I guess I don't understand the whole commuter school thing then...If Tech is a commuter school it only means there aren't enough dorm rooms. No way students drive more than across town. If all this is true the commuter label doesn't really mean anything. Would seem the larger schools would all be commuter and the small schools are residential because fewer student need to live on campus to make the % right. -
Whoever made the flag either sent it to CLC/UNT for approval and they approved it even though they don't have a trademark on it or they simply added the CLC Hologram to make it look more official and charge more money. (Don't get me wrong not everyone is perfectly honest with the price thing) I have never seen anything from CLC or UNT that indicated that the flag is trademarked.
-
I think the flag must be. I found the same flag in Lubbock with a CLC logo on it. I asked the guy and he said "yea that's the North Texas flag" It does not appear on their art slick anywhere. If it doesn't say North Texas, Mean Green etc I think it's fair game. THAT IS ONLY MY OPINION BASED ON HOW I UNDERSTAND THE LAW AND I AM NOT A LAWYER. There are several factors to the price of logoed spirit wear. I am giving away trade secrets but I'm a Doctor for money so I don't really care. There is almost always several middle men in the process. ie Hanes makes a shirt and sells it to a distributor... the distributor sells it to a wholeseller (usually the person that puts the logo on it or pays someone to do it) they pay the CLC royalties (which is less than sales tax). The wholeseller sells to the spirit shop, bookstore, Wal Mart etc then they sell it to you. The standard makup up for apperal is somewhere between 30-50%. SO..after going through several hands the cost goes way up. Honestly, CLC has the least to do with the final cost. I have looked into the wholesale market but it is very difficult to keep the prices low enough for the retailer to make a profit and keep the price down for the consumer. On a side note if you are producing something to use yourself all of the CLC/UNT stuff doen't count, only if you sell it.

If the schools involved are represented by the CLC then it has to be done this way. The shirts will have to be respectful to the opposing schools. I don't know if the "Sink Navy" shirt will be licensed or not but I know the Army approved the "Sink Army" stuff on the Navy website. I think there is a lot of confusion about how things a suppose to be done. If the shirt is sold to the public, no matter who is selling, UNT or otherwise it must go through CLC and UNT. UNT receives royalties from the sale and of cource CLC gets a cut. Several things happen when shirts are done on the "black market": UNT has no control over who is doing what with it's name, UNT doesn't get any money from the sales, retailers (like myself) lose sales because people a buying and wearing unlicensed stuff, which cuts into the profit margin which in turn decreases the amount of product I can offer for sale and then theres not as much correct MEAN GREEN color available. Seems trivial but does truely work that way. I tried to explain the same thing to the Athletic Dept when they contracted with a company that doesn't offer the correct color that they themselves said they wanted. The next part of the puzzle for me is that I have been trying to build something with this for the past 3 years and have spent an enormous amount of time and money so I can't risk losing the CLC license over this. It is a complicated situation but to have a top quality program you have to follow all of the rules. Yes, I am a huge nerd and chicken, always have been always will be.

I would be willing to offer game day shirts for each home football game and SMU. What about a contest to design the shirt for each game. The contest winner would get 6 free shirts, size of your choosing. The shirts must be approved by the CLC and both universities involved (CLC/University requirement for licensing). The shirts can be for sale at each football game and whenever I can get them out there. I can get them out for about $10 each. I reserve the right to scrap the project if I get a boat load of WKRP from anyone involved.

