REPORT: WATERS WANTS OUT OF KANSAS CITY Posted by Mike Florio on February 27, 2009, 2:17 a.m. The honeymoon could be over quickly in Kansas City. Jason Whitlock of the Kansas City Star reports that Chiefs Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters has asked the team to trade him or cut him. Waters’ nose is out of joint because of a perception that new coach Todd Haley and new G.M. Scott Pioli are arrogant. The nine-year veteran reportedly was “offended” and “shocked” by communications with Haley, and by Pioli’s refusal to meet with Waters. Waters reportedly heard from Cardinals players at the Pro Bowl that Haley is “aloof, condescending and ignored by veterans,” and Waters reportedly concluded based on his communications with Haley that the information he picked up in Honolulu is accurate. Waters is signed through 2011. He’s due to receive a base salary of $3.6 million in 2009. The reality here is that Waters can huff and puff all he wants, but his choices are to play for the Chiefs or play for no one — and pay back bonus money that was, in essence, advance compensation for future services.

He was their RB's coach. I guess the whole LT mess didn't help him.

I like that we beat out Dickey for the RB! Football: Back felt comfortable picking North Texas 07:23 AM CST on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 By Brett Vito / Staff Writer Bob Wager saw his share of running backs as the head coach at Arlington Martin last season, and he believes North Texas might have landed the best one of the bunch late Sunday night when Jeremi Mathis orally committed to play for the Mean Green. Mathis was one of four players to pledge to play for UNT after visiting the school over the weekend. Mathis, Houston Cypress Ridge cornerback Royce Hill and their coaches talked about each player’s decision to commit to the Mean Green for the first time Monday. “I think Jeremi was the best running back in the Dallas area last season,” Wager said. “We have had eight players sign in each of the last two seasons. I have had a lot of highly recruited players and he is among the most highly recruited we have had.” Mathis said he had 12 scholarship offers and chose UNT over Utah State, Louisiana Tech, Co-lorado State and Air Force, a-mong others. Mathis (6-2, 208) rushed for 1,457 yards and was a first-team All-District 8-5A selection. He is rated No. 93 on The Dallas Morning News’ list of the top 100 players in the area. “North Texas is an awesome school,” Mathis said. “I felt real comfortable around the coaches and felt like I could spend four years playing football and going to school there.” Mathis joined his teammate, defensive lineman Joe Haw-thorne in committing to the Mean Green. Mathis said he wasn’t aware that Hawthorne had committed and it wasn’t a factor in his decision, but he is happy to be going to college with a high school teammate. “Jeremi is everything you want in a football player,” Wager said. “He has a great work ethic, is a team player and has all the physical tools as well.” Hill (5-11, 170) showed similar skills at Cypress Ridge, where he was a member of the All-District 17-5A team three times and made the first team for the second time as a senior. Hill intercepted three passes last season and was one of eight finalists for the Houston Touchdown Club defensive player of the year award. TexasPrepXtra.com rated Hill No. 35 on its list of the top 100 players in the Greater Houston area. Hill also excelled at returning punts and kickoffs. He led the 17-5A in punt return average and finished second in kick return average. “I was really impressed with the facilities, coach Dodge and what he is starting there,” Hill said. “UNT recruited me both as a cornerback and as a return man. The coaches want me to return punts my freshman year and said I might get a chance to play cornerback as a freshman as well.” Rice also offered a scholarship. “Royce is a tremendous athlete who can play both corner and receiver,” Cypress Ridge head coach Gary Thiebaud said. “He can play press coverage and has good ball skills.” Briefly … Northeastern Oklahoma State head coach and former UNT assistant Kenny Evans said Monday that former Mean Green quarterback Woody Wilson has enrolled at NEO, a Division II school in Tahlequah. Wilson started four games during his only season at UNT in 2006. BRETT VITO can be reached at 940-566-6870. His e-mail address is bvito@dentonrc.com . NORTH TEXAS 2008 COMMITMENTS

