More likely to hurt our cause than help it. Social Media is a powder keg waiting to explode. -
College Sports Programs Losing Big Money
FloMoGrad replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
Pell Grants are need based. That's not payment for their services, that's an acknowledgement of their socio-economic backgrounds and ability to be supported thru their educational pursuits. Just as many non-athletes blow their Pell Grant money on all the things you mentioned as well. If you quarantine a situation and isolate it enough, then you can make whatever discipline and theory work. Everything he makes sense in a purely economic sense, but College Football and the NFL are not just economic issues. They go much deeper than that. Outside of tuition, college football is the largest revenue generating source. Parking tickets are but a fraction. His #'s on athlete's at both level's is scewed as well. FBS can only have a max of 83 scholarship players. Walk-ons are paying members of the university, and partially fund their own athletic expenditure thru the Athletic Fee. NFL Rosters are 53 man, with a practice squad of roughly 8 or so. So now we're talking about 83 scholarship athletes vs 61 Professional Athletes. Add in that every year you lose and gain new scholarship athletes, constant systemic turnover, and the numbers become pretty close in my view. NCAA plays a smaller schedule because we are still trying to have them be students correct? NFL is about to go to 18 games if the Owners have anything to say about it. The only issue I'll agree with him on is the BCS. The thing the NFL has in place that college football doesn't, is free agency and a salary cap. You want to fundamentally shift the economics for any sport, that's the only way to do it. Schools are a business, agreed, but a non-profit business, it's how my donations are allowed to be written off. As a non-profit, you automatically throw a mission towards profitability out the window and instead focus solely on whatever mission you may endeavor on. So asking a non-profit entity, or 120 of them, to suddenly focus on the economic factors at work, is a little naive. And the NFL is the only for profit, non-profit status holding entity in the US. Congress gave them special exemption. Talk about economic sense, the NFL operates Tax-Free, how the hell does that compute in. The whole situation is just so much bigger than a strictly economic point of view. It's a social, etheral, political emotional passion filled issue. That's why I said I think this guys misses the boat. NFL have owners, they take the risk and reap the reward. College's don't have owners, they have alumni, boosters, but not one person at the top reaping the financial rewards. Doesn't get much more cut & dry - For profit vs not for profit. -
Looks like Andrew Power, Brent Osburn & Michael Stojkovic are all enrolled and on campus for the Spring. 3 names not going anywhere.

Anybody else catch the fact that dude was 1st Team all District his Junior Yr on Offense & Defense, was special teams player of the year as well as utility player of the year. Kid is amazing, really excited to see how our secondary transforms over the next 2 yrs.

We don't lose a single one and pick up at least one more OL/DL. Gaines is a beast, dude doesn't stop on the trail.

Sa Express Confirms Lairamie Lee
FloMoGrad replied to All About UNT's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Nice article, but the comments section are unbelieveable. Why so much hostility from a group that has zero leverage in any discussion regarding football. Befuddles me. Welcome aboard Mr Lee, glad to have you, get ready to go to work, we've got some ball games to win. -
Good Take and notice how Texas Tech is having problems finding interior Dlineman. They don't just grow on trees. Still can't believe we lost out on the DT to Ark State after he verballed to UNT. Good Class, some quality talent and rebuilding the way we all envisioned.

I got a feeling that may have more to do with it than we give credence to.

I know Coach Eckert at Kilgore runs a good program and he's a hell of a man. If Justin goes in and lights it up he'll be getting calls from all over. Also gives an extra step to the learning curve, from 2A - Juco, then Juco-FBS. I wish him the best of luck, hope he finds a home somewhere and we'd all love to see him walk-on at UNT.
-
He'd be better off going to Kilgore JC or Tyler JC and getting reps in as a Safety or maybe outside LB. We'd love to have him, don't get me wrong, but I think the young man would be better served playing some Juco ball, proving his merit and moving on from there.

If I'm not mistaken, he's had Pitt on his list for quite some time. Warner for Carrington works fine for me. Another piece to the puzzle. Mr Carrington, enjoy those beautiful Pittsburgh Fall and Winters.

You haven't friended him on facebook and found out for us yet? Thought you were the social media guru.

It was college day on the Tour that day, that's why... That would be so sick to see a claw or Mean Green somewhere in contention! I cannot even imagine the possibility, but you have me trying I play amateur tournaments throughout the yr and whenever a tourney falls on the day of a UNT game I sport my mean green hat and polo, try to keep it official...
-
I definately vote him in for Punt Return kick off return duties.... Several sick punt returns, and a kickoff return that was just speed. Other than that, he could definately take the place of J.Jackson form last yr. Similar frame, similar game.

I'm telling you the man has got a bonus or incentive in his contract based off recruiting. Guy is a straight up Beast. Gaines deserves some extra coin for making it happen and getting in the athletes we need. That's half the battle. Now just go coach these boys up and let's win some damn football games...

Lloyd Carrington Final 5 Schools
FloMoGrad replied to Mean Green Matt's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Vito reported it in today's blog that he committed to Pitt. http://meangreenblog.dentonrc.com/archives/2011/01/and-were-off----unt-lands-high.html -
Another great addition. Really shaping up to be an outstanding class. no 51 on the DMN Top 100 in the area. Solid in my book. That means maybe 4-5 more signings left correct?

College Sports Programs Losing Big Money
FloMoGrad replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
I think the guy misses the boat, personally. Schools spend money on athletics because they provide instant brand awareness. I would know nothing about Boist St or Gonzaga without their athletic depts, in addition to every other mid-major, non-AQ, football, basketball program. Head Coaches deserve the salaries they get, they take all the risk, you're placing the most valuable revenue generating piece of the University and putting it in one man's hands essentially. Only thing I'll agree with is BCS = cartel. I have no perfect solution to offer, but I don't like the option we have now. Do players deserve compensation above the scholarship, housing and meals. Probably so, but that means you'd have to do it for every athlete, male and female, and now we're getting in to crazy talk. Everyone knows the College Football is the farm system for the NFL, and what's so wrong with that? I paid for my education after having a soccer scholarship for the first two yrs. And let me tell you, I may not have then, but I definately appreciate the value of my education, I'm still paying on it. While most athletes don't realize that right away, they will when they're 30 and don't have a mound of student loans they're still paying back. -
11 game winning streak is what I'm looking for. Win out to finish the year, win the conference tourney and at least 1 win in the Dance. I'll be happy with a lot less, but we can still dream at night can't we?
-
Thank you gents, I figured it had to be something along those lines....

He's playign for SMU this yr? I searched for a previous post and didn't see anything listed on here.... Did he graduate and go to SMU for post grad or what? Did we release him from his scholly so he could go play down the street? Sorry in advance if I'm bringing up a bad topic or sore subject, just cruising thru channelsurfing.net, saw the pony's and rice on, flipped it on and Mangrum, caught me off guard.

Def. Tackles And Where To Find Them
FloMoGrad replied to DeepGreen's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
A lot of their settlement to Irving came from D/FW Airport and AA, from what I understand. Some of the best defensive players in the league today are polynesian. I'm absolutely on board with above statement, we should be sinking our hooks into the offensive and defensive lineman at Euless.