From what I can find their color is listed as Kelly Green. Sometime in the past they went to a darker shade of green I believe called Gridiron Green. There has been some uprising since the movie came out to go back to the lighter shade of Kelly. I'm not absolutely sure about the name Gridiron Green however. Check out this petition page I found...sounds kinda familiar. www.petitionspot.com/petitions/kellygreen I couldn't make the link work, maybe someone else can. -

The are suppliers to the spiritwear world that now produce UT Orange. UT is the #1 selling school for CLC merchandise. Companies want to cash in on that market. Red and Black, Navy Blue, Royal Blue, Maroon, Hunter Green are all very easy to find in a lot of different types of clothing. Red and Black and Navy probably the easiest. There is a huge variation in green and for that fact what people call Kelly. I think more mid green colors are showing up this year...which is good I simply order a piece and see what it looks like. -

The branding change was a big waste of time IMHO. If you look at the differences in the two sets of branding there is really very little difference. Yes the logos look different but there are still 2 different eagles, two different fonts etc. The color change was soooo slight that I will bet anyone that if both logos were sewn with both colors of thread you will not be able to tell the difference. The change in clothing colors comes from a University directive (if you will). There is really no legal restriction on clothing color however, it must be approved by the University. I will continue to sell more Kelly but will keep a line of Hunter, Black, Gray and Pink. UNT has been very good about approving all of those colors. The only very sticky part is the color of the logos. Part of the branding change time line had nothing to do with the University. They wanted to unveil it at a particular time, then it went to the CLC (Collegiate Lisencing Company, contracted to enforce the Universitiy's trademark) It took the CLC several months to get the information out. I had the new logo sewn and on the web before the CLC had it published. HOWEVER most of the companies that manufacture the spirit wear for UNT (that sell to The Bookstore and Voertman's) did not have the information from the CLC for a couple of months. Remember that the larger collegiate spirit wear companies also sell to retailers of a lot more universities and unless there is a huge demand the will slap a UNT Eagle on whatever they have they call Kelly, submit it to UNT as Kelly then sell it to the Denton retailers and when it hits the store it's AQUAMARINE or some other color. The Bookstoe and Voertman's sell what they can get. I have spent a lot of time looking for MEAN GREEN Kelly...the big companies won't do that until they can sell a huge quantity. Be patient the huge quantities will happen. -

I don't mean to solicit or advertise but...I have had a CLC license to produce UNT merchandise for 3 years. My brother and I have been selling in MG Village for the past 2 seasons and have had a tiny web site set up for the past 2 1/2 years. I have sold pretty well prior to football games but the web site has been almost non existent. Adverti$ing has been an issue. There are several problems; 1. The Bookstore and Voertman's can only purchase merchandise from a supplier that is licensed to produce UNT merchandise. Those suppliers DO NOT make special provisions for the color the University is using. Most of them sell for multiple Universities. UNT uses Pantone color 356, a very specific green but that has nothing to do with the color af clothing. They are at the mercy of suppliers so when ordering "kelly" there is no guessing what color will show up. 2. UNT does not sell enough merchandise for the retailer to require the manufacturers to produce a specific color or the quantity to commission the apperal to be produced for them. I would guess Michigan State, Marshall, ND all have retailers that produce logoed garments that are the correct color. 3. When the University changed the color I had just finished the second half of the football season so I had the "old" thread on hand. When I got the new thread color it is VERY difficult to pick out which is old and which is new so the branding color is very similar. 3. The University wanted lighter colored clothing and unis because it stands out more on TV etc. so they contracted with a company that would offer more "kelly green" which if you look at their web site, they don't. It has been very difficult to find the true Mean Green color but I have done it. With ALL of that said here is the bottom line...I am in the middle of a new web site(same address) that will offer far more of the correct color of Mean Green than is currently available, I will be selling in MG Village prior to football games and I am working on retail space for a more permenant spirit shop. Any one with questions please e-mail me and I will be happy to share my experiences with you. todd@shopmeangreen.com -

I agree that Kelly is more distinctive in the stands but I like Hunter as a color. Hunter is more available also. I am wondering what color toothpaste green is? I do like the NT color Pantone 356 as a color no matter what name you put on it; Kelly, Gridiron, Irish, Grass, etc. As I have stated before it is difficuly to find that color of clothing (except tee shirts) but I am always looking. If you go by the name Kelly you get a wide range of colors. I would love to open a spirit shop in Denton but I live in Lubbock so it is more difficult to do. If anyone wants to go in on a store let me know. I can do it for about 50K. -
It's all in how you pay respect I suppose. My gut says tone it down a bit. A goat would be funny. ALSO, If this is a CLC licensed product for sale to the public the University must OK it prior to sales. If there is a possibility of bad press hopefully they have considered it.