Long shots made Dolphins roster Posted on Tue, Sep. 04, 2007Digg del.icio.us AIM reprint print email BEATING THE ODDS Patrick Cobbs and Edmond Miles, long shots to make the Dolphins' opening day roster, were among a handful who found out their play during training camp had been rewarded. Miles, an undrafted rookie linebacker from Iowa, said Monday he called home to tell his mother the news. Once she received it, her screams of joy were overwhelming. ''I couldn't hear anything because of the screaming in the background,'' Miles said. ``My family is very happy for me. My girlfriend is happy. I have a lot of support out there.'' Cobbs, the Dolphins' fourth running back, said he knows his spot on the roster is a precarious one, so don't expect him to get too confident. Cobbs will be asked to play special teams, and he said he's eager to improve. ''I was excited, but it was short-lived,'' said Cobbs, who played in three games with Miami last year. ``The league changes every day. You have to get better every day to stay here.'' One of the big surprises was the release of fullback Cory Schlesinger, who spent 12 seasons with Detroit. Schlesinger signed with the Dolphins as a free agent in March. Miami plans to use rookie Reagan Mauia instead.

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jet...0,4176084.story Newsday.com Jets' Texas twosome go way back together BY TOM ROCK tom.rock@newsday.com September 3, 2007 Everywhere they go, people think Brad Kassell and Cody Spencer are brothers. The close friends certainly act that way. They play the same position, speak with the same Texas twang and look the part, too. Whether in a convenience store or the Jets' locker room, the sibling supposition is strong. But there's one way to tell them apart. Only one smiles. "He's more fun-loving and happy guy, and I'm grumpy guy," Kassell said recently. "I probably wouldn't want to be friends with someone like me." Yet here they are, friends and teammates who can't seem to get rid of each other. It started at the University of North Texas, where Kassell was two years ahead and played inside linebacker while Spencer played beside him at the outside position. After college, they were together with the Titans in 2004 and 2005. Kassell signed with the Jets in the spring of 2006 and Spencer, after being waived by the Titans before the opener, joined the Jets in late September. "It's been fortunate we've been able to play together as long as we have," Spencer said. "It's been kind of cool to have two players from North Texas getting to play together in two organizations." Added Kassell, "The odds of that are astronomical." They play mostly special teams, so Spencer and Kassell don't spend much time together playing defense. Spencer carved out a special-teams niche on the Jets last year as a hard hitter. Kassell saw less playing time last year after starting in Tennessee. But their longtime bond helps both, coach Eric Mangini said. "I think the more that guys like each other, the guys enjoy playing with each other, that's always a positive thing," Mangini said of his Lone Star linebackers. It's also helped their families adjust to life in New York. Their wives have become close friends and their children - Kassell has two daughters, Spencer has a son - are close in age. Kassell said the two would have been strong friends even if they never played together in the NFL. But having a teammate who also is a true friend can come in handy. "If you have a bad game, you can kind of clown each other and because we're friends, you don't get --," Kassell said. "You can buoy each others' spirits. It's good to have somebody there who can ... treat you just like when you were a kid and not take everything too seriously." Spencer joked about not really liking Kassell, giggled about their first meeting ("Nothing I'd like to mention in public," he said mischievously) and scoffed at the idea of being roommates. "We couldn't live together," he said. "It'd be too much trouble." The stoic Kassell was more straightforward and serious in addressing his relationship with Spencer. "It's like having a family member [on the team] because he's just like my brother," he said. "I don't make too many friends, so when I really have a friend, well, he's one of the few people I trust in the world." Notes & quotes: The Jets kept eight offensive linemen. They are heavy at cornerback and tight end and could be shopping Andre Dyson or Sean Ryan in a trade for a starting guard. They could be willing to part with Justin Miller, especially considering his off-the-field legal troubles this summer and the development of Chansi Stuckey, Brad Smith and Leon Washington as able returners ... The Patriots will be without Rodney Harrison (suspended) and Richard Seymour (reserve/physically unable to perform list). Sunday Patriots at Jets 1 p.m. TV: Ch. 2 Radio: WEPN (1050)
