Mid Spring UNT QB Poll: Who will start @UT?
Charlie NT 73 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Rah Rah the Police Dog looks pretty darn good to me right now. I will pick Rah Rah! Greer lead Navarro JC to the SWJC title, then beat Trinity Valley JC 56-45 in the SWJC Championship game. Next, Greer lead Navarro to a win over Hind MS JC in the Brazos Valley Bowl. Josh has experience winning regular season games and conference championship game experience. Big guy at 6-5, 220. Strong arm, accurate, hard to bring down, can view the filed quickly, very nice touch on the ball. Certainly learning more of the North Texas offense, and taking team leadership command right now. OC Mike Canales and WR Mike Grant recruited Josh when he was in high school. Canales and Grant went after Greer at Navarro. Top QB recruit target for the 2014 class. Back when Josh committed to UNT, read these postings: www.gomeangreen.com/forums/topic/92467-josh-greer-talks-about-decision-to-commit-to-unt Plenty of North Texas fans posting that are very happy Josh signed with North Texas. HUDL highlights: www.hudl.com/athlete/0/2402169/highlights/69369397 Very impressive! Regardless of the status of DW, I believe Greer would win the QB battle at the end of spring ball. If DW is out for spring practice due to injury, DW will get another chance at QB during two-a-days in August. DW has talent and I am sure the coaches would like to see more work from DW.- 42 replies

Travis, Todd Dodge sure missed the call on Jamize Olawale didn't he. Seems like Dodge missed on many key points of college football coaching. I liked Dodge, but he was in over his head here at North Texas. How many years of college football coaching and recruiting experience does Coach Mac have? How about OC Mike Canales college coaching experience? How about DC John Skladany? Coach Mac has sent many players to the NFL, so I would summarize Coach Mac knows college football talent. Canales and Skladany both have recruited and coached many NFL players . I trust their judgement too. These professional college football coaches have plenty of authority and experience to rely on, especially judging college football talent. The staff sure found a gem with CB Kenny Buyers, so why not with Josh Greer? The best player wins out, regardless if the player is a veteran, freshman, walk on, or JUCO player. I am no arm chair quarterback, so I rely on the coaches to make the best choices for the North Texas football program. If the coaches choose Josh Greer as the starting QB, then accept their choice. Greer will be a good QB for North Texas.

Why the " God help us " reference? Sounds like a silly response. The coaching staff is a better judge of talent, so I trust their judgement on who is leading for the starting QB position. If Greer is the guy, then the job belongs to Greer. I think Greer is a good QB, and can lead this team. DW seems more liable for injury than Greer since DW is so thin as described by other posters. I have read many postings referencing this subject. Not performing during work outs, etc. I read that DW sprained his ankle yesterday. So where does DW fit in the scheme of things now? Is the injury severe enough to keep DW out of spring practice? McNulty is a good QB but is he good enough to push out Greer as the starting QB? McNultly will get more reps now if DW is out due to injury.

Denton SWAT officers school Olympic bobsledder Johnny Quinn
Charlie NT 73 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Last night at the end of the Channel 8 Nightly News show, the Channel 8 news had a quick story and video about Johnny Quinn working with the Denton SWAT team. The video featured Johnny breaking in 2 doors, and shooting targets with a pistol. I noticed Johnny was shooting left handed, and was hitting the target. Nice story, but there was no interview with Johnny during the video. -

I remember when "Parks and Rec Rick" help set up two different North Texas coaches caravans in Grand Prairie. One caravan was at the Ruth Jackson Center with Darrell Dickey, Johnny Quinn, Jarmario, Woody Wilson, and other players. Big turn out for this event. The second caravan coaches stop was held at the Uptown Theater in downtown Grand Prairie. Cool place! I met Coach Mac for the first time at this event. Very big turn out for North Texas fans! I do not like the idea of no Fort Worth coaches caravan, following the HOD bowl win and the 9-4 season. Strike while the fire is hot! I wonder if the AD can schedule another stop in Fort Worth , Arlington or Grand Prairie?

Some other great plays I remember- Jeremy Pearls pass interception return for a TD in the NOB Cincinnati bowl game Patrick Cobbs big 30 yd TD run in the NOB Cincinnati game. The NMST game at Fouts, Booger destroys the huge NMST OG Steve Luna all game long. Booger sacked the QB and took the ball away from the QB in the same fashion as QB sack and taking the ball away from QB as in the MTSU game. How about the big run Jamario Thomas had, where he lost his shoe! There are too many great NT players and great plays to name. I think I would name a defensive series as the greatest "team" play-- the 8 play goal line stand against Rice. Freaking unbelievable accomplishment. National TV, good crowd at Apogee! Halloween night! What a night for the Mean Green! Outstanding!

