Interesting Stat From Saturday Night
island eagle replied to GreenTiger_OriginalAcct's topic in Mean Green Football
Well, as Darrell Dickey always said: "the running game opens up the passing game". Sorry, couldn't resist that one. We do need to lighten up the board a little and keep our sense of humor, even if some staff members can't. -
Actually, if you go and actually do some RESEARCH and check a few facts, you'll find that: 1. He didn't claim to invent the internet, but to be involved in its set-up. 2. You'll find that the second claim is absolutely correct. He was involved in the governmental panel that cooperated with the universities who set up the first internet. At least he didn't invent avoiding Vietnam using family connections like GB or avoiding it with 3 deferments and "too busy" like Cheney. The height of hypocrisy are the later-day "chicken hawks". So, easy to send men to battle when you were never there yourself.

Obviously she has not been reading enough palms!

One of the criticisms of the former coach was that he didn't adjust to fit his players. Lets hope we are not going that route again.
-
I'm with you 100% on this,yy28. I am definitely not a newbie, whiner or whatever and have been a long-long time supporter of this program (pre-Fry) with both tickets and contributions. I have been through more ups and downs with the program than Zorkak can even imagine. I'm all for Dodge and want him to make it in the worst way. BUT, when there is a glaring problem that even an idiot can see then I am going to speak out. I have earned that right. All we need is another one dimensional coach who is too stubborn to adjust in order to thrive. I won't say that TD fits that criteria at all, but I won't say for sure that I know he is not. All I am saying is that I certainly hope to see him react to obvious problems with something other than more of the same. I had enough of that with the last coaching regime and it inevitably led to disaster.
-
Thanks for saying that, Phil. Some people don't want to recognize the obvious.

Better Field Position Tops Unt To-do List
island eagle replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Rick, You are on the money with that observation. The DEFENSE (or lack of it) is the elephant in the living room. I hope that somebody on the staff recognizes the problem or it is going to be a long, long season. We've gone from one-dimensional conservative to one-dimensional offense. Ranking near last nationally in defense shouldn't be acceptable. -
Anyone With Stones Going To Sweetwater?
island eagle replied to stebo's topic in Mean Green Football
Stebo. To heck with the QB "controversy". The BIG QUESTION is when are we going to get a 1A defensive coordinator? Vince Young could be QB and we'd be losing with our current defense. -
Winless Ull Opens As 9 Point Vegas Favorite
island eagle replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Tackling is not even half of our problem on defense. Sure hope that TD wakes up and smells the coffee soon. I don't want us to go from just about the worst offense in the country to just about the worst defense. Either is unacceptable as far as I am concerned. -
Absolutely, the defense returned 8 starters. It was better (though not good) last year by far. Most of the players had experience in the 4-3 (from 2005) and it was not that radical of a shift. What Mendoza doesn't seem to realize is that to compete in college as opposed to high school, !. You have to DISGUISE schemes; 2. Make rapid and continual adjustments; 3 BLITZ some ( I know TD doesn't like it) but, I don't know of a successful 1A defense that doesn't blitz at least some; and 4. Adjust the overall defensive plan to the talent available. The offense can only do so much. If we had Vince Young at QB, we'd still be losing because we getting very close to bottom on the nation in terms of yards given up and it doesn't seem to be much better even when the other team puts in their 2nd and 3rd team players. I HOPE THAT SOMEONE ON THE COACHING STAFF WILL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR FIXING THIS SOON OR IT IS GOING TO BE A VERY LONG SEASON AND PROSPECTS WON'T BE MUCH BRIGHTER NEXT YEAR WITHOUT SOME NEW THINKING ON DEFENSE.
-
It is getting really hard to argue with your assessment. I HOPE that Todd Dodge does begin to address this problem seriously.
-
Closest thing would be the 7-26 record for the last three years of Rod Rust.
-
I agree 100%. Nobody expects the impossible, but at this level, fans are going to ask questions about problems they see. I would worry more if we were 0-3, lost two very winnable games, and didn't ask any questions. I would assume that Coach Dodge knew that this is how it is at the college level and is not surprised that some people are asking these questions. In fact, I hope he is asking the very same questions.

The only stat that matters is the score board.

Mean Green Couldn't Adjust To Blitzes
island eagle replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Not to be sarcastic, but I thought that "every time you blitz, the other school's fight song is getting ready to play". That sure didn't happen for us against FAU. Not only that, but the only true blitz by us that I saw Saturday night, we sacked the QB. Then we never went back to it, for some reason. I support TD and have hope for the future, but I am not sure that we don't need a lot of work and adjustments in our defensive strategy. -
Unfortunately, completion percentage (or any other such measure) aren't the best indicators of the "effectiveness" of a QB. Joe Montana never led the stats, but he led the intangibles and on the score board. He knew how to win, how to manage the team, and how to avoid fatal mistakes. That is what I look for in a QB above all. DM and every other QB on the team will ultimately be measured by those standards.
-
Thanks, Rick and our prayers go out to you Greenbat and your family.
-
I'll assume he is talking about the younger players, since 10 starters on the team have New Orleans Bowl and Sun Belt championship rings. They know what it takes to get there.
-
Actually, Evan played very little at CB on Saturday.
-
Meager doesn't have a strong enough arm to throw deep consistently, much less put the ball in the right place if the receiver is well-covered or double-covered. The deep throws were a mistake. Danny has to learn how to read these plays or he will be picked off every time he tries them.

A Big Difference In Team Discipline
island eagle replied to Green to the Bone's topic in Mean Green Football
The biggest thing that I see Dodge as doing is bringing back pride to the Mean Green. Hopefully, that is just the start of what he will accomplish. -
He was wanting an illustration of incompetence.

"UNT lacks consistency in any facet of the game other than its passing offense" ????? Wait just a minute. I would say it lacks consistency in ALL areas right now. The only thing consistent about the passing game is that it falters on key drives and is shut down as soon as the other team makes its second half adjustments. Every facet of our game needs improvement in my opinion.
