Here's another great piece of work from Texas Football. They do the research so well. Put a few back up QBs ahead of our transfer Chandler Rogers.
-
Good job is debatable. It has been noted in the past how they don't really do their research prior to doing podcasts. However, I will give them credit for this particular interview, it was enjoyable.
-
Yes, this was discussed at length last month.

The athletic department could do a better job promoting games in the community and on campus. Let's be honest, there are a lot of commuter kids and hipsters that attend UNT. Why not partner with the various colleges (business, education, sciences, etc.) to encourage attendance? Show proof you were at the game, get an extra credit grade (doubtful they would do that). Even just having signs or giving swag out on campus would do wonders. I remember when Dodge was fired, Chico went to the Golden Triangle Mall encouraging shoppers to go to the games.

A Deep Dive/Look Back into the 2019 Recruiting Class
jtm0097 replied to jtm0097's topic in Mean Green Football
I can think of 4 JUCO guys that didn't qualify during the Seth era. I'm sure there are more, but that's a risk going after JUCO players. -
After winning the C-USA West Division in 2018, expectations were high for the 2019 season. We all know that the team finished 4-8, and had a very disappointing season. How was recruiting after the 2018 season? Well North Texas did manage to pull off the 4th best C-USA class at the time, which was ranked 77th at the time. So how did this class do during their time at North Texas? Of the 26 players that signed, 4 made All-Conference (Murphy Twins, DeShawn Gaddie, and Kevin Wood). 10 of the 26 players either started or played meaningful snaps. The highest ranked player Deonte Simpson had 830 yards and 6 TDs over 2.5 seasons. Sadly, he had off the field issues and was kicked off the team in 2021. The Murphy twins were very dominant in their 3 seasons here. They combined for 22 sacks and were a force to be reckoned with on the defensive side of the ball. While they did have their share of personal foul penalties, they were very good here. DeShawn Gaddie started 33 games during his 4 seasons here. He had great coverage skills, and was a highly productive player here. Kevin Wood made the All-Freshman team and has played in 42 games. He is expected to take on a bigger role during the 2023 season. Quinn Whitlock started 28 games, and had a very solid senior season at DB. Asher Alberding played in 35 games, used primarily as a blocking TE. While he only had 2 Rec for 18 yards, he opened up several holes for our RBs. Damon Ward has played in 26 games, caught 47 passes for 689 yards and 5 TD. Damon has 2 years left at North Texas, and he should continue to develop into a solid player for us. Finally, Oscar Adaway III has been a wrecking ball of a RB for North Texas. He played in 19 games over 3 seasons. Oscar has battled injuries, but when healthy is a dominate RB. Oscar has 221 carries, 1197 yards, 8 TDs; 7 Rec, 37 yards, 1 TD. He should be one of the main RBs during the 2023 season. If he stays healthy, he could be an All Conference Running Back. This class had 3 players transfer in from other FBS programs. Dominque Harrison was a CB from Arizona St, he played in 9 games here, but wasn’t much of a contributor. Nick Harvey was a CB that signed with us from Texas A&M and South Carolina. Yes, we were his 3rd FBS school to play at. He played in all 12 games during his 1 season at North Texas. Nick had 64 Tackles,1 INT, 7 PBU, and 1 FR. D’Andre Plantin created a lot of excitement when he announced his commitment to North Texas from Virginia Tech. He did manage to play in 8 games at OT. However, we do not have any stats to tell how productive he was on the field. How did the transfer portal impact this class? As with every program in college football, this class had a lot of guys transfer out. Out of the 26 players that signed, 15 entered the transfer portal or left the team. The Murphy twins transferred to UCLA, DeShawn Gaddie transferred to Ole Miss, Asher Alberding to CAL, Khatib Lyles to Austin Peay, Jevin Murray to Sam Houston State, Will Kuhene to SMU, and Asher From to Kent State. Kealon Jackson, Kenneth Dotson, John Brunner, Jimmy Walker Chris Cassidy, and Leandre Davis left the team and never played anywhere else. David Sow failed to qualify and never stepped foot on campus. Overall, this class was a bag of mixed results. We had several play and making meaningful contributions, 4 All-Conference players, and 8 that simply didn’t pan out for some reason. I made an excel with a more detailed analysis. If you guys like this, I will do the other classes “20, 21, and 22” over the next few weeks. Anyways Go Mean Green and Happy Super Bowl Sunday! 2019 Recruiting Class.xlsx

