The App State win today got me thinking
GreenEggs&Ham™ replied to Dannymacfan's topic in Mean Green Football
Is it lost on everyone that two of the wealthiest P5 football programs (A$M, ND) were taken down by G5 teams from Appalachia (App. State and Marshall); a region known for decades of grinding poverty? I think something bigger is being uncovered already and that is that the NIL $ may not buy wins after all. These guys are essentially yearly free agents who may have little to no loyalty to their college teams and may lose to much less talented and funded programs. They are just essentially football mercenaries. Heck why would a guy even accept a scholarship if they were making more than $100K in NIL $$. I wouldn't because then there is no contractual obligation between me and the Univ.? Even NFL teams don't let this crap happen for the same reason. NFL players typically have longer contracts. I have to admit that yesterday was one of the happiest days of my college football watching years seeing ND and the A&M lose AT HOME to two schools with not even a fraction of the funding. Very glad to see both teams season end and all the NIL $$ wasted. -
A Silver lining from the SMU beating?
GreenEggs&Ham™ replied to Tom McKrackin's topic in Mean Green Football
Very glad that you posted this because this and DentonStang's comments above are exactly what I believe to be wrong at UNT. This is nothing new and dates back to the early 1980's I believe. North Texas needs an ironclad ethics policy and enforcement level compliance program in their athletic dept. There is NO accountability and lots of Money floating around NT athletics. It's not a lack of money at NT at least not up to this point in our history. For those of you that work in the private sector, tell me you're a$$ would not be fired from a company where you were paid these kinds of salaries and you produced such mediocre results. -
North Texas has name recognition up here as a school and admittedly that is because of the large size of the institution and not sports success. I would say both SMU and UNT are irrelevant on this new 2022 college football landscape for sure. Although I do hope SMU cracks the top 25 this week (doubtful you will).

It's doubtful that even 30% of the people where I work have even heard of SMU, much less what city it is located in (Highland Park?). They are Irrelevant here since SMU doesn't win National Titles in the modern era. So that Twitter post seems especially stupid and childish from my perspective. And I will never understand the bashing that goes on between universities in Texas (not just SMU doing it). Trashing other universities just isn't done up here so much.

***OFFICIAL GMG SMU vs. UNT IN-GAME DISCUSSION***

Such a drastic & quick improvement in talent for SMU or so it sounds. Hmmm. How can that be? -

Good grief. Just pathetic defense. Giving up 31 points in a game makes it difficult to win a game. But 31 points in the 1st half is devastating. -

3rd & 16 conversion. Good grief, so typical of NT. -

I can't even type my gripes and complaints fast enough. Special Teams play sucks, Defensive backs play shaky, unnecessary trick play. Can we pull off a Houston vs UTSAcomeback? Doubtful. -

What in the h&)) was that? Well at least we got 3 points. Why does SL NT teams always seem to spot the opponent a couple of TD's the 1st quarter and then play from behind the rest of the game. -

Is it really in the 90s at the game? 69°F here in Kentucky. Hard to understand how this game is going because I can't watch it. Fumble by Siggers is a HUGE break that NT needed though. -
Austin Peay now leads WKU 10 - 7. Agree! North Texas should defeat teams like WKU this year. And I really think North Texas will win this year. Starting tonight in El Paso.
-
Well, I can say there were 3 huge red (expensive looking) busses and the Austin Peay FB semi-truck parked in the lot of the Holiday Inn Convention Center last night. Inside the convention center I could see 40 to 50 young men dressed in the same red track suits. Fake sports from CBS? AP 3 WKU 7 1st

Drove by the Holiday Inn Convention Center here in Bowling Green, KY last night. Surprised to see that the Austin Peay football team was already here for Saturday's game against WKU despite being only 61 miles from WKU. Tyson Helton stated on his radio show that he thought AP/WKU game would be a fight and a four quarters game. I think today is AP's Super Bowl of sorts.

Interesting that FIU and North Texas are the only G5s without P5s on their schedules. Maybe just a fluke this year with zero P5s, but North Texas has generally avoided the "body bag" schedules of the past in recent years. But isn't UNT a more affluent G5 school than many other G5's? The two P5 land grant institutions in Texas make UNT finances pale by comparison for sure, but UNT looks to be doing well (resources, stadium, practice facilities, huge enrollment! etc.). So North Texas doesn't need to schedule a lot of Bama, OU and Texas games for the $$.

North Texas vs. Tennessee Vols
GreenEggs&Ham™ replied to Coach Andy Mac's topic in Mean Green Football
Enjoyed watching these clips. NTSU defenders were flying all over the field and I saw 3 sacks in one of those clips by NTSU d linemen. Odd offensive formation by NTSU. 2 men on one side of the ball and 4 on the other side. But that is coming from me, and I never played football, so I don't know much about the nuts and bolts of the game. The referees seemed fair in the clips which is unusual from what I have heard about big time college football pre "SportsCenter" days. -
Travel for this upcoming season
GreenEggs&Ham™ replied to NorthTexasSportsNetwork's topic in Mean Green Football
Will most likely attend the WKU game depending on the weather since I live in Bowling Green. It can get cold here at the end of October. Also rains a whole lot here. Not going to sit in cold & rain. It was WKU's turn to visit Denton for the 9th game of our series with WKU by the way. Looks like C-USA flipped one last ╭∩╮ to North Texas as we exit the conference hence the 2 games in a row at WKU. -
One street over from mine was destroyed. About a dozen or so homes are now abandoned over there. But my home was spared and received no damage. Tornadoes are weird like that. Kentucky doesn't get that many tornadoes which makes a December tornado so rare. Lost power for 3 days and it was a struggle to stay warm. I am looking for better back-up heat sources for my home. Need time and space to regroup.

Since I live in Bowling Green & do watch WKU BB, thought I would give an unofficial GMG.com mini scouting report (survey format). WKU likes to play zone and force their opponents to drive in on the 7'5" Sharp or take open 3 pointers. Zone defense allows them to rest as they have some stamina issues with their rotation. Sharp was not a starter at Hopkinsville H.S. and only averaged < 18 min/game in Junior College. Sharp can't play 35 minutes...27 minutes or so is all. But he has 74 blocks this year....so one of the nation's leaders in that category. ...and this will be WKU's first Thu, Sat series of the season. They could get tired early. Forcing teams to play from behind in the 2nd half is WKU's strategy. This is so their opponent will play more aggressive on defense and WKU can draw fouls.. ...to get to the foul line. WKU wants to hit more free-throws than their opponents attempt, if that makes sense. As of this posting, Keith Williams (6'5" G & Cincy transfer & 4-star recruit) eligibility for the UNT game is unclear. Other Diddle Arena is a notoriously difficult place to play for opponents. Snow won't be an issue. Warren County has 100 snowplows. 7" of snow last week and 12 hours or so to clear. Hillbillies do not reside in Bowling Green. They live in the Appalachian region of Eastern KY. I will not attend the game due to the crazy high COVID-19 cases here.

When will we ever win a bowl game?
GreenEggs&Ham™ replied to Tom McKrackin's topic in Mean Green Football
The red zone stop by Miami was huge and kudos to their defensive line. But one of those plays the middle LB waltzed right through untouched. I kind of rely on you guys for football analysis, as I know little about the game. But it seemed that some of our offensive plays were totally busted plays. Aune just standing in the pocket for a few seconds and then getting dropped. Just crazy. Our punter flipped the field a few times for UNT and Novil looked really good. Those were the positives that I saw. -
Interesting trivia and I have no clue who this could be.
