Jason Bean has entered the portal
MeanGreenZen replied to NorthTexasSportsNetwork's topic in Mean Green Football
I saw Bean execute zone-read options and he was NOT GOOD at it. Bean usually lost yardage on those plays. He may run like a cheetah in a straight line, but he has the elusiveness of a fire hydrant. The guy gave zero jukes. Lamar Jackson has an elusiveness similar to Barry Sanders (in addition to great speed). Bean’s strength as a runner was when the defense had all the receivers covered and he could pull the ball down and run into green space. No one was going to catch him. And he had some amazing gains that way. Not running a zone-read. -

If you were Austin Aune, wouldn’t you rather QB a college football team than having a job filling out TPS reports? Aune got a $1M bonus from the Yankees in 2012. If he is smart, after taxes and normal life expenses, he still has around $300K of that money. That net worth is way more than most 28-year-olds in the workforce. He’s still way ahead in $$$ even if he plays college football beyond age 30. Plus, he is from Argyle so his parents are probably rich. Keep playing Austin! -

Bean was fun to watch and boy is he fast. You can’t compare him to Lamar Jackson though, because Bean has ZERO elusiveness. Bean never could earn the starting QB job in high school and he couldn’t hold on to it at North Texas. How much would having a real QB coach to learn from and build a relationship with have helped Bean this season. I don’t really see Bean as a FBS starter but will be interested to see how his career unfolds. I have a suspicion we have already seen it’s peak.- 126 replies

Jason Bean has entered the portal

So all of these transfers are competing with the incoming high school recruits and JUCO recruits for one of the 25 new scholarships each school gets every year? Seems like the math won’t add up. -
But we aren’t getting any extra scholarships! It’s not “lose one, get one”. If a kid transfers with two years left, you just lose out on two years of having a scholarship player. We only get 25 new scholarships every year no matter how many transfer out. And every transfer in (who gets a scholarship) counts against that 25. Correct?

This dude would likely have been the new featured WR in an offense that just had its’ featured WR lead the country in TDs, earn All-American honors and be a high projected NFL draft pick. I don’t get it.

Tre Siggers transferring to SMU
MeanGreenZen replied to WanderingEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
I wish Siggers a long, happy and fulfilling life. For his football career, however, I hope he loses .5 second off his 40, fumbles every time he touches the ball, gets moved back to DB and loses every game that he plays with SMU. -
We've got to keep our composure (DC TIDBIT @ THE BOTTOM)
MeanGreenZen replied to TheReal_jayD's topic in Mean Green Football
The easiest position to replace is RB. I liked Siggers too, but you can’t build an offense around him as he has not shown an ability to stay healthy. I know you think he was freshman Jamario the last few games of the season, and he did look good. But even when he came back from the knee injury he was still missing games. I understand that there are unlimited reasons why a player might transfer (many non-football related). But I am curious why Siggers left? It was obvious that even if he was third on the depth chart that he would still get a good amount of work here. Does he want to go be a feature back somewhere? Who is going to give him that role? I don’t think he can withstand that pounding. Will be interesting to see where he lands. -

Siggers was fun to watch. But was he ever really the same after that knee injury? IMO, he went from dominant to just OK. I believe Siggers can be successful at his next stop but a lot of these guys are going to discover that the grass ain’t always greener. And some of them are going to be left without a place to sit once the music stops. -
What is the scholarship situation for when we lose a transfer? Are we still limited to 25 new ships? Or can we replace a transfer with a transfer?

OSU LB Carson Kropp Transfers to UNT
MeanGreenZen replied to MGNation92's topic in Mean Green Football
He was a walk-on at OSU who didn’t play much. Better be a walk-on for us too. Hope he is awesome! -
Why the heck would Rambo transfer? He was a starting WR in an offense that routinely produces first round picks at that position. Weird.

