I am going because this is the team I chose to invest all of my emotional sports energy. Wins, losses, good games, bad games....they all have a profound impact on how much I enjoy the week following. Sunday church and my family take my attention away from this team for a while, but I always come back, mood on board. I am interested to see how Fine finishes, but I feel that way about the entire team. No matter the contribution, each Senior sweated, grinded, lifted, did double work as a student athlete and donned the helmet. I want the collective effort of this team to celebrate those that are on their way out with whatever it takes to beat UAB. UAB is not a juggernaut. We should prepare, focus, expect and effort to win. I get about six opportunities per year to tailgate with my buddies. I will be there for that. I will take home 3 bags of Poppy’s, hoping it will get me through until September (they will be gone in about a week, because my family shares my Poppy’s joy). But I don’t miss NT football home games. Period. (on the other hand, my last six away games have been ODU, Utah State, $MU, Cal, Charlotte and Rice...so maybe the team doesn’t need me on the road). GMG

For those watching on TV, how could the Fine pass to Lawrence in that last drive not have been pass interference? The two holding penalties on that drive were too much to overcome. GMG

THAT....was awesome. Since players move all the time, I can pull for teams I used to abhor (until the player moves or is moved to the next team). For now, go Jeff Wilson's 49ers. GMG

We were able to get through the first half tied. Then we got the wind. Felt like we came out in the second half determined to win it, like the Rice game. Half time adjustments! GMG

My recall is he pretty much opened the season with a long kickoff return. Then it seems like he went 5 games where he wasn’t back for KO’s. But pretty much every time he gets the kick, the return is huge. What happened that he wasn’t in the games for some period up front? Or is my memory kaput? GMG

My team. I will take every Saturday I can. But I admit I have more fun when more people are there having fun with me (except for the traditional, once-a-year 3500 game where we typically way over-perform). GMG

I subscribed last week, BV. We moved back to Denton after being gone for 25 years. I like how the DRC aggregates the local news, sports, business and entertainment into one place. It is a quick read and I learn more about my city there than from twitter or any other online source. I also am old school, in that I like to hold the newspaper and scan each page for stories and ads that interest me. The cost of the DRC is reasonable and provides value for the entertainment it provides. Yes, there are things I don't like about the DRC. They do not detract from what I enjoy about the paper. GMG

My fault boys. It's on me. Talking to Mean Green Matt early in the game, when there was no reason to do so, I threw out a flippant afterthought regarding our early lead (I believe) that this team has a way of helping programs that have no reason to feel good about themselves, feel good themselves. I was thinking ODU when I said it but MGM channeled his inner drex and brought up Kansas State. GMG

I will be the one wearing Green, though I don't have any green rain gear if it is raining. Running a half marathon in the mud up in Greensboro in the morning, and heading to the game. See you there. GMG

Conversely, some of our best games have been in empty stadiums. Lance Dunbar's last game against Middle comes to mind. Please advise: Should we pray for rain and cold the rest of the year? I could only fill 4 of my 8 seats. Sickness, parents punishing their kids for bad behavior (so the entire family cancels), regulars out of town for work commitments made it so. Lots of sold seats are unused every game. But I agree, the stadium has never been fuller. GMG

Twitter, so take it for what that is worth: Apparently a pipe broke in the UTSA post-game locker room and the room was showered with "stink" water. Conflicting reports as to if it was a sewage or water pipe, but players in towels were reportedly seen outside the locker room. A player commented this was just about how the season has gone so far. GMG

Can't remember John Lott's number but I would guess that is him in the picture on the bottom right. Was an offensive lineman here, and is a great strength coach, now with the Chargers. GMG

I'll scattershoot a bit also: Cal fans were appreciative of our fans coming out to Cali. Many expressed dismay we would come all the way from Flyover to see this game. It was a nice opportunity to talk to them about what we do at NT, and about Texas. I was surprised, as was referenced above, that a number of fans were fully aware of the sad demise of the great city of San Francisco. And they aren't happy about it, no matter the political side they are on. I met more conservatives than I expected. One nice lab rat guy gave Dr. Houdek, Judge Holland, my family and others a quick tour of the things he liked about his campus: a fountain dedicated to a homeless dog that used to come around campus at certain times of day knowing he would be well fed; the free speech monument he showed us. Apparently, it and the space above it are considered sovereign. A circle of refuge. He told my wife that he is a conservative and it was great to chat with others without concern of pissing off anyone for no good reason. He told us if he ever gets chased by cops, he is going to stand in the circle. But he is a Conservative, so there really won't be much reason to be chased by cops. https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/free-speech-monument I took my wife to Sonoma and Napa, and my wife and son to Yosemite during the week. I then hated the first quarter, loved most of the rest of the game, informed Mason Fine's sister (?), girlfriend (?), aunt (?) of the TD that broke the NT record for touchdown passes, toasted my Laphroaig to the team to start and end the game (and a bit in between), sat with Mean Green Matt by happenstance, with whom I sat by happenstance at the NM Bowl, kissed my bride and hugged my son on a couple of sweet 2H touchdowns and enjoyed a beautiful day for football. I enjoyed some decent BBQ near the SJC airport hotel for dinner and then flew home Sunday morning. Oh yeah....when I went to get my car from the hotel parking garage at 5:45 am Sunday morning, I found my rental car (and others) had been broken in to, rear window and front passenger window smashed, my son's dirty laundry scattered about but nothing else the bastard could steal. And he left the Be Calm and Go Mean Green shirt. Ah, the true California experience. GMG

I am a fan of, and pulling for, Dion, the Novil family, his girlfriend and family, his "little brother" and family, Wylie, Abilene, Marty B's and the Mean Green. Great people, inspiring story. GMG

...beats Texas Southern 5-0. Through two games against outclassed competition, the defense has not allowed a shot on goal. NT getting the newbies lots of playing time, and they are contributing. The ladies are gearing up for two Top 25 games on the road, Texas Tech and Memphis first week in September. Next game: Friday night, August 30 vs Houston Baptist. Good way to start your tailgate overnight. GMG
