 schools are trying to continue as long as possible. The Power League Cartel can make up for a lot of shortages with one bodybag game, but the probability of those games going away in the next decade are very real. I think that is when the schools in the Lower G5 will finally align geographically to reduce costs and encourage more fans traveling to closer games.

You know, I think you have posted a point that is very accurate. As a Christian myself, I think that the term "Christian Values" has been so usurped by people and groups who want to hit on something that means something to the large population of the country that follow Christianity. Unfortunately, so many of these people and groups are only using the term as a way to get power or money. Its basically the polar opposite of what Christianity is supposed to be about. Baylor is showing this better than any other group that I can remember. They advertise to kids and parents that they are a Baptist institution that will always be Christ-centered--until we get really good in revenue sports and decide that being good brings in so much money that we need to look the other way at criminal acts. It is sickening and it brings up the reality that Christians often do more damage to Christianity than anyone else could ever do--which again, is the 100% complete opposite of what Christianity is supposed to be about. No amount of football or basketball wins will ever change that...

Who's sock account is this?

More Cowbell!!

Texas isn't letting UH in unless the other schools demand it, like they did with TCU. But that is highly doubtful. They want TV markets that will help their product. BYU and Cincinnati help you more than UH does. Even Memphis, Colorado State, and either Florida school in the AAC provide more help to the current Big XII than Houston. I still think UH's best and only chance at earning a Power spot is for the Big XII to fold before the LHN expires, which causes UT to go independent and keep the money instead of joining another league, and the Pac decides to offer UH a spot along with others to get into Texas' TV markets. Its remote, but it is possible. Otherwise, they will probably just grow into an AAC power, watching their successful coaches get hired away to the Power 4.

This. The AD will get fired long before Briles even gets a warning letter. Baylor ain't letting go of the golden goose as long as he keeps bringing in the green and gold...

If Hank gets hired, are you going to start calling him the Kansas Con or the Jayhawk Jaywalker?
-
Hank may not even want the job. He probably likes the gig he has and any new AD that comes in will keep him around, since he has been a staple of Mean Green broadcasts since 1995. Hank is a great asset to this place--there are very, very few of them on the payroll. We surely don't need to get rid of him--but we don't need to promote him to the AD position either just because he's been here for a long time.

Ironically, it will be FAR worse sexual acts committed on his watch than anything that happened with Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky that ultimately have brought Ken Starr down from his perch. And it cost millions less for the taxpayers, too!! (This doesn't condone the activities of getting a cigar used as a....oh, never mind.)

I saw one quote on another board from an anonymous Baylor insider who openly said that we can't turn our recent $300 million dollar investment (McLane Stadium) into a mausoleum by firing Briles and taking the chance that they lose all that money... That's a fine Christian institution that the Baptists are allowing to really show off some wonderful traits... Hey, Baylor...Joel Osteen thinks this is greedy and misguided //(sarcasm)

First person I hire is someone I know personally that can handle corporate sponsorship and specializes in cultivating donors. That person doesn't exist in this department now. Second thing I do is ask Seth what he needs that he hasn't had yet that can get done this summer. Show him that you know that football here will drive the bus and he's gonna help him in every way possible. And then I go to Jalie and do the same thing, since she's new and has shown promise. I would wait on doing anything though for men's basketball and just let that season play out--then bring in your guy for the next hire.

That look on FFR's face, while listening to RV's explanation, is priceless...as if he knows that the lazy answer is the only one he will ever get.
-
Also on their schedule: Homecoming Opponent, Forestburg HS, a powerhouse 6-Man program...
-
I would target assistant ADs at urban schools with other entertainment options available that are G5 to go after. UNLV, UH, UCF, USF, SDSU, Memphis, or Cincy would be great places to start.

For this upcoming season, when we are playing Butt Cookman and MUTS, I think handing out 5000 tickets to area schools or to the Denton Chamber of Commerce would make a lot of sense, instead of watching us play those guys in front of capacities that are half or less. But I do agree on asking for value for our product--I just think that we have to make extraordinary steps going forward in this season to start rebuilding a reputation with our fanbase and the town.
-
I think the smartest thing a new AD should do here is to figure out a way to fill the Super Pit and Apogee, even if a lot of tickets are free or given out with a purchase of something. There is no reason that Apogee or the Super Pitt shouldn't be at least 2/3rds full, at a bare minimum, every night. A free seat ticket that is used still buys parking, concessions, and apparel. A free ticket user can still yell and help the team have some kind of a home advantage. Until their is decent demand, give out a free reason to try out our venues and our teams and see if you get a taker or two. Right now, an empty seat is more demoralizing and costly than one with a butt in the seat--even if they got those seats for free.

What 2A High School is he going to run into the ground--because his college days are over...I can already see a bunch of Six-Man games on their schedules, along with a 6A road game or two every year.