I went to the Tech game yesterday and thought the MeanGreen did a great job. I was impressed by the pitching. Not many good hits by the Lady Raiders. I don't know much about the team but they looked good yesterday.
-
I wen to to the game yesterday and loved it. I counted 5 NT fans in the stands. There were about 300-400 people there. I didn't catch the attendence # announced. I thought the Mean Green played a great game. Susan hit a nice HR AND there was a strong wind blowing from Left-Center field. I think the fence was about 200 ft at that point so she probably would have hit it 230 or so without a wind. GO MEAN GREEN.

I only wish we had the selection of clothing that Northwest and Southlake High Schools had on display available with North Texas logos. What did they have that was so great? Everyone buys from the same clothing manufacturers...unless they make their own of course. If it is available for SLC it is available for UNT. The athletic department signed a deal with a retail provider that doesn't offer very much MEAN GREEN even though that was suppose to be the whole deal.BTW... Soon, shopmeangreen.com will be way more mean green in color. I guarantee if it's Mean Green and I can find it , it will have something UNT on it. Sometimes you just have to know where to look.

Lubbock is not that bad. I have lived here for 10 years. The facilities are really nice and the fans are great. He won't be stuck out in the cotton field. I grew up in the hill country and lived in the metroplex. There may be 10 times more stuff to do in the metroplex but with traffic it takes 20 times longer to get there. Take a drive out of town and look around...not much different than Lubbock. I would love to have the Tech program.
-
Me too. BUT...Tech hast the hot shot fo Lubbock committed for next year at QB and he may not get much attention from TX, to play QB at least. I would worry about OK, Mizzu or A&M(yuk). If things go well next year as I expect them to, he would do well to come to NT and play QB. I will never believe that SMU, TCU, Rice, Baylor OKSt, UTEP, Houston are better places than UNT!!! The big fish in a smaller pond always gets more attention than a big fish with a bunch of other big fish in a big pond. IMHO

http://www.texastech.rivals.com/content.asp?cid=641763 I thought this was interesting. I hope the link works. If not maybe someone can fix it.
-
I think the band is great. I wish it was a little bigger and "show-ier. Quality does outweigh size, in music at least. I still want to fix the Talons!!! The Talons are the "spirit" organization. IMHO it is their job to promote excitement at the games - starting on Monday. They are on campus all week...we are not. I want to see UNT flags all over Denton and the northern metro area. I am working on that myself.

Rivals Recruting Rankings - Not Too Bad....
ShopMeanGreen replied to stebo's topic in Mean Green Football
As soon as I found names of potential recruits to NT I looked for them on Rivals. Most of them were not listed at all. As soon as they were listed as verbal they had 2 stars. Who evaluated them after they gave a verbal? My guess is no one. Just a WAG. If they didn't have offers from Big12 etc they must be 2 star quality. I don't understand how a kid who is 1st Team 5A All State from Texas is a 2 star anyway. Let's just watch them play. -
Mean Green Questions And Agendas
ShopMeanGreen replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
I watched as many recruiting sites as I could. I never saw anything about this kid anywhere but here. It make sense to me that if this kid was really good TD would have known about him. Was the information passed on from the past administration or did they take all of the Ws off the computer keyboards? I can't believe that every other D1 coach that may have wanted him would back off because of some questionable comitment from UNT. Nothing is solid until signing day. If my son had some deal with a coach and I did not get a note, call, smoke signals or something I would be selling my goods to someone else. It's a dog eat dog or lion eat bear world out there, sit back and whine and you are going to get left behind. Sounds like sour grapes to me. If this kid ended up at WTAM, likely a ship could have been better used. -