Not a bad start for North Texas off the DCTF top 150 listings. I count 4 players that have UNT listed: # 97, DT Taaj Bakari, Mansfield Legacy HS, 6-2, 290 # 135, OT Josha Jones, FB Bush HS, 6-7, 255 # 137, OT Larry Huges, Carrollton Creekview HS, 6-7, 270 # 148, WR Ravon Rollinson, Dallas Skyline HS, 5-8, 160 There are probably more players that are listed in "others" that have UNT offers. Interesting: # 92 DT Tevin Boone, Cleburne HS, 6-2, 290, No Offers # 94, DT Devin Brown, Katy HS, 6-4, 315, No Offers

North Texas and the Dallas St Patrick's' Day Parade
Charlie NT 73 replied to Charlie NT 73's topic in Mean Green Football
Thanks and Thanks for trying! -
I read several postings regarding a group of North Texas fan's were putting together a parade float representing North Texas. Are there any up dates on the parade participation and the North Texas float? Any chance that Coach Mac and Johnny Quinn could be on board? The parade will be this Saturday 03/15, starting at 11:00 am. Thanks

MGB: Thursday spring practice running blog
Charlie NT 73 replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Replacing 6-4, 320 Richard Abbe on the DL may not be so tough if you look at the returning part time players/starters for what they bring to the DL. I see size and quickness. I think Coach Kevin Patrick will put together a quick, fast DL. I also see other college DL's going to smaller quicker players since the zone read play has developed and is used by all offenses. DL's must have speed to counter the zone read plays. I remember how Booger Kennedy could get past the big OL players, with his quickness and speed. I do not think these DL players are "small" at all. I see quick feet and speed. Austin Orr , 6-4, 280 Dutton Watson , 6-3, 280 Alex Lincoln, 6-2, 270 I am very interested in how Sid Moore, 6-1,252, and Dan Kottman, 6-1, 245 will be in the DL mix this season. I am impressed with Sid Moore for his quickness. Moore looks to be very strong. and can become bigger and stronger. Kottman has D1 experience playing at San Diego State. Kottman is another smaller quick DL guy. I left out Sir Calvin "Zero" Wallace, because I will just have to wait to see how Wallace develops for the DL. I do not think Wallace is the quick, fast DL guy, but could clog up the middle of the line. Just my 2 cents off reading DL player comments. On another note. When the Phil Steel mag comes out for 2014, I will review other teams DL players. I was surprised to find many D1 teams have starting DL guys listed at 5-10, 5-11, 6-0, 6-1 in the 250-270 lbs range in the 2013 Phil Steel football mag. -

Available Scholarships for the 2015 class ?
Charlie NT 73 replied to Charlie NT 73's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Thank you for the scholarship review! -
I see there are 4 transfers on the 2014 roster: DT Dan Kottman; DE Jordan Richmond; LB Blake Bean; and OL Sam Rice. I assume these 4 players will receive a scholarship that will come out of the the 2015 class. If these 4 players do receive scholarships, then will Coach Mac only have 21 available scholarships for the 2015 class? What about current walk on's that earn scholarships from the 2015 class ? The 2015 class could end up with fewer available scholarships to offer than the 2014 class. How many scholarships will be available for the 2015 class?

The best athlete on a high school team usually plays QB. McCrary runs the Leander offense and is the "One man Show" for Leander. I see McCrary at RB for North Texas. Great vision, speed ,toughness, and the ability to make plays out of nothing. McCrary is a play maker for sure! I hope McCrary will join the Mean Green family!

Who will be the UNT starting QB against UT? (POLL)
Charlie NT 73 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Mini Mac today. Certainly knows the offense, and a QB with the skills to run the show. Greer a strong second, real close! A 6-5 QB who can see the field, and has a cannon arm. Just like last year, the starting QB was not determined until the last two weeks of two - a - days. -
Just like "forevereagle states", "Does this even matter?" I have been following North Texas athletics for a long time. Seems to me all the sports talking media heads like to piss us off, by calling us North Texas State, compairing low ranking recruiting classes, North Texas stories on the last page of the sports section or in the high school reporting sections. You know what I am talking about. Do not let this kind of media get under your skin. Expect it for awhile. I want North Texas to earn our respect. Beat the crap out of the whornes at their house! The start of the real turn around! Why not North Texas!

From the C-USAbbs Forums board. Mercury News article-- Stanford's Recruiting Class Holds to Blueprint. csnbbs.com/thread-668182.html Stanford's HFC David Shaw: "We never go off star rankings, or who else offered a kid a scholarship, or Gatorade awards--- all that means nothing!" "It's about finding the right guys, the guys we can get in school, and play the way we play." Stanford's assistant FB coach, Lance Anderson: "We see guys all the time who are big and strong, but do not like contact. When things are difficult, they back down" Toughness indicators- read the article. The Stanford coaches describe what they look for in LB's, OL guys, CB's QB's, and DL guys. the staff reviews qualities in a player the staff looks for in a prospective player. The article provides a good perspective about recruiting football players. I can see the same blueprint with the way Coach Mac and his staff recruit football players. I do not worry about how Coach Mac and his staff handles recruiting. The staff are better judges of talented football players that can play in the North Texas offensive and defensive systems. The current 2014 class of commitments are outstanding players that fit right into Coach Mac's style of football!

Just for fun, I checked into UNLV's football roster. UNLV has many huge OL and DL players. Double click the "POS" to aline the roster players by position. www.unlvrebels.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/unlv-m-footbl-mtt.html

East Carolina has 6 DE commits for their 2014 class, with 5 of the 6 at 6-4 to 6-6, 220 to 250 + lbs. I think the HFC at ECU could turn a couple of these DE's into DT's. Why does the east coast produce so many big DT's every year, while Texas does not? I have always said, if you cannot recruit a DT, then make a DT! Maybe the North Texas staff should go after DE's or OL guys they could convert into DT's. There are big HS kids all over Texas that could work under our S/C coach, to become DT's. I have heard that Patterson at TCU will recruit tall basketball players to become DE's.
