It's Not About Being A Dissapointed Fan...
untcampbell replied to ParksAndRecRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Rick, I applaud your voicing what seems to be the obvious, but that which I could not see in my self-focused state. This team of ours asks little from us...they sweat, fight, bleed, break, heal and return to fight again for little in return. No one can argue the value of a free education, but I seriously doubt that what our guys get from this is worth that alone. These are men, far better than most of us, who put themselves up to scrutiny, who give it there best whether we measure it as good enough or not. These men are in the arena...and compete admirably to the finish. We should never make too much of this, but we should willingly give back in equal measure to what they give us. If there was some way to raise a glass (or something of greater value) to these men, on the field, so that they may see that we care and admire and honor and respect....if there was, I would gladly do so. Not sure if it was a challenge or not, but I loved the "NCAA rules prohibit showing a replay of a call being reviewed" slide we showed on the "big" screen. Before the review, the play was shown twice and all 309 of us still left in the stadium saw the error. Seems rare that the stadium attendees get to see the blatant bad call before a play is challenged. GMG

I am not much of a cook, so I cannot practice what I preach...but if you see a ULL fan and are proud of your food, invite him/her to have a taste. I got fed by about 5 different tailgates last year, and turned down that many more from food overload. My favorite conference road trip...UL. GMG

Keith, Each squad has a mascot...I think part of it is schtick, as surely the squad has enough extra bucks to repair some of the outfits that were walking around. Favorites: Gorilla with banana and the fireman. The eagle was totally failed, but had a little fun with Eppy/Scrappy during the game. GMG

BeatNavy, Every post I have read from you has been delivered with class, conviction and character....defining Army and those who attend. I hope we will continue with the privilege it is to play you guys. It is really humbling to be among you and yours. Beat Navy

I had the benefit of attending with my West Point grad brother in law, and also got to see my cousin who is a current 2nd year (can't remember the official name for those guys). Got a great view of the campus that we missed last time I saw NT play at Army, when the campus was covered in snow. Met a guy from CANADA, who tells the great story of visiting FW and wanting to see a high school game. At a random bar in Sundance Square, the guy next to him said, approx 3-4 years ago, "go see Southlake, best team in the state." He went, saw Riley, became a fan, and found NT when Riley's dad was named HC. This CANADIAN, now in Buffalo, is a legitimate hardcore NT fan. Has seen all 3 NT games IN PERSON this year. Rick V met him at an away game a few years back (thought he must be a parent), and honored the story and brought him into the fold.Told me it is easy to follow Alabama and say you are a fan. But he told me he truly enjoys meeting NT fans, hearing and sharing each other's stories, and truly feels a part of the program, though he never went to school here. Goes by "north of 49," I think. Doesn't come on this board but comments on Vito's blog. Cadet's Mayne and McNichol (I think) came up to the NT section and welcomed us. Mayne is a TAMS grad and his brother is still there, both from Coppell. I always feel better about the future of the country when I get to see the numbers of good men and women at a service academy. It is so striking to hear "yes sir" and "yes ma'am" from men and women who have earned our complete and total respect. Fall is beautiful in NY, and I hope we continue this home and home schedule for years to come. My cousin is manager of the women's soccer team....how about a home and away, paired in the same weekend as football, of NT soccer vs Army? My family and I were privileged to attend this game, meet a few fans and more than a few Army fans and cadets. Many times, we heard, "Thank you for coming up to West Point to see the game. Good luck." Good luck, in deed. GMG

Agree 93-98....may have missed a few, but I saw some one-on-one open field tackles that he nailed...two on one series, first and third down, that were textbook. GMG

