What To Watch For At The North Texas Spring Game
FloMoGrad replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
Or mentioned the QB battle with Brent O... Or brought up our need to replace both our starting DT's... I honestly don't know if we get any answers to our questions heading into 2011 during the spring game. Answers are only going to come Sept 1st and beyond... -
Butler had the #9 player overall in last yr's NBA draft class. VCU had the #15 player in last yrs NBA draft class. I believe the majority of fans, especially fans like us, from a non-aq school, love the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament for the exact reason of seeing a George Mason (2006), or Butler (2010) or even 2 "mid-majors" have a shot at it. And you're big boys, have been getting their tale's whipped by these other guys this entire tourney, NBA players and all. I want to see the best teams battle it out, I want close games, I want passionate play. That's what we've seen and what we'll see in the final game as well.

I tend to agree with this perspective more.

Mccarney Brings New Approach At First Practice
FloMoGrad replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
So a projected starting OL of 292, 292, 280, 300, 299 is an undersized line to you? Then a DT rotation that as of now includes: 97 Abbe, Richard DT 6-4 357 So. Lubbock, TX (Monterey HS) 90 Boutwell, Ryan DT 6-3 254 So. China Spring, TX (China Spring HS) 96 Cantly, Tevinn DT 6-4 336 Jr. Arlington, TX (Lamar HS) 94 White, Kyle DT 6-2 309 Jr. New Orleans , LA (McDonogh 35 HS) Not including the fresh DT we all expedct to come in and compete in the Fall that registers right around 300. I see one undersized DT. 47 Akpunku, Brandon DE 6-1 240 Sr. Cedar Hill, TX (Cedar Hill HS) 44 Bellazin, Aaron DE 6-2 232 So. Everman, TX (Everman HS) 43 Crewe, Nick DE 6-4 230 Fr. The Woodlands, TX (The Woodlands HS) 49 Gaines, Frank DE 6-1 229 Jr. San Diego, CA (College of San Francisco) 67 Long, Ryan DE 6-4 240 Jr. Leonard, TX (Leonard HS) 66 McCoy, Brandon DE 6-2 265 Jr. Carrollton, TX (Creekview HS) 48 Obi, K.C. DE 6-2 240 Jr. Mission Hills, CA (Bishop Alemany HS) DE's we might be a little light at, but even 230, our lightest, if lean and quick can be a handful at end. I'm just no buying the whole undersized bit. Other than Alabama, there's not one school that's gonna dwarf us next yr on either line. We've got the talent, we lost 9 games last yr, 5 by one possesion. 6 losses by one possesion or less in '09. Talent keeps you in games, ie Dunbar, Robertson and the like. Coaching wins you close games. -
Drc - Denia Closes Road During Games For New Stadium

Ding Ding Ding... -
Keep in mind Coach Dan spent the past 4 yrs in Florida, so he may have some in roads already built with a lot of these recruits.

And educating members of our community who may not otherwaise have the means to attend college, that doesn't help out the community? Professional athletes generally only help the country with entertainment walue, but as the NCAA does such a great job of reminding us, the rest of the athletes that don't go pro, go on to become teachers, dr's, lawyers, business people. They add value to the community.

"I like sex, I like money... Dude, you're freaking me out." "Go away, I'm beatin"

It was either he signed, or he looked up, he doesn't have time for both, what with an NCAA investigation and all...