Well, the Alliance of American Football went broke in 2019 and so did the World League of American Football several years earlier and the USFL before that. That’s because minor league football doesn’t work. You know what does work? College football. And why does it work? It’s not because of Justin Fields or Trevor Lawrence. Those guys are just replaceable parts that come and go. The value in college football is the PASSION and LOVE that people feel towards Ohio State and Clemson. The school spirit and the interest that creates. I don’t care for Texas or OU but I watch every time they play because it’s a big deal and not to see Sam Ehlinger or Spencer Rattler. Eliminate the current 10,000 scholarship FBS football players and plug in the next best 10,000 in their place and no one would know the difference. You would still have sold out stadiums and record TV ratings. If those guys want to get paid to play football before they are eligible for the NFL, let them go play somewhere that is not affiliated with a college and see how much money they make. It will be less than the value of a football scholarship.

The XFL went out of business. Twice.

U of H - 2 Yrs - 7 Wins - $8 Million

Bussey had 31 catches for less than 300 yards on the season. I used to think he was better than Darden, LOL. -
And I do remember when we played DEFENSE in Denton... Brandon Kennedy, Adrian Awasom, Cody Spencer, Taylor Casey, Chris Hurd, Jonas Buckles, Craig Jones, Don Mcgee, Markeith Knowlton... We don’t have a single player on defense the caliber of any of those guys. Can you imagine if we could have put that early 2000’s defense with the Mason Fine/Graham Harrell offense? We’d have had a Coastal Carolina-like season.
-
We need P5 transfers, but how many of them have ever become impact players for us? Marcus Trice for sure. Pegram kinda. Hedlund? (But he’s a kicker) That linebacker from Oregon was ok. Does Aune count? I don’t think he was ever on a Fall roster for Arkansas or TCU. Seth’s inability to land these blue chip DFW bouncebacks has been pretty frustrating. Where were we on Ja’quinden Jackson? He signs with Utah to sit behind Charlie Brewer? The UNT defense has the same problem as the Texas Rangers. They get decent players, they just can’t develop them.

Possible Darden replacement for next year??
MeanGreenZen replied to Uncle's topic in Mean Green Football
No one will ever replace Jaelan Darden. -
It’s probably unfair to judge the play of UNT signal callers this season since they didn’t have a real quarterback coach or a traditional offensive coordinator. But with neither Austin Aune nor Jason Bean establishing themselves as the future of the position for UNT, the Mean Green may be in the market for a transfer quarterback, especially with the NCAA expected to grant a one-time exception that allows transfers to play immediately next season. Below are interesting potential quarterback transfer candidates with local ties who could land at UNT: Grant Tisdale, QB, Ole Miss: We’ve seen the Allen HIgh School to the SEC to UNT route before. Tanner Mordecai, QB, Oklahoma: A dream scenario for UNT. Baylor is the favorite to land this guy. Alan Bowman, QB, Texas Tech: Bowman has been plagued with injuries throughout his career. Productive when he plays, but availability is the most important ability. Kade Renfro, QB, Ole Miss: The former “Austin” Renfro was once committed to UNT, switched positions to WR at Ole Miss and has now entered the transfer portal. This kid can’t stick with a first name, a school or a position. This is a pass for me. Chris Robison, QB, Oklahoma: Amazing on the field and a total knucklehead off it. Kicked off the team by both OU and FAU, he’s originally from Mesquite. Shawn Robinson, QB, Missouri: He’s more accomplished at transferring than he is at playing quarterback. He’s started at TCU and Missouri (but couldn’t keep either job) and won a state title at Desoto after transferring from Denton Guyer.

‘20 QB Austin Renfro - Stephenville
MeanGreenZen replied to 97and03's topic in UNT Football Recruiting
I watched him play in person at Stephenville and never thought he was a candidate to play WR. I guess that probably contributed to his transfer. But it is really weird to get switched positions immediately and to jump in the portal before your first season is even over. Were they trying to run him off? -

This kid can’t decide on a position, a first name or a school... -
Our current backup is a better passer than a Mean Green Hall of Famer?
-
Can someone please clarify for me: This season does not count against eligibility for anyone does it? So a fifth-year senior could play this season then come back and play again next year. Is that correct?
-
So you want to be the HC at UNT
MeanGreenZen replied to TheColonyEagle's topic in Mean Green Football
UNT is a damn good job now. It was not a good job when Darrell Dickey or Todd Dodge were here. I’m disappointed that Seth is struggling right now, but he is still .500 at UNT. How he finishes this year and next season will seal his fate. I will allow myself to be entertained by that ride. -
