  1. The following was compiled by Reverend Kyev Tatum, a 1987 Letterman. Athletic Department continues to differentiate from past regimes. Really making an effort to re-connect with the Letterman. GMG Legendary Football Player and Coach Ron Shanklin was our receivers coach at the University of North Texas. This Saturday he and other members of 1967 and 1987 teams will be honored, including his teammate Joe Greene. Three members of the 1987 team currently serve on the Arlington Police Department, Marcus Camper, Thomas Green and David McGinity, the current deputy chief of police. Please join us and feel free to share your favorite UNT story during the week leading up to this historic weekend of champions at the University of North Texas. A Bright Green Light to Greatness. SOARING STRONG - Calling All My 1987 University of North Texas Mean Green Eagle Football Teammates. It's Been 30 years. September 23, 2017, Denton, Texas. Champions Weekend To Honor UNT Legends Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony To Highlight Events The 1987 team, coached by Corky Nelson, finished 7-5 with a 5-1 record in the Southland Conference and qualified for the postseason playoffs. North Texas earned a final ranking of No. 16 in the Div. I-AA poll before losing to No. 3 Northeast Louisiana (Louisiana-Monroe) in the playoffs. There were 13 players on the 1987 team that earned first or second team all-conference, including freshman offensive lineman Scott Bowles, who earned All-America honors in 1990 and was later inducted into the North Texas Athletics Hall of Fame and elected to the North Texas All-Century Team. 2. Making sure I got this right: NT is out-recruited by SMU for years. Fine got all of his yards against their 2nd and 3rd teamers. Those second and third teamers are all 3 star athletes, or at least higher ranked 2 stars than our guys, waiting their turn. Yes? Fine disappeared for two quarters, right? My memory sucks but I recall a few rally killers that contributed to Fine's alleged disappearance. Ill-advised trick plays and muffed punts (Fine wasn't in the game for that punt or the reverse on kick off), an outmanned matchup or two on the offensive line, penalties that stopped drives or gave up points. Fair balance: I am sure Mason would like to take back the interceptions, true. Mason Fine is a good quarterback, composed and accurate. Good character guy too. I am pulling for him. GMG
  3. I don't see it as disrespectful. I see it as opportunity....if I had a bookie or lived in Vegas. Teams are disrespected until they earn respect. There is no reason to be less than 12 at this point. We lost by 13 at home last year. I think we are better than last year, and so does this line. Earn it. GMG
  4. A friend of mine, a Letterman who will be at the season opener, asked if I knew anything about Mason Fine. I sent this as a primer. This has been on the board before, but you might enjoy it if you haven't seen it. And if you have, it might be fun to take a second look. The Locust Grove Pirates took down the Salina Wildcats 26-25 in both teams season opener on Thursday. You might see a Locust Grove contingent on the first few rows of Section 110 tonight, if they do as they did last season. http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=mason+and+jason+video+tulsa+world&view=detail&mid=F50EF790F6B24BAAF39FF50EF790F6B24BAAF39F&FORM=VIRE GMG
  5. Back up plan: show an ID. No voting required. GMG
  6. I will go to an old favorite: My time with the kids has passed but I would like to see fans get field access again after the game. We did more bonding with fans, those we knew and those we didn't, on the field after the games than anywhere. Football games break out, kids try to kick field goals or play in the ice left on the field by the trainers. There is the chance to meet a player (this is a game changer for a kid), find a chin strap or some other piece of equipment that is the coolest post-game souvenir to a young one. Parents meet and chat (we met the Dunham's that way). Celebrations occasionally occur, fan/player celebrations. On-field access for the JMG Club before the game and at half would change that experience completely. I don't know if players get anything from it (they should), but an on-field high five between child and fully padded football player before the game gets the kids into the game in a unique way. It's an old story, but my then 9-year old son interviewed Jamario Thomas on the field after a game for his school newspaper. Same son is now a Senior at North Texas. He is an n of 1 but he never considered another school because of the imprinting experienced on Saturday's at Fouts Field. Athletics: the most visible opportunity to sell a school to the vast majority of people. ALWAYS BE SELLING. GMG
  7. http://zipsnation.org/forums/topic/37651-2017-camp-thread/?page=1 The son of a friend of mine is playing at Akron (QB #10). Just for fun, you might take a look at this camp thread. Amazingly similar to this board, i.e. complaints about the lack of coverage, about he who covers the team, shots at coaches and players, etc. Lots of other time waste here but I appreciate the quality of our board a bit more after going to this one. GMG