Dodge, Unt Players Say They Still Have Something Left
untcampbell replied to Brett Vito's topic in Mean Green Football
NC, I was there also...I can't paint the broad brush of the team giving up before the game even started. If so, that says much more about the players than the coaches. I don't care who your "boss" is, you have to take responsibilty for yourself in doing your job. You control what you can control, you give all you have and let the rest take care of itself. THEY may have looked bad there, but I saw GUYS that gave it all, and all the way to the end. I WAS disturbed by a "give up" I saw by a particular individual chasing down an Army player to the north end zone. I was in the south end zone, so I may have missed the reason why but this guy looked like, from my angle, that he was out for a jog way before the play was over. Can't recall the number so I won't disparage without the facts. On the bright side, I met Micah Mosley briefly at our hotel (and his dad again, as well as at ULL last year). Even in a brief introduction, when you see these kids and parents, it is obvious they care. It is clear they have skins in the game. Micah is another outstanding representative of the university...I am proud for him and his family. GMG -
meangreen2018, my wife, daughter and I will be there. 2 alums, the Reeders, and their daughter will join us (they live in NYC). My wife's brother, a West Point grad, and his wife. We are meeting our cousin, a Plebe, on campus. Hope to make it up for parade (anyone know what time it starts?). GMG

Yes...needs a ticket. You can join the club ($15, I think)...gets you a shirt, field access at halftime, ice cream and bounce house in the north end zone of the old practice field. We continue to "tailgate" there, even though our kids are no longer big bounce house fans....they still love the ice cream and it is a good meeting point for anyone with whom we are connecting. GMG

So what is the difference when a defensive lineman does same, actually much more, after a sack? Why isn't celebration called then? GMG -

Thanks Chris...the TEAM deserves better than that also. Really fun to watch the quiet and disappointed fans in SC. GMG

Glad to hear it, Green Guys. Will you guys also be broadcasting from the tailgating areas? GMG

A buddy of mine is trying to research the origin of the term Mean Green, and is questioning the accuracy of the entry below. I know this topic has been discussed on the board before, buy can the NT historians on the board accurately enlighten? GMG http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean_Green#Origin_of_the_name.2C_.E2.80.9CMean_Green.E2.80.9D Origin of the name, “Mean Green” The name “Mean Green,” still in use after 43 years, was adopted by fans and media in 1966 for a North Texas football defensive squad that finished the season second in the nation against the rush.[1] That school year, Joe Greene[2] was sophomore at North Texas, and played left tackle on the football team competed in track and field (shot put). The nickname "Mean Joe Greene" caught-on during his first year with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1969 when the fan base mistakenly assumed that, “Mean Green” (a nickname for defensive squad of his alma mater) was derived from a nickname they thought he had inherited while at North Texas. Nonetheless, the the athletic department, media, and fans loved the novelty of a young standout's surname being a homophone of the university's school color. The first known local media reference to the phrase “Mean Green” appeared in the Denton Record-Chronicle, November 20, 1966, Sect. 3 (Sports), col. 1, pg 1., It Was Perfect: 42 for 42, by Charles Clines. By 1968, “Mean Green” was on the back of shirts, buttons, bumper stickers, and the cover of the North Texas football football brochure. Even the band, in 1968, became identified as the “Mean Green Marching Machine.”[3]

This is the first year in a while that I have not taken the FWST for the six months we call football season because there is no coverage of NT. Even the North Texas Touchdown Run results didn't get posted, as they did in the DMN. I read the DMN daily. I usually read the USA Today, WSJ and online versions of the DRC...I am a newspaper addict. FW is my home town, and the FWST is my hometown newspaper. I deeply love reading about my hometown, but now I only pick it up when it is free (in the Admirals Club or library). If you take the paper, drop it...and tell them why. GMG

Top 10 College running backs in the state of Texas, after the Ranger game. Where will Lance rank? GMG

Don't care what the sport or who we are playing, it is always fun to see an NT blowout! Not sure what the alumni game and this one tells us but it appears we have upgraded the team with this Freshman class, with lots of contribution from the Sophs also. The projected conference finish seems a bit low based on the past history of the program. Nice start, ladies. GMG

Welcome. I got to 4 games last year, and hope to make more this year. What a great group of girls. As an outsider, it appears softball players enjoy playing their sport more than other sports. That makes it fun to watch. Good luck! GMG
