  1. fixed. ...no offense, Rick...
  2. A Bowl game created purely for TV. Otherwise, why Yankee Stadium? I could see a bowl game in the new Giants/Jets stadium when it's finished next year. But this is a stadium designed purely for baseball. And the seating/sight lines will be worse than Oakland Coliseum, worse than all of the 1970's circular all-sports stadiums (Philadelphia/Pittsburgh/Cincinnati/St. Louis), worse than - dare I say it? - Fouts Field. Yankee Stadium Football layout They might as well play the game in Javits Center - it would be kind-of like the Kibbie Dome. ... I see Stebo beat me to it...
  3. I'm thinking it's half-full of Katrina "refugees". Yes, 4 years later. My wife & I stayed at a LaQuinta in Jackson, MS on our way home from our vacation this summer which was half-full of them. We chose the motel because it was the first one we would reach from the north, and didn't even think why it was $20/night less than all of the other LaQuintas in Jackson. When we got there, we found a full-time security guard patrolling the property, an interactive Audio/Video surveillance system for the lobby, and regular drive-throughs by the Jackson police. How did we know the "residents" were "refugees"? It wasn't hard to figure out, New Orleans is less than 100 miles away. But the clincher was the box of expired food and unused diapers in a box marked "FDA" sitting next to a trash can. It actually wasn't threatening, but the place was pretty run down, like LaQuinta would have otherwise closed it if it wasn't for the government money. Anyone ever have the guts to stay at "The Pines" motel in Lewisville??? I can't believe it's still standing. It looked bad when I first arrived in Texas 30 years ago. Even Wikipedia's Lewisville entry says You can even buy yourself a hooker at the Pines Motel on the corner of Business 121 and I-35E.
  4. 4 reasons I didn't try to set up a game-watching party in Houston for the Alabama game: - until a week ago, I didn't think it would be shown on TV, even on PPV. - Kickoff is at 11:20am, I didn't think anyone would show. This thread pretty well confirms that. - The Fox & Hound on Westheimer is the official Alabama alumni watch party location; I don't think I'd want to be there. Yes, we could go to SRO or somewhere else, but... - Saturday is the Jewish New Year, and myself and several others will be waiting until sundown and then watching the game from my DVR. Don't forget that the game will be on Ch. 55, "The Tube". Is there another away game that will be televised? If so, we'll definitely have watch party. If not, there will be 2 BB games in Houston plus one at A&M we can get together for soon enough!
  5. Looks like we picked the wrong year to play Rice.
  6. This is what amazes me: Celina, Texas Celina (pronounced suh-LYE-nuh) is a city[3] in Collin and Denton County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,861 at the 2000 census. He'll be playing in front of a crowd almost 50 times larger than his hometown! Glad to hear that:
  7. I'll let you answer your own question, Rick: double that... 67 yards in addition to the width of the field! The new stadium will make a huge difference - for cheering, and for the Green Brigade. For those who were on the alumni side - wasn't it great to have the Green Brigade playing in front of you, not 33 1/2 yards away? OK, so they didn't march in the rain...
  8. Great! We'll be able to watch it in the Houston area - Ch. 55 "The Tube". I just set it up on my DVR.
  9. I bought some toothpaste-green cheapo ponchos at Academy for 79 cents each. "One size fits most". In its wrapper, it fits in a shirt pocket. Essentially disposable. I'm expecting they're thinner than the plastic bag I took them home in!
  10. Anyone remember the game against Southern Miss on Oct 24, 1981 at Fouts? I call it the "Flood Bowl". It was raining so hard that day that Denton cable's weather channel "rain gauge" was ticking off 1/100th of an inch every second. There was a rumor that a player almost drowned with all the standing water on the field. At the stadium mixer in Houston last month, I asked RV whether he was in that game, but apparently he had graduated from USM the year before. Never mind the score, that was the Bob Tyler year...
  11. Maybe if they didn't have to drive all the way to Bozeman, MT for their home games, the attendance would be better! Angelo State 28, Texas State 48 7:00 PM ET, September 5, 2009 Bobcat Stadium BOZEMAN, MT But seriously folks, how does ESPN get that wrong?
  12. Come on down to the Fox & Hound, 11470 Westheimer. It's outside Beltway 8, just past Wilcrest, on the right (NORTH!) side. According to the Alumni office, we have about 30 RSVPs for Houston - I hope they all come! Beware - Westheimer is being repaved - they've scraped off the old asphault, and it's bumpy as hell.