Fun game to be at tonight. First game that I have been to in a while. We will be back for more.
-
I remember during the Dodge years they had walk on tryouts. A couple of guys that I know participated and 1 actually made the team.
-
I remember how the board reacted after this nepotism hire happened. UIW already hired their DL coach, so it doesn't look like he will be joining Gush or Phil's son.

It was interesting to hear Morris speak. He came across as genuine and thoughtful during his responses to the media aka Brett Vito's questions. The thing that stuck out to me is Coach Morris wants the guys to be here in the spring and he doesn't think much about recruiting rankings. He said some of the best guys that have played for him over the years were low level recruits. During his first year at Incarnate Word, he signed one of the lowest rated classes ever. A lot of those guys were all conference players for him. Coach said that he's happy with the class, but ask him again in 3 years. He emphasized how corner and tackle were needs. Since we will have an additional safety on the field (3-3-5 scheme), we will need to eventually balance the roster (lose DL and add DBs). I personally expect a few more DL will jump in the portal after spring ball. Coach also mentioned Sifa Leota was moved to MLB. He is 6'2 235, and already has the frame to play the position. A couple of quick notes from the press conference about some of the players (sorry if I missed anyone): He spoke highly about Jayven Anderson. Credited Coach Jennings to the great relationship he developed. Also mentioned that he will be in contention for early playing time. Evan Jackson, very athletic and plays multiple positions. Spoke about how he was also an all-district returner. Evan will start out at S. Coach Morris told an interesting story about Brian Nelson. Brian didn't have a great junior year, but instead of transferring to another high school, he bet on himself and continued to improve. Brian had 7 ints and 27 offers after his senior season. Taylor Starling's speed was brought up. He also talked about how he was a part of 2 back to back state championship teams. Kollin Lewis' athleticism was talked about. Kollin is a great basketball player, Coach Morris likes kids that play multiple sports. Kollin will play CB for us as well. Trey Cleveland had multiple P5 transfer offers, but he wanted to play closer to home. Trey already knows a lot of the terminology and should be an instant plug and play kind of guy. Larry Moore, long and athletic OT. Larry is currently at 280 and will need to add about 10 pounds this offseason. Damon Youngblood, another 10.8 100 M guy that will come down hill and knock the mess out of you. Phillip Hill, played a lot of ball at UNLV. He also played high school ball for the new ST Coordinator Drew Svoboda. Chandler Rogers, he talked about his playing experience and athleticism. Also mentioned how he wanted to be closer to home. Paula Vaipula, he talked about his playing experience at Georgia Tech. Said he should compete for playing time on the IOL. Matthew Moore, mentioned he will learn a lot from Larry Nixon.

None at all. Hopefully some of our guys test well at their pro day.

I know he transferred high schools from Denton Braswell (2021) to Frisco Lone Star (2022). It's possible this move somewhat impacted his recruiting. He did attend the spring game and was being recruited by Jim Gush of the old staff.

