Another benefit of title IX, with them being a club team they may not be able to afford the costs associated with going back to Atlanta for the national playoffs. I'm checking on what they need to make it happen and will update everyone when I get some info. NT Club Hockey team headed to State Playoffs February 05, 2003 The Eagles' ice hockey team already made the playoffs this year, and many expect them to reclaim their title as state champions. The top six teams make it to playoffs, and the Eagles are in first place in their league. However, finances, which include plane tickets, hotels and other expenses, may prevent the team from competing again this year for the national title in Minnesota. Last year, the team finished ninth out of 40 teams at the national championships in Atlanta. The Eagles, a club team, does not receive funding from NT's athletic department. "It's pretty upsetting actually," said Sproles, about the possibility of not returning to the national championships this year. "We're definitely good enough to go," Sproles said. The Eagles will determine if they will return to the national championships in a meeting to take place soon, Sproles said. The Eagles expected to play Texas A&M last Sunday at Texas Ice, but the game was cancelled and is planned to be rescheduled soon. - Christina Hanford

It's my understanding Mike Jones (DeGrate teammate at MCC) is sitting out this season due to transfer rules, seems like i'd seen that somewhee before, to save eligibility. Also has anybody seen a good site for keeping up with Watsons' numbers, I tried looking at the Houston newspapers but not much luck, thanks.

I agree he was definately a bright spot last night.

Davis got 21 tonight only 184 left.

And to think Southhall is only a sophmore, so unless he leaves early we've got 2 more years. I think the nickname Godzilla would be fitting since he's ugly and definatley tears up anything in his way. It was particularly disstressing watching him point to a fellow teammate in the direction of the goal and literally shake it to the point of rocking the goal, pretty impressive! I did like the talons/students behind me asking for him to smile repeatedly after his mouth met J's elbow!

saw both stories last night, and they both dscussed the upcoming cuts. Ch 8 had Dr. Pohl and his thoughts including a possible increase in tuition costs, then followed up with a disgruntled student who said he couldn't afford tuition as it was and would really have problems if tuition goes up again.

I'm looking at doing the Hotter N' Hell 100 in Witchita Falls August 23rd and wanted to see if anybody has done it before or would like to join me. I'd like to put a "Team North Texas" team together to help train/ride. E-mail/PM me if your interested. Link to race info (Last years info, this years info is not up yet)

Currently Chris Davis is third on the North Texas all time scoring leaders list with 2,086 points and needs 205 to break Kenneth Lyons record of 2,291. With 10 games minimum left this season he needs to average 20.5 points per game. Davis' career scoring average is 20.1 points per game, however so far this season he is averaging 18.1 ppg. The good news is so far in Sunbelt league play he is averaging 20.7 ppg. My question to you is do you think he'll fall just shy of the record, squeak by, make it with no problem? Personally I think it depends on how he does these next two games, with both being against the cream of the conference it will set the tone. I bet he makes it though! In last years games he scored 28 in the first La-La meeting and 18 in their final meeting of the season. An additional note CD needs 44 to pass Jesse Ratliff and move into the #2 spot on the all time list.

Men's basketball: Jones: Win Saturday could jump start UNT in conference action 01/25/2003 By Tim MacMahon / Staff Writer The losing streak stands at four games for the Mean Green. That’s not the number, however, that North Texas coach Johnny Jones is focused on entering Saturday night’s game against Sun Belt West Division foe South Alabama. "We’re one win away from things getting better," Jones said after UNT’s 74-62 loss Thursday night at New Orleans. "We’ve just got to roll up our sleeves and make sure we play well on Saturday and try to make sure we get that victory, and we’ll be right back in the middle of things. It’s still early." Tip-off is at 7 p.m. at the Mitchell Center, where the Jaguars are 7-2 this season. South Alabama (9-8, 3-3), led by first-year coach John Pelphrey, has already surpassed last season’s victory total. Guard Chris Young, a junior college transfer, has stepped into a starring role for South Alabama. He leads the Jaguars in scoring with 17.6 points per game. Point guard Demetrice Williams, who averages 14.9 points and 5.8 assists per game, has also played a key role in the turnaround. UNT has struggled to build upon the success it experienced in Jones’ first season. The Mean Green (6-11, 1-4) is five games under .500 for the first time since it was 1-6 last season. "We’ve got to keep our heads up," said UNT swingman Chris Davis, who averaged 26.5 points in two meetings with the Jaguars last season. "Last year we had a long losing streak [to fall to 1-6], and we were able to turn it around and get a lot of victories in a row. Anything can happen. We just need to play to the best of our ability." UNT swept the season series against South Alabama last season. The Jaguars won both meetings against the Mean Green in 2000-01.