Mccarney Brings New Approach At First Practice
FloMoGrad replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
Countless others have, but we have not. The experience at the head coach position alone is unheralded, let alone throughout the rest of the staff. D-1 experience in the SEC, the Big East and the Big XII, and that's just the HC. I don't remember hearing but a small minority that were not pleased with this hire. Count me as one of the excited bunch, with sky high expectations, like playing close to .500, which is absolutely possible, or even finishing with a winning record. Crazy talk I know. We didn't get "out played" the last few yrs as much as we got "out coached", consistently. With that said, we are not one of the Big Boys, only in coaching salary's are we relatively close, and even then not so much. We still don't look like a D-1 school, with as much admitted by Coach Dan several times, and those types of candid and honest assesments leads me to believe we might actually have a head coach that knows what he's doing. That and the fact that every hire save one has D-1 coaching experience, including both coordinators and almost every position coach, and were being wooed by other D-1 schools, leads me to believe the entire staff as well might know what they're doing. Still not a Bog Boy, still don't look like a D-1 school, but that doesn't mean we can't compete and win in the belt, and/or play .500 football, finish with a winnning record and/or go bowling. -
Green Gang: Roster Report (Medical Redshirts)
FloMoGrad replied to Mean Green Matt's topic in Mean Green Football
From what I understand this is a submit the paperwork and see what happens kind of situation, so what exactly have RV and staff failed to do? Is there more to it than that? "special case involves the eligibility of a player who loses the majority of a season to injury. Popularly known as a medical redshirt, a hardship waiver may be granted an athlete who appears in fewer than 30% of his or her team's competitions (with none coming after the midway point of the season), then suffers a season-ending injury. A player who is granted such a waiver is treated for the purposes of their eligibility as though he or she had not competed in that season." Not trying to dismiss the accusations, just seeking to clarify what it is we think RV and staff did or did not do that they could or could not have done, to cause this outcome to turn out differently? -
2 conference USA schools, a Big Ten school and an SEC school. That's a tremendous job on Rick's behalf. I think this is a great schedule and having Houston and IU as our 2 OOC home games was tremendous as well. Opening the season with Houston and our stadium opener is a calculated risk that I hope pays off for us. We'll have an extra week of preparation on Houston, as they open up on the 3rd against UCLA at home. Interesting to look at some of the future schedules as well: 2014: At Texas wk 1, home against SMU wk 2, and then at Army unscheduled and Home against Tulsa unscheduled. That could be an interesting yr to say the least.

Western Michigan Dons The Pads In Basketball
FloMoGrad replied to Green Dozer's topic in Mean Green Basketball
This is an old practice, seemingly resurfacing each yr. sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?id=1957123 May be time for us to take a shot at it -
How many kids we recruit from Florida anyway? Seemed like a reach to start with.
-
Denver on the road. Love to see them drop one to start a trend.
-
But how many 5 star athletes don't pan out at all? I'm not saying the gap between SEC recruiitng and ours is small. I'm saying the difference in player 150 on the top 150 and 350 is very negligable and for the most part any kid who blooms late and has a big Sr yr is not going to have the ranking, because they start handing them out when these kids are soph. and Jr's. TCU hasn't signed a 4 star rated player till this yr. So we've got a lot of room for growth with the 3 star kids we can get now. All good, difference in perspective and opinion. You will never see me jumping up and down over and ranking service score. I'll never reference them in relation to a player's ability, the quality of a recruiting class, or for anything at all. Just my opinion. I don't care where they're ranked. It's whether or not we filled the needs of our system with the right types of kids. I know that's hard to quantify that, and that's really the only reason these stars and all started being such a huge deal, fans want some way to quantify how their school did in comparison to others when it comes to getting new players.

And certainly not sweating it when I contribute to UNT's said intellectual property. I pay for cable, HBO included. I pay for netflix. I buy the albums off artists I like or the rest of the time use pandora. For the things I cannot buy and access, there's channelsurfing.eu. And pirating anything french is just good business.

Urban Meyer On Texas High School Football
FloMoGrad replied to Harry's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
Urban knows the area well. When he was at Utah they recruited two players from Kilgore off my brother's national championship team there. Brandon Warefield and Thomas Herron. Both went on to the NFL. -
I'd be shocked if McCarney didn't implement this and really surprised if Chico had not already. Update: From the looks of things, we've been in this practice for a while: http://www.orangeand...1st-half/34292/

Espn Sun Belt 2011 Recruit Classes
FloMoGrad replied to MeanGreen61's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I, and maybe alone, don't want to build our program following their mold. But their wins are worth noting. They rely heavily on non-qualifiers and Juco Transfers.