He's a PWO. Here is what I found reading up on him. Blake Fann Frisco Lone Star 6’2 230 LB Another prospect that I am in shock we landed as a PWO. 1st Team All District and 1st Team All State Linebacker. He had offers from FBS ULM and a couple of D2 schools. Just looking at his tape, he has the size to play MLB right now in this 3-3-5 defense. He can take on blocks while our other guys run free. He also does a great job of avoiding blockers and getting to the ball carrier. I was impressed with his tackling skills. If he comes in and works hard, I could see him getting put on scholarship next year. Stats: 12 games - 152 Tackles - 3.5 Sacks - 2 Forced Fumbles - 21.5 TFL’s - 8 QB Pressures - 7 PBU’s

Imagine spending 36k a player to go 7-5 in a G5 conference. SMU in AAC 7-5 SMU in Pac 12 5-7

Got it, so if I did this it would be around $3,500 per ticket for green level. Yeah, 1 ticket would cut into our vacation trips. My wife probably wouldn't "green light" it haha. I'll probably just go back to sitting on the lower level with the regular folks.
-
How much do 2 hub club seats cost? I put my deposit down for 2 seats but my usual season ticket holder buddy is going through a split up with his wife so I'm probably not going halfsies with him on tickets this year lol.

Exactly, that's my point. They don't do their research prior to podcasting. It's hard to take their coverage seriously.

Am I the only one worried about the Defense?
jtm0097 replied to El Paso Eagle's topic in Mean Green Football
Per his Iowa St Profile: Caponi has helped the Cyclone defense rank third (25.9- 2019), second (21.4- 2020) and third (20.5, 2021) in the Big 12 in scoring defense in each of the last three seasons, all totals among the top-50 nationally ISU’s total defense numbers have been just as stout. ISU was second in the league in 2020 (340.4) and 2021 (310.5). The Cyclones’ 2021 defensive effort ranked ninth nationally and was the lowest output by a Cyclone defense since 1984. There is a lot of good information here. From our board's scout @GMG24: Iowa State 178 Passing ypg, 20 Passing TD, 107 Rushing ypg, 8 Rush TD UNT 262.5 Passing ypg, 24 Passing TD, 197 Rushing ypg, 26 TD -
We have a really talented roster. Most of the offense is coming back. I know Aune, Mose, Jake Roberts, and (potentially Carroll/Brown) are gone from the offense. However, we did address their replacements. The new QB looks way better on tape than Aune and hopefully our new OL/current ones step up. On Defense, we are losing KD, Gaddie, Whitlock, and Sean-Thomas Faulkner. Our defensive scheme is changing, so we will need some of the guys to step up. I look for Larry Nixon, Jordan Brown, and Kevin Wood to take over the LB corps. Nick Nakwassah (hurt this past season) who started at Central Arkansas as a freshman should have a bigger role in the secondary. Phillip Hill the incoming safety from UNLV (hurt in 2022 but had a decent 2021 season) to also contribute. I'm not sure who will take over for Gaddie. There will be additional departures after spring ball, so hopefully they get another CB in here. Regarding the D2 players Mazin Richards was a first team all conference player for us. Jordan Smart had 330 yards and a TD for us last season. Jordan started coming on strong at the end of the season. With the transfer portal, D2 and FCS are essentially development schools for FBS. Sadly, G5 schools are doing the same for P5 schools. I have been around since the Dodge years as well. This team does have a big challenge next season. The new coaching staff will need to manage game/clock situations better than the last staff. Our defense would get stops after long drives, only for the offense to get the ball and go 3 and out in under 1 minute. They need to play complementary football. Anyways, it's Sunday I need to go to Home Depot before the other middle age people in the suburbs get there. Have a good weekend!

I posted this on another thread about recruiting. These are the 247 recruit rankings by average for this year's class. How can you even complain about the quality of our class when Eric was hired on December 13th, and the first signing period was December 21st. If you account for the holiday break, he was only given 6 weeks to put together a class and a staff. He didn't even have his entire staff filled until after the holidays. We didn't have that many spots to fill. For the time he had, and the quality players that he was able to add after the 1st signing period, this is not a terrible class. He signed 2 of our highest defensive recruits ever. Additionally, he signed a starting QB, C, and G that were starters at FBS schools this year. I can't wait to see what this staff does next year with a full calendar year.