Shawnson Johnson enrolls at UNT
ScreamingEaglesFan replied to LoveMG's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I e-mailed a very good source regarding SJ eligibility and their response was "Shawnson Johnson will become eligible at the end of the fall 2003 semester and play the remainder of the season. That's it for him." -
I saw Smith and Roniger were questionable for the game, means maybe they'll be back soon!!

Looking at what JJ signed last year and the commitments' so far this year I calculate only 1 more scholarship available in this years class. The 5/8 rule (enacted last year) states you can only sign 5 players per season or a total of 8 in a two year period. So with last years class (Harris,Roniger,Thomas and Degrate) and this years so far (Calvin Watson 6'5" G, Mike Jones 6'7" F and Shawnson Johnson 6'9" PF the transfer from LSU ) gives us 7 with only one more to give. So far schools have been filing appeals (unsuccessfully) for additional ships but the NCAA has not budged, (two examples Univ of Ariz immediately after enacted and recently the general at TT) That coupled with the loss of Jermaine Green, Chris Davis, Lee Green, and Rusty Chiles could really hurt our chances for improvement. I hope JJ can find us a consistent big man it seems Justin Barnett is just not able to stay healthy (of course there's probably only 116 other D-I teams that would like the same thing!) The signees all have great numbers but i'm a little concerned about consistent rebounding and our presense in the middle. Finally watching Boxell in his limited minutes i've been real impressed with his passing abilities 10 assists in 4 games (caught other players off guard a few times) I wonder how much this will affect Ronigers playing time when he comes back. Your thoughts?

Thanks for the info! -
I'm working on something and wanted to see if somebody could tell me 1. the players that JJ inherited from Vic Trilli's last recruiting class (3 signees I believe. Did they include Miller and Erskin or had they already played for Trilli?) 2. Who JJ signed in his first class (before his first season, he signed one player was it Justin Barnett?) 3.I remember Ron Harris, Scott Roniger, and Ty Thomas (as well as the loss of Sam Byrd) but was Michael DeGrate part of that class as well? I want to get the final pieces then i'll post the results, thanks!

There's a quote from Dallas Mayor Laura Miller that " I wish that the university had been envisioned for downtown," Miller said. "A downtown campus would have been really teriffic. With all the empty buildings we have downtown, we could have done something terrific." She has no clue what type school and magnitude they envision for UNT Dallas. I'd like to see where they put the dorms etc in those empty downtown office buildings!! If she'd check that is what the University Center of Dallas is for which houses courses from UNT,UTA,aTm Kingsville etc. Dallas is getting their medacine, and to think I didn't feel her loose cannon ideas could really make that many waves in Dallas politics! Anybody know some conference boards
ScreamingEaglesFan replied to ScreamingEaglesFan's topic in Mean Green Athletics
Thanks are there any particular ones you like? -
I frequent our very own sun-belt forum but was curious if anyone had some good c-usa, mwc, or wac conference boards so I can get my fix of off season rumors during the slow period? Thanks.

Check your sources, according to the ESPN BB PPV schedule it doesn't show anything for NT on their schedule, so let us know if you hear differently. ESPN Fullcourt PPV Schedule PS I'm not sure I'd really want to see this game on TV. Auburn is 10-2 and they haven't been playing cream-puffs like those on the Baylor schedule. They've beat Rutgers (8-3), Southern Miss (6-4) and Troy St among the schools most recognizable. The bright spot with playing them is they lost to Western Kentucky and Western Michigan, maybe us being a directional school will help!! In their last four games they've outschored their opponents 342-234 or by an average of 27 points per game.

On last nights broadcast in the post game show Hank D said Will Smith had a severe leg cramp and was going to be fine. To which George D replied that was one of the worst cramps he'd seen, said Smith couldn't even straighten it out! Awasom practiced with the team for the first time yesterday and JJ said he needed to learn the plays and probably would not see any time against Baylor. I also agree that after the season last year our expectations were probably too high and we're not sneaking up on anyone anymore, kinda like last years football season. I too expect that with JJ and time we'll be contending for the NCAA invitation but not this year.

Can Hopkins get a medical red shirt?

Granted Colorado is in the Big XII and this is a home game but going into the game tomorrow they are 4-3 and look at the powerhouses they've faced. Cal Poly W 97-69 Stetson W 107-74 @ NMSU L 75-71 Georgia L 71-70 @UMKC W 62-59 Chicago State W 80-61 @ Rice L 80-61 I know NMSU is a good team but am not sure about the rest. Plus the fans are growing restless and calling for coaches job, seems they're predicting a 7th or 8th place finish in Big XII, might be some internal chaos.

Harry and Lo, Now that football season is behind us is there anyway you could put the links to the hoops teams we'll be facing up? Thanks keep up the great work!
