Advance Alert Thsca All Star Fb Game Will Be Next
island eagle replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Speaking of all-star games, North Texas DL signee, Jesse DeSoto recovered a fumble as his East team beat the West team in the San Antonio All-Star game on May 19th. -
Milton Colllins, from Blooming Grove, was not only first team DCTF, but was the highest ranked running back in the state. He was expected to sign with Texas A&M, but signed instead with North Texas. The news was so shocking that it made the lead story on that night's sports news on the Houston stations. He never really made it at running back though and ended up playing linebacker, if memory serves correct. Joe Greene did not make the super team. He played on an all-black team, back when many of Texas high schools were still segregated.

Any Mean Green Weather Fanatics Out There?
island eagle replied to island eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Thanks for the awesome photo and comments from my fellow MG'ers. Bet you were torn between wanting to get a good close up and hoping it wouldn't get too close! -
The Galveston County Daily News has hired me to produce an on-going weather blog. I know that a few of my fellow fans have a fascination with the topic, so I am including a link. The first blog talks all about waterspouts, if any of you would like to learn more about that topic. At any case, future topics will be found at the link provided. http://blogs.galvnews.com/blog.lasso?blog=2eb76cce923ed1ce

I think there is an excellent chance we see him in some situations where a pass to the back is likely. If I recall, it was said that he had pretty good hands when he was signed.

Expectations For 2007 Mean Green Season
island eagle replied to NCMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
Same here, because if we see that then we know that improvement will happen whether it will take 1 year or 3 years. -
finally some sense on the subject. SMU should have a pretty decent team this year and Justin will only be better with a year's experience. Anybody who thinks that the SMU game will be anything but tough for us is wearing a pretty serious shade of green glasses and mine are pretty green. Can we beat them? Sure. Can they beat us? Sure. It will be a tough game.
-
Absolutely. Why would he want to go to SMU and play in front of empty stands with a few apathetic and self-absobed prima donnas?

I grew up in Austin and went to many games in Memorial Stadium. My father was UT all the way and so when I first came to North Texas (wanted to go out of town to school), I was pretty much an Orange blood all the time. Over the years, my loyalties have shifted more and more to the Mean Green and now I hardly know who UT is playing anymore. I'll watch them on TV and cheer for them, but my loyalty is strictly with North Texas. I was at every UT-North Texas game played and never, for a second, considered cheering for the Longhorns. Personally, I think it is a lot more fun cheering for a team that has obstacles to overcome in order to get deserved recognition rather than for one that has all the advantages in the world.

Riley's And Mom's Comments About Switch To Unt
island eagle replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
The competition will make both better. Viazza was Class 4A player of the year and led Alamo Heights to the championship. Riley was 5A offensive player of the year and led SLC to the top. Since when have we had two QB's like this in the house at the same time? It will also make Meager better, because all these QB's will be learning from each other as they compete. It's not just good athletes that fuel the good programs, it's the fact that the good athletes still have to compete with other good ones and nobody can rest on their laurels. -
Or sign a player late who is so highly rated that they can't drop him much. Case in point=Buckles. He was an Austin American-Statesman Top 55 (in the state) which is highly reflective of how UT rates the recruits. When we signed him, it was difficult for the recruiting services to suddenly "discover" he shouldn't have been rated so highly. In the old days, once the high school senior season was finished, a players rating stayed the same no matter who they signed with. Now, it jumps up and down like crazy. Heck, if UH were to sign the equivalent of Warren McVea today, he'd drop at least one star.

Remember it is a commitment, not a signing. Lots of things could happen between now and February that would cause a change.

How Much Of An Advantage Will Have Vs. Smu ?
island eagle replied to NT03's topic in Mean Green Football
it will work both ways. The short week may help us. On the other hand, the Ponies will have had two weeks (at least) practicing to face a spread offense and one actual game (TT) against it. That should help them when they face us. Ideally, they would have faced a team like TT, but one that ran a DD type offense. -
Who Will Score Our First Touchdown?
island eagle replied to Charlie NT 73's topic in Mean Green Football
Probably would work if the opposition were actually expecting some other play instead of that one. -
Actually, I think that he will be planning a draw play and hoping to eat the clock with a running game.....NOT.

More than I can count (or remember for that matter). I'd have to put the number at over 100. -
Smu Looking At The Nt Game For Payback...
island eagle replied to medpilot21's topic in Mean Green Football
If all SMU folks were like him, I'd change my opinions about the school. -
Dd Was A Very Crummy Recruiter And Yet Won 4 Championships.
island eagle replied to agw0038's topic in Mean Green Football
You probably hit the nail on the head. DD could spot hidden talent fairly well and did have one very good recruiting year, which paid off big time. But, when opposition coaches can use your own quotes to convince a prospect not to go to your school then you are doomed. The wonder is that DD did not see what the effect of his "down on me approach" had on his program. Also, DD let some of his assistants underperform tremendously and they helped to bring him down. Still, I appreciate what he did when he had a little more of his swagger and hope that maybe he can learn from experience. -
Texas Top 100 & Rivals 3-star List U N T
island eagle replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Of course, that is based on their star system which slides up or down depending on which school they commit to. On the other hand, we have 3 commits who are ranked in the top 20 at their positions according to Texas Football. I find DCTF's rankings much more reliable. If those guys commit to Rice or SMU, they will drop a star. Also, they are just in the considering categories, not the commit category. If all those players actually commit to Rice or SMU, I'll be impressed. Otherwise, it means nothing. -
He's #35. At least he was last year.

U Gotta Luv Those Trash Talking Hillbillies Muts
island eagle replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Wait until the Todd Dodge/Mean Green avalanche hits them. It may not be this year, but TD and the team get loaded with talent, MUTS will be history (yet again). -
Four future Mean Green players are set to appear in the Oil Bowl on Saturday, June 23rd (Marquese Davis, JJ Johnson, Thomas Moreland and Kyle Russo). I hope that somebody in the area will be able to attend and give us a report on how these future Eagles look.
-
Unfortunately, a kid will be rated as a 3 or 4 star as long as UT (for example) is looking seriously at them, but soon as they sign or commit to North Texas, Tulsa or Rice (for example) they will drop a star. It's the biggest flaw in their system.

Middle Tennessee Should Make A Conference Switch
island eagle replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
They might try learning how to win at the Sun Belt level before they get such ideas, unless they are just dying to be the laughing stock, bottom feeders of another conference.
