  1. I don't think you can compare earlier players with current players on the basis of statistics. You might look at the percentage of the teams total yardage produced by the runner. I only saw Abner in the bowl game on tv following his senior year. I did follow him closely with first the Dallas Texans and then the KC Chiefs. He was outstanding. For his time, he certainly was as good as anybody. I did see Bobby Smith play in college. He was speedy, but not in the same class as Abner.
  2. Mack Brown said his biggest recruit his first year at Texas was Ricky Williams staying for another year rather than going pro. McCarney's biggest recruiting challenge his first year may be getting to the returning players. They seem to be bitterly disappointed and stronly for Canales. McCarney will need to reach these returning players as well as recruiting new ones.
  3. How dare these ISU fans claim it is the most difficult Div I school to have a winning team. We all know from former comments that we have that title.
  4. So besides many of the people on the board, the students, the Daily, Vito, Snyder, Norm Chow, Herm Edwards, Canales family, and Canales himself, and a few others, no one wants Canales as HC.
  5. MeanGreenGlory has an excellent point. In order to have credibility, we have to dominate the conference we are in. Currently, the conference is the Sun Belt. As long as that is our conference, domination of the Sun Belt should be our first goal. If we don't reach that goal, how can we hope to accomplish any of the other goals we want to reach.
  6. Signing requires agreement by both parties. Unfortunately, one party cannot act alone.
  7. Steve Kragthorpe's record as a head coach is like 44-43 and 15-21 for his last stop in Louisville. He took a preseason top 10 team with, I believe, 5 NFL players coming off a major bowl win and went 6-6 and wound up being fired. Based on what he did last as HC, I don't see what recommends him over an up and coming assistant.
  8. You are playing to win. You take the penalty and get a new set of downs. With two minutes, you have plenty of time to do whatever you want to do offensively. If you give up the ball with two minutes, there is assurance you will even get to overtime. You go for the win.
  9. Henderson is DII. They were picked preseason to come in last in the Gulf South Conference West division.
  10. As far as recruiting Texas, I don't remember Mack Brown having many Texas ties, and I don't think anyone can argue wiht is recruiting success (Maybe what he has done with what he recruited). What he did have is what we have at UNT, an excellent University. The coach's reputation may help him get in the door, but once there he has to sell himself, his program and his university. I don't know if Canales can do this, but I don't think we should disregard him because he does not have Texas ties.
  11. How can you lose someone to whom you have made no offer?
  12. Everybody is right in some sense. We certainly do need to have high aspirations. With that said our goals should be a series of reachable but ever increasing goals. As long as we are in the Sun Belt, it makes sense that our first goal is to dominate the conference we are in. Scheduling winnable games should also be part of our plan. Frank Broyles was often criticized for playing the Sisters of the Poor in non-conference games. Supposedly, his response was "In December, no one remembers who you played only if you won or lost. What about Vandy instead of Alabama. The money might not be as good, but a chance to win over an SEC school or Iowa State instead of Texas or OU with a chance to win over a Big XII or whatever the conference may be called. What we need is a real plan to assist the new HC, whoever that may be, to lead us to where we all want to be.
  13. Let us be honest with ourselves. What big name coach is going to be interested in us unless he is bringing major baggage. Which means we are taking a major chance on whomever that might be. I don't like to say that, but it would be like Tarrant County Community College hiring a Nobel prize winner.
  14. North Alabama is DII not IAA. It is a member of the Gulf South Conference.
  15. As I said in an earlier thread, Bowden's success at North Alabama is due to recruiting that cannot be duplicated at the DI level. He has recruited players that have had to leave bigtime programs for disciplinary or academic reasons. I am not saying he is not a good coach or that he might not work out, but don't expect him to be able to bring to UNT what he has done the past couple of years. The players he has made his rep on there could most likley never get in UNT.
  16. UNT 90 is right. College students and parents are not the same as they used to be. If we are honest with ourselves, recruiting for UNT is not easy in the best of times. Maybe these guys would be okay, but we should not kid ourselves that their past will not be a problem with some parents and potential recruits. We can minimize the problems all we want and talk about giving people second chances as a parent do I take a chance. Remember the recruits will have other options. At least, we hope they have other offers.
  17. Having grown up in Parker County, I would like to side with FFR; however, in this case, TFLF has made an excellent case. I think the comment about starting every press conference for a while being what happened at USF would be enough to cause us to look elsewhere. Indeed, it is not one person or bust for us. Decisions like this are never easy, and there are always pros and cons. It just seem in this case the negatives outweigh the positives.
  18. So, if I have a son who is good enough to play D I ball and has several options, I am supposed to want him to play for a coach that has been accused of mistreating players. Maybe they all do, but I doubt I am going to be in love with one that has publicly been released for such action. Remember, the player we want is good enough to have choices.
  19. If you were an employer, would you hire someone that had such a public problem with his last boss.
  20. Before you get carried away with Bowden as a coach, remember, he is doing this with players that have been kicked out of D I schools. Many of them had major behavioral problems and were dismissed from where they were. He has not shown an ability to recruit players that you would like to have on your campus.
  21. Am I glad some of you people are not my supervisor. Can't we be happy for 24 hours or maybe even more? Dodge did not come here with the intent of destroying UNT football or world peace nor to cause global warming. It takes no more energy for us to be positive than it takes to be negative. As far as I know no one on this board has been asked to make any of the decisions. (If I am wrong I am sorry.) Of course, no one is happy with what has happened, but when something good does happen, we immediately start giving reasons why it really wasn't any good. I intend to enjoy the W until O jave reason not to. By the way my first year at North Texas, the boys won 2 games. Talk about frustration.
  22. I want to make sure I understand this thread. Dodge really does not want to win. He really does not care if his son receives another injury after permanently damaging his arm and watching his first and second team QB's go down with season ending injuries. It is his fault or the S & C coach's fault for all of the injuries.
  23. The NCAA likely avoided a lawsuit which they very well could have lost. Unless the rule stipulated you had to be eligible to return to your original school, he met the rules. He had his undergraduate degree in hand. He enrolled in a graduate program the original school did not offer. These have been the only conditions generally stated. According to what I heard, Masoli met the letter but not the spirit of the rules. Judges have not been too lenient with universities that added conditions to the rules after the fact.
  24. The interesting thing about increasing admission standards is that almost always there is a temporary dip in enrollment followed by an increase. If we were to increase admission standards past evidence indicates we would get even larger.
  25. I think all of the LA schools LA Tech, ULL and ULM have a lot to worry about. The state has announced a 23% cut in funding for all schools. LSU is looking at draconian cuts. If they are not able to get some additional taxes passed all of the schools are looking at serious problems. I don't see how the athletic programs can expect not to have large cuts. We have already seen UNO stepping down to D III. Costs may force some decisions on these schools that they have avoided making.
