  1. When it comes to 1930s college football movies, I prefer this one, far removed from reality: Pigskin Parade The football team from tiny Texas State University (hmm!) Is accidentally invited to play Yale (instead of the University of Texas). Hilarity ensues! The cast includes Judy Garland, Jack Haley, Betty Grable, and Elisha Cook Jr.
  2. I thought the article was going to be from "The Onion".
  3. The Year College Football Ate Itself A sarcastic take on the current state of college football. FWIW, the link was sent to me by a relative who's a Michigan alum, and a retired government professor at Claremont-McKenna.

  4. To answer my own question, no, Higgins's cannon was much larger: Try again, UT Sorta Almost!
  5. My dad had* one of those "toy" cannons. They're pretty awesome in a back yard, but... not in a football stadium. Isn't that what Higgins had on "Magnum P.I."? * I'm going to have to search my parents' house before it's sold and see if the cannon is still there!
  6. Somewhere along the way, possibly during the Dickey years, I met Alex; it turned out that our times at NT overlapped by a few years. If I remember correctly, he lived in McConnell Hall, and dined at Bruce Hall cafeteria; I lived in Bruce Hall from 79 - 81, so it turned out that we knew a few of the same people. Whenever we would bump into each other at games, he would bring up those days, and would ask who I had kept up with. Those were always enjoyable conversations. I can't remember when was the last time I saw him, possibly not since 2019, since I haven't been to too many games since the pandemic. I'm not sure, but I seem to recall him once coming from San Antonio to Houston for a game at Rice. But he's been active on GMG all this time - I had no idea he was ill. Until now, I had no idea that we were both born on September 22nd, but 4 years apart... R.I.P., Alex. I once asked him how he came up with the name "Danish43", but I can't remember what he said...
  7. Oil > Accounting > Furniture I'll have to agree with @ntmeangreen11
  8. There's a photo somewhere of Booger and his brothers riding horses. He could have been on the Polo team too!
  9. I don't know, but it's not from Gallery Furniture.
  10. NO! While the SOW (diving eagle) was not used on helmets until the Jan 1st 2014 HOD bowl (because of RV), it was introduced in 2005 with the university branding initiative. I tried to use the Wayback Machine to find a UNT branding page from 2005, but apparently none were captured until 2012. But I found a reference to the branding initiative in the Summer 2005 issue of the North Texan (https://northtexan.unt.edu/archives/s05/branding.htm) and two photos with the SOW in the Winter 2006 issue (https://northtexan.unt.edu/archives/w06/index.htm) - one of a student wearing a "I Bleed Green" T-shirt at homecoming 2005, and one of Todd Dodge at his hiring press conference in front of a background with the SOW. So the SOW was introduced in 2005, as I thought. Now, can anyone find a photo of the Australian Air Force using their logo that far back? Edit: If I could figure out how to search for them, I'm sure there are some threads here on GMG from 2005 about the logo, and I bet it started to be referred to as the "SOW" almost right away.
  11. If DD was our coach now, would Diet Coke boy be replaced by Coke Zero boy? Question, no answer.
  12. It doesn't hurt that Rice is adjacent to the Medical Center.
  13. Especially the crypt of John Paul Jones: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Academy_Chapel
  14. Not a road trip for those of us who live down here!
  15. Eppy was... "effy"
  16. I remember being told back when the stadium was being built that the pavilion was intended for the Letterman's association, but they declined, so it was offered to the alumni association. If that's true, then there wouldn't have been anything built for the alumni at all.
  17. "Before that", IDs didn't have a magnetic strip or barcode that could be scanned. 😉
  18. I've been thinking about that... I've never heard anyone say that UH plays in tdECU stadium, but ECU is nowhere near UH, while TCU is just down 35W from NT.