  8. There is a cost that is reflected in these numbers every single time the athletic department does something for free for its fans. Its titled investment in the business world. The current regime is investing quite a bit in us. It is also beefing up staffing, and that is reflected here. There is an inherent value in the perception of the program that is not yet reflected in increased investors. I am confident wins by the department's teams will continue to improve from here. But, as an example, the Mean Green Mania event cost a lot in free food, more professional swag, a ticket packet that hit it out of the park. This outsider was impressed, and as my discretionary income changes more to the positive (two kids in college this year), I will be tempted to put a bit more in the pot. GMG
  9. I transferred to NT from Univ of Texas a long time ago. Never enjoyed UT and decided to dig in deep when I got to North Texas. Not sure where you came from but it sounds like you won't have any problem being engaged because you WANT to be engaged. This may sound like a put down of the school, but it is not a reach to say you have a chance to be a big fish in a small pond here. The student section, with a few exceptions, does its part at the games. Be involved, stay involved after you graduate. The alumni/local side needs it. I looked for opportunities to get on the field, go to away games and be an "exceptional" fan. Loyal, loud, proud. Get there early, stay late win or lose. Talk about your university like you are an Aggie. Talk up the place. It increases the value of your degree. Get some kettle corn, and a second bag for the road (unpaid promotion). Basketball will be better now...you have a chance to be heard in that venue. Yell. The Olympic sports are fun. See at least one soccer, volleyball, women's hoops and softball game each year, more of all preferred. Run in the The 2017 North Texas Cross Country 5k (Community Race) on September 16. Register by August 31 to guarantee your shirt. Get there by 8:30 to see the Men's 4-mile and Women's 5k. http://www.meangreensports.com/sports/c-xc/spec-rel/home-meet-info.html Down the corridor of years, we'll drink lots and lots of beers. GMG
  10. I don't know Emmitt as well as I would like, but I do know this: It is awesome to see the career progression of one of our own. That the career is in law enforcement makes it better. That the new role will be focused on leadership is even better. Emmitt is a leader, a leader his men and women will respect, follow and serve in a way that will honor the position and Emmitt. I am very happy for you Emmitt and know you will do the kind of job that will attract the interest of other, perhaps larger departments soon. GMG
  11. Related to Houston? Only other McTear I have come across. That would explain some athleticism. GMG
  12. Any school that has Texas in its name should include Texas when you call it by its name. North Texas sounds better than North (insert 49 other states here). Proud of my school and my state. GMG
  13. Gave my buddy's son the most attention through the recruiting process of any of the coaches. Good guy, by all accounts. GMG
  14. Robbie Kelley: Akron gave him a scholarship. GMG
  15. We are in the conference the current state of athletics, both our department and college athletics collectively, allows. Not bad for where we are as an athletic department. It would be interesting to compare this poll to a CUSA fan poll asking if NT was a good add to the conference. In our current state, we bring a few things: location, guaranteed hoop wins (past tense) and competitive Olympic sports, etc. Overall, I think we were good for the conference and it was good for us. Aspiring to be elsewhere is good. Earn it. GMG
  16. I secured participation permissions last night from the boss. I will play but I share your purported challenged Corn Hole skill sets. GMG
  17. Congrats Coach B! If you are lucky, You will be remembered for this more than anything you accomplish otherwise. GMG
  18. Last year was the sure bet. That said, I will effort to put a couple of bucks on NT and the over. GMG
  19. Let me be the first to ask: T'shirt? Seriously, thanks Mark for taking this project forward. I will discuss with the Boss my availability but plan to support either way. GMG
  20. Maybe we can compromise: Complain all you want...it's what we do here. It's almost all we do here. Don't derail a recruit's thread in doing so. It's what we shouldn't do here. GMG
  21. I don't have a program....could you loan me yours? BTW, I was on the 45 yard line, student side. Freshman at UT. Got to North Texas as fast as I could. GMG
  22. Lots of Twitter activity last night propping the first ever UNT Athletics awards event. Zach Orr commented this had been discussed while he was at NT and he was glad to see it got done. Props to Mr. Wren and/or the entire ADept for recognizing Athletes/Athletics collectively. Some awards I saw posted: Highest Team GPA Fall: Volleyball Highest Team GPA Spring: Tennis Student Manager of the Year: Destiny Thomas Male Newcomer: Mason Fine Female Newcomer: Terriell Bradley Individual Performance: Maria Kononova Team Performance: Softball vs. Baylor Inspirational Athlete: Candice Adams Make A Difference: Victoria Junious Male Student Athlete: Cory Churchman Female Student Athlete: Maria Kononova GMG
  23. "Is it me, or should all OL coaches be throw back, hard nosed men?" As should the OL they are coaching. BTG should be a year round program, give some spotlight to the other sports also. Just as the NFL has become a year round enterprise, we need to market North Texas football year round. Social media does some of that work. A designated once a month "event" during the off season, including conference call "shareholder" meetings with the Mean Green club (after Spring Ball and before the season starts maybe), the football banquet (January), Coaches Caravan (May), etc.
