The general perception is that SMU is a better program because it has more money. However, SMU (and UNT) need to develop regional rivalries. Both of us play in conferences with opponents that don’t travel well and we suffer from our own fan apathy when playing schools 2-3 states away. This series is a no brainer for both schools. This game garnered more local coverage/interest than either us of would have received with any conference opponent in either of our respective conferences. Moreover, we need to give the local talent a reason to stay home. Every time you turn on the TV and watch a game you always see DFW talent playing at schools you wouldn’t expect. We both lose local recruits to schools like La Tech and Tulane, Houston etc. However, the more important this game becomes the easier it will be to convince recruits that college football is alive and well in the Metroplex. And while a loss might hurt SMU perception wise in the short run – I believe a win against UNT 4-5 years from now will help SMU (assuming UNT continues to improve). Every year SMU goes 5-6 in a conference with opponents that no one cares about - the distinction between SMU and UNT diminishes. Sooner or later perception catches up with reality. SMU can have all the money in the world but if joe-blow fan won’t buy their product – it will stagnate or die as a program

I just drove a thousand miles (round trip) to see this game and would do it again knowing the result. While we have a lot of things to work out we at least have hope for the future. It’s nice to know that we were still in this game until the very end and I expect that Coach Dodge will see to it that we improve over the course of the year. Many thanks to Coach Dodge and the rest of the team.

You are so correct. Their stadium is great. If we can build something close to that level of quality/design I will be ecstatic.
-
Does anyone know if the series is going to be renewed? It just makes way too much sense but I haven't heard anything about next year.
-
I'm worried about our defense also. I don't know if we are just that slow or is OU is just that fast or both - time will tell. I just think we got a dose of reality tonight. DD left us bare and we're going to need more time to get some more players in here.

I think the Nebraska loss was something like 76 to 0

Complaining isn’t all bad. There were some people on here who thought there was nothing to complain about last year and yet – complaining is one of the reasons we have new coach today.
-
Good points regarding the revenue. Still though - there is something to be said for having the game in Dallas with the skyline in the background every time they break for commercial. There is also something to be said about keeping sport venues in and around the downtown area. It’s just too bad JJ wanted too much for his stadium.

We also know the difference as well. Sorry - I couldn't pass that one up.

I think it's important to never forget the lessons of the past otherwise history will repeat itself. Someday Dodge will be gone and when he is - I hope we are wise enough to remember that a good coach also includes someone who is positive about the university and the program. -
Harry, Please add me to the list. I can resend my info if you require it. Big Thanks to you and everyone else involved!!!

That was one of the funniest exchanges I've read in while. Classic!

Boise State..national/co-national Champions!

One of the best most exciting games I've ever seen!!!! And to think - we could have been in the WAC with them . . . . . . . . . -
That will only work if there is a plaque at or near the field explaining who Andrew Smith was, what he did for the team in 02 and how he died (DUI). Otherwise, our new recruits, two years from now will not even know who he is. So in my estimation – if you want to honor him and use that as a reason to teach others– you still have to acknowledge what he did that cost him his life. Otherwise you disrespect everyone who has ever been a victim of drunk driving.

Does anyone know if that video is posted on Youtube or anywhere else on the internet? I would like to find a version of it.
-
It was also in the Brownsville Herald - way down in South Texas.
-
True but if Dodge succeeds then UNT succeeds. It will be that much easier for us to make the next hire. We're also getting tremendous publicity just from the hire itself which is also a huge plus for the school's image.

Working for Daddy ain't so bad when it's clear that Daddy is a pretty good coach. I'm not saying Price is better than Fisher and if RV can land Fisher then great. I'd be shocked if we could afford him. Anyway, who would you rather have - Butler, Nix (with no Texas ties), Chambers or Price? We know that RV made contact with all of the above except for Price. Price at least has experience with X & O's and his offense at UTEP is pretty good. He's also suppose to have experience recruiting the DFW area. The fact that worked with the Jets is just an added bonus. Finally, judging by his comments to the media, I think he would be excited about the job which would be a nice change. I bet he's also learned a thing or two from good o'l daddy about how to market the program. I'm just saying give the guy a call. That's all. How can you not? As long as he's not addicted to T-bars or something
-
Well Fisher is now out. I just don't see how you can't interview a guy with his background and credentials - especially when he talks about the job to the media in such a positive manner. See P.59 of this link for an overview of his experience - http://www.utepathletics.com/pdf3/41022.pd...&DB_OEM_ID=2100 See also this Link re: his interest in the job - http://www.dentonrc.com/sharedcontent/dws/...5.3aae1486.html When people ask - will you support RV no matter who he chooses? - I say it depends on who is hired and who was not interviewed.
-
This is ridiculous. How can this be? Please RV - Please contact Price

I agree with NT80 I could be wrong but it seems to me that some of the people that were excited about chambers (b/c of his Texas ties) are also excited about Nix who has no Texas ties. Nix may be a good coach. I just hope we hire a good coach who will also get the fan base excited about the program. In essence we need someone who will market our program 1) On the field (X and O’s – exciting offense) 2) During recruiting; 3) And to the community at large during the off season (fund raising) Right now, the only names who seem to fit that bill at least in my mind are Eric Price, Todd Dodge, Carthel and/or Mathews.
-
We know there are more qualified people that are interested in the job who are not one of his "buds".
-
I hope Eric Price has been "officially contacted". If not, this search has been a sham.
