North Texan Magazine - Soccer Alumni (Kelsey Perlman)
UNTDude posted a topic in Mean Green Athletics
Great Article in the new issue of the North Texan Alumi Magazine about last years soccer captain Kelsey Perlman. Really shows how a great university, university programs and UNT athletics can pave a way to success! Link: http://issuu.com/uni...thtexanfall2012 or http://northtexan.unt.edu/content/diplomacy-specialist Diplomacy Specialist The U.S. Embassy in Paris had the perfect job for Kelsey Perlman ('12). The embassy was looking for a French-speaking female athlete to serve as a sports diplomacy specialist — a job that required touring the country to promote gender equality and the benefits of sports for professional success. Perlman, who majored in international studies and French and served as captain of the Mean Green women's soccer team, heard about the job from Laetitia Knight, lecturer in world languages, literatures and cultures at UNT. "I'd like to say that I think this job was made for me," Perlman says. Besides playing soccer with various clubs, Perlman talks to boys and girls about the benefits of Title IX, the landmark bill that made discrimination illegal in education and federal programs; the U.S. collegiate athletics system; and how soccer is used as a form of social integration in tough neighborhoods. She also talks about qualities — like leadership, organization, mental toughness, assertiveness and perseverance — that she developed by playing sports. Perlman says the task can be challenging because there hasn't traditionally been strong support for women's sports in France, but she loves the job. "Seeing girls come up to me saying they were inches away from quitting sports but would continue thanks to my speech had a tremendous impact on me," she says. Perlman would like to play for a professional soccer team in France and continue the sports diplomacy program. She also plans to take the Foreign Service Exam, which would put her en route to becoming a diplomat. She notes that her athletic scholarship at UNT paved the way to her job because it allowed her to take unpaid internships with the International Rescue Committee, Office of Sustainability and the North Texas in D.C. Program, and study for a semester abroad at the University of Caen in France. "I would never be in the position I am now," she says, "if I didn't go to UNT." -
After two nice TV showings...If I'm a recruit or potential transfer I like the direction this program is going. Really nice seeing the Mean Grean with marketable progress. GMG

We maintained #9 rank in the south region (Week of September 11). We played very strong competition thus the continued ranking. We need at least a split over the weekend to stay in the top ten. Two more tough games with TCU and OK State. Link: http://www.nscaa.com/rankings/1176/NCAADivisionI/women/South/Poll4?preview=5ebeb6065f64f2346dbb00ab789cf001

What makes the loss all the more heartbreaking is that the game winning goal occured on a missed off off-side call. The LBSU head coach expressed to Hedlund after the game that his player was off.....but that's soccer. Great showing this week against two very good soccer teams....Soccer is hands down most consistant, winning athletic program in UNT history!!

Good Stuff Matt - Quick correction, OSU is in Stillwater....just don want anyone driving 3 hours in the wrong direction ....

4 teams will be in College Station. TAMU, LBSU, Central Michigan & Mean Green. Central MI will be playing TAMU & Texas State. The TAMU vs. LBSU will be the Fox Game of the week on Friday. Hopefully it's hot and humid (CA teams struggle in our normal weather!) and TAMU wear them down on Friday night!

Congrats to Mean Green soccer being ranked #9 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women's - South - Poll 2 - August 28, 2012 Link: http://www.nscaa.com...dbb00ab789cf001 UNT is ranked in the South region as opposed to most other Texas schools (central region), because of conference affiliation. Full regional rankings Link: http://www.nscaa.com.../2012-august-28 Great start for Coach Hedlund and this young team!

I'm also going to the Allen vs. Southlake game...should be electric! Living in Allen I went to the stadium's open house and like Apogee is a tier one stadium at any level. When you have a high school where the number of students approach the undergraduate admissions of Wake Forest and SMU, winning tradition, and have the support of 85,000 residents it's pretty easy to see why folks are lining up for tickets.....

Top 25 Unusual College Football Team Nicknames
UNTDude replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
I can't believe they left off the Williams College - Purple Cows, Pittsurg State - Gorillas, and the Upper Iowa University - Peacocks! -
Nice weekend for Mean Green Soccer, this is a young team that should get even better by the time conference matches come around. Hedlund just keeps the wins rolling!

Conference USA is a level above the Sunbelt based on the number of teams that traditionally get invites to the NCAA tournament. There are many years when CUSA will field two teams to the dance. I don't believe the Sunbelt has ever fielded more than one team, the conference tournament champion. Memphis, SMU, Colorado College and UCF all have had traditionally good programs. All but a few teams have had success one year or another (balanced conference) . 8 of the 12 teams had winning records last year.. That being said UNT will immediately compete in the upper level of the new conference a could potentially win a conference championship their first year. In 2013, Memphis their traditional power house will be moving to the Big East along with two very good programs in SMU and UCF. Note: They beat Houston & SMU ( the third best team in CUSA) last year. UNT traditionally will compete and more often win verse larger confernce teams including the Big 12.. In recent years they have included victories verse teams like (TCU, SMU, Oklahoma, TX Tech, Iowa State, Baylor) and competitive matches verse teams like Ohio State and TX A&M. In a nutshell the soccer was probably ready to make the jump to a larger conference 10 years ago.....

Big Time D1 Schedule!!.....and after the loss of a large and successful senior class. (only lost 1 home conference game in 4 years!), it's most certainly considered a rebuilding year. That being said, Hedlund has a large talented freshman class coming in (of which quite a few may contribute early), but he also picked up two high profile transfers, (Amanda Burgardt - SMU & Lynda Hercules - BYU), who should step in and contribute immediately. My bet, the soccer program won't miss a beat.... GMG

My take is that when C-USA is looking at the large media markets (specifically DFW), it's much more about C-USA and much less about UNT. UNT just opens the door for C-USA to promote it's brand in one of the top 5 media market. The conference and networks are just as concerned with how many folks will watch a Rice verse UTEP game as they are a UNT verse team X. The 6.5 million DFW market is loaded with alumni that expand well beyond UNT including a significant number with C-USA affilitation. You really think they added UTSA and Charlotte for their mature athletic programs?.... Sorry coach Farmer if you were closer to a large media market you may well have been invited to the dance..

I can understand the disappointment of loosing their natural rival SMU. On the other hand there is no doubt Lane Rawlins is thrilled with the effects of recent conference realignments.
