You can’t control what the concession workers wear. We are just lucky to have concession workers. If someone likes the Green Brigade more than the football, good. Their kid is probably in the Green Brigade. Need more of those parents to attend. I arrived off the highway on campus a full one hour before the game with my blue parking pass (that I donate extra to the MGSF to secure) and my two sons. We sat in traffic and finally made to park in the dirt. We missed the first two series of the game. That is the part I am disappointed about. Of course, I would have probably forgiven it all with a win over SMU.

I don’t see anybody else starting up a Mean Green collective. Are you starting one? If not, why not be grateful that someone is?

Ticket office is just trying something different to increase attendance. I like it. The deal they are offering is FOR A BUSINESS. So it is not really fair to compare it to what you get for individual season tickets. If you can get a couple thousand extra people into the door over the course of a season and convert a couple hundred of those into repeat customers then this promotion is a great success. It is a loss leader. Don’t get offended if you are a long-time season ticket holder. You are important. You are also “Old business”. This is about “New business.”

Not really. Any good players will just transfer for their junior and senior seasons.

The current one-time transfer exception is not good for college football. Even professional athletes have contracts that bind them to teams for certain time periods and allow organizations a fair opportunity to build a winning roster. A transfer model must be adopted that offers athletes the option to explore other opportunities, but still incentivizes schools to invest in and develop players. I propose a model where all players have the opportunity to transfer and be immediately eligible AFTER they have accumulated the equivalent of 60 credit hours at their current institution AND again after they graduate (if they still have eligibility remaining). If a player declines to transfer when they hit the 60 hours, that player loses the opportunity to transfer and be eligible immediately until they are a grad transfer. Any player may elect to transfer during the transfer window at ANY point in their career, but transferring before or after your “free” 60 hour transfer or “free” grad transfer will cause you to sit out a year AND lose a year of eligibility. Hardship waivers are no longer available for anyone. If your dog gets sick and you want to transfer, too bad. If someone in your social studies class looks at you funny, too bad. If your favorite coach gets hired somewhere else, too bad. You can still transfer during any transfer window, but there are consequences for doing so outside of your “free” opportunities. The transfer window also opens and closes in the spring. Let’s say it is open from February 15-April 15. If you opt to explore your transfer option when you are eligible, you cannot participate in offseason workouts or spring football at your current school and you must sign with your new school by X date to be eligible for the next football season. If you do not sign by X date, you must wait until the next year’s transfer window and lose a year of eligibility or you may drop down a level to Juco, FCS, DII, DIII and be eligible immediately. The 60 hours must be accumulated AT the current institution. If you graduate high school with 30 hours of college credit, that doesn’t count. Everyone starts at 0 towards the transfer requirement when they enroll at their school. This proposed transfer model allows players who fulfill their obligations as student athletes the freedom to fulfill their athletic potential while also rewarding schools for the investments they make in these players to adequately plan and build winning rosters.

The difference between now and previous downtimes is that now just feels hopeless. Any decent player we get, will just leave us for more money. How much would a P5 school have paid for a sophomore Brandon Kennedy or a freshman Jamario Thomas or a junior Mason Fine? Hard to invest in this when you get gut-punched by your all conference linebacker transferring (at the end of June!). I don’t know what the solution is, or if there will be a solution. All I know is that since the selfishness of NIL and the transfer portal hit college football, I care about it less and less.

I also bought basketball season tickets for the first time ever last year even though I could only go to three games since I live so far. Renewed those too. My Mean Green basketball season tickets cost me about what I paid to go to ONE Mavericks playoff game. Great things happening across the athletic department for those who care to look. Absolutely. UNT athletics pre-RV vs. post-RV is unrecognizable. RV’s mustache alone deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

Drez was great. Such a smooth shooter and played hard on defense. I loved watching him. Kinda ruins his legacy by transferring. I understand a kid transferring if the team sucks or if he isn’t getting to play. But Drez played a big role on winning teams in front of some decent crowds. Why transfer?

SMU is no blueblood. Why would Grant go to a school with as many challenges as SMU where a 23-win season (barely missing the NCAA tournament) and a trip to the NIT gets you run out of town? Better play for Grant to stick with North Texas until a real blueblood comes calling. And they will.

No, in the real world you can’t just quit and take whatever job you want, often there are contracts that must be honored and also non-compete clauses that limit free movement. I bet even the bluebloods are tired of losing their backup QBs and third WRs.

My daughter’s rec basketball league has stricter player movement rules than the current NCAA. This version of the transfer portal is bad for the game and must be amended. The portal should be available for the guys stuck on the end of the bench who don’t get an opportunity to play (Kason Martin). But there has to be some restriction on player movement to allow teams to build rosters and not lose every valuable player they develop without compensation. A few suggestions: If you DID NOT get to play in some number of games for your team last season, let’s say half the games (but people smarter than me can figure out how many games it should be), you can transfer and be eligible to play immediately. This protects the players who don’t get an opportunity in their current situation. But if you DID get to play in X games, you can only transfer under these conditions: 1. You have to sit out a year and lose a year of eligibility. Or 2. The school that you transfer to must “transfer” one of their 25 annual scholarships to the school you are leaving. If this happens, you are immediately eligible at your new school. This allows superstars to transfer schools, but also compensates the school that invested in and developed that player. In the scenarios above, everyone wins: the guy stuck on the end of the bench, the star who wants a different opportunity, the school that lands the star and the school that loses the star. Prove me wrong.

I mean, I buy season tickets, bring my family to the games, donate to the MGSF, read everything I can about the team, etc.. I’m not a Lovelace, but I feel like I do my part to give the players something to invest in. And I do it because I fall in love with watching guys like Mason Fine, Jeffrey Wilson & Zach Orr grow and compete and represent my school. If the guys like that are just going to transfer as soon as they can, it is not really fun anymore and maybe I should reevaluate how I spend my time and resources. That sucks, but it really is how I feel right now.
