SMU Reportedly Offers Mack Brown $4 million per year
untcampbell replied to Mean Green 93-98's topic in Mean Green Football
Jones got $2 mil/year when that was considered outrageous for SMU (I think we were paying our coach less than $300K at the time). Mack offered $4 mil/year, allegedly. Nice trend. GMG -
Texas will begin to pay players $10,000 per year
untcampbell replied to untjim1995's topic in Mean Green Football
I didn't read through the entire thread but The Fake touched on it early: I predict high school players will sue the NCAA to lift the scholarship cap on grounds that they are being discriminated against by not being allowed on the gravy train. Really curious how the non-rich schools football programs will evolve. And frankly, this will impact every NCAA sport. I think I read this right: Found it interesting that Texas says it has 350 paid employees to serve its athletes. And when each athlete (including Olympic sports) gets its 15K, even Texas will have to cut its employees. Wearing a black arm band. GMG -
Brett Vito Slide raises question: Why isn’t program capitalizing?
untcampbell replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I nominate Silver Eagle for the best post I have read. It IS a culture thing. This coach, who I believe may be the best since I have been here (I got here in Fall 1980), sees pretty much the same thing the other 25 or 30 coaches I have seen since 1980. We are a teachers school morphed into a music school that turned into a commuter school. It is not in the nature of teachers, musicians or commuters to DEMAND excellence from athletics. Demanding athletic excellence happens at schools with land grant oil fields, prominent business and law schools and inherently richest-of-the-rich entitled alumni. This is the culture and mindset that our athletic department was built upon. I never thought about it before SE put it so eloquently, but we often simply check off the boxes to provide our students the "college experience." I love Saturdays and "winning" the tailgate (allegedly) as much as the next guy. I get together with guys who live across the street, down the street, two blocks away and one county over six times a year (spare the repetition UNT90....5 games next year) that, without football, probably wouldn't happen. But culturally, there are a few hundred that care sitting amongst a few thousand that are there when the weather is nice. I would like NT to reconvene the "committee that cares" to figure out what can be done to turn this ship around. GMG -

McCarney’s candid remarks about the situation at UNT
untcampbell replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Always nice to see the rational discussion emerge from the emotional response. Thanks SE and others. Coach abandons coach speak for a few minutes and he gets skewered. The contrasts in how this (my) University's leadership developed an athletic program and how other schools valued the ability of athletics to showcase its school are historic. North Texas was a teachers college that evolved into a music school that transitioned into a commuters college. We are past that now. This is a legitimate university with diverse programs, goals and expectations. Athletics is on a long path towards to legitimacy. The last President or two allowed those doors to be pushed open, and this President may be the most supportive, visible and engaged. And the Coach took a few minutes to shed some light on life in the North Texas football program and gets trashed. I said it when I heard it post-game: I have never heard the coach as ashamed and embarrassed...so much so that he abandoned coach speak, revealing a guy that was hit right in the gut, not hiding, not quitting. I think, I hope, this loss disgusted the rest of the team as much as it did Coach. GMG -

Best interview I have heard from McCarney. Not exact quotes, but here are some tidbits. (Should have put quotes around the title of this thread...Coach McCarney quote) I apologize to our fans. Really bad excuse for Mean Green football. DW had a great week in practice. Looked like an 8th grader trying to play 9th grade football for the first time. Every coach and player has to do better. Players are a reflection of our ability to coach. Want our fans to be proud next Saturday, not embarrassed like today. Laramie not serious. Sore. I can't go today. We looked like a jr high defense today. Nothing in my gut says good job today, but Jimmy played well. I am embarrassed. Question: how tough are you? Will you accept what happened today or be motivated by it. GMG

McCarney: UNT won’t pull redshirts off East Texas WRs

McCarney: UNT won’t pull redshirts off East Texas WRs
untcampbell replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
We can win this game. Let me try my hand at coach speak for a minute: It will be decided on who makes the fewest mistakes, capitalizes on opportunities and controls the ball....like most games. Need everyone playing their best and with intensity. Key stat: we aren't coming off a bye week. GMG -
McCarney: UNT won’t pull redshirts off East Texas WRs
untcampbell replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I would argue the momentum from last season was gone after the Texas game. Back to earth....and reality. The "momentum" was really one game in January of 2014. It was great for the program, and it did not go away. I will enjoy that win for many years to come. We will get it back the next time we get into a bowl game that a lot of people can attend, whether that is this year or next. We have a bunch of folks (not fans, really) that will never see a game at Apogee, never look at a message board, don't give to the program, pull for Texa$ or A$M or whoever is winning that year and don't own a North Texas t-shirt. I smiled broadly when they showed up in Dallas. Whether they intended it or not, they helped us look like a program with some fans and likely helped us pull out a win. When we win consistently, they may prove me wrong and make it back to Denton. I think Coach thinks he can win with this team, and is willing to go with his guys win or lose. Bright side: if we win this year, we will be even better next year. I don't see another 10 year bowl drought ahead. In the mean time, any time we can get an extra year for our kids is good for the program and I am happy we will have, among others, the Carthage men, Dajon and CMeans for five years. GMG -

Good non-move. TE's will be increasingly a part of the offense, and that isn't a bad thing. GMG -
The ladies won two this weekend with this hanging over them (not exactly sure when the team learned about the accident). Prayers and condolences. GMG

#DefenseU This team hasn't given up a goal in conference play. Goalie Jackie Kerestine and the defense have 9 shutouts of their 10 wins on the year. Of the six goals given up (in 13 games), 2 have come in overtime. Very good team over on Bonnie Brae. Support! GMG

North Texas faces extra obstacle in Noah Joseph
untcampbell replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
They have Joseph. We had a week off and got to watch the Maryland game live. They have one half of tape watching our first team offense (and that "mirage" apparently doesn't count). We have 4 games. That they are playing at home and the Missouri win is no longer clogging their brainpan are probably IU's biggest intangible advantages. GMG -
I thought the piece with Michael and Corbin was awesome. Tearjerker, really. Love the smile on the faces of those kids, and the interactions the players and coaches had with both. James Jones is a good dude! And their parents represented well the battle their sons and their families face daily. I invite you to join me in donating $77 (one dollar for each point NT scored vs. Nicholls) to http://coachtocuremd.org/. Heck, I am going to round it to $80 and cover Nicholls points also! GMG

Passionate but rational Mizzou friend of mine, married to an IU grad, told me that the IU loss was more about Mizzou playing historically bad football. Still, it is a boost of credibility for IU and would enhance the value of a NT win. Should be a great game next week! GMG

First free weekend in awhile. What are yall going to do?

North Texas Cross Country Ken Garland Invitational on Saturday morning, followed by the Community 5K on the same course. A margarita afterwards would be nice. GMG -
I guess I was more amazed that 77 points can be scored with less than 20 minutes of offense....obviously we scored often with out the offense being involved. Last year and against SMU this year, I couldn't wait to see what our defense did. Last year, that wasn't a knock on our offense as much as what our defense/special teams could do. I greatly anticipated every play of the game against Nicholls. Just a joy to watch from opening kickoff to final cannon. GMG

Old Dominion, North Texas made Conference USA history on Saturday

The FG opportunity: Last play of the first half. NT called a timeout with 3 seconds left and the ball was around the 20-yard line. GMG
