DENTON, Texas (3/24/08) – After hitting four home runs last week, North Texas sophomore Rebecca Waters was named the Sun Belt Conference's Softball Player of the Week, announced the league office on Monday. The Mean Green went 4-1 last week with wins against Texas Tech, UTSA and Florida Atlantic. Waters continued her hot hitting this past week with four home runs in five games, including two against conference opponent Florida Atlantic. She has hit all of her six home runs in the last eight games. The second baseman hit a grand slam in the team's 9-4 win against UTSA and capped the team's seven-run second inning. The bases-loaded home run was only the second grand slam in Mean Green softball history. She started the week with a home run against Texas Tech, giving the Mean Green an early 1-0 lead. Against FAU, she ended the game with a solo home run in the sixth inning, giving the Mean Green a 9-1 run-rule victory. She put North Texas ahead, 1-0, with her sixth home run of the season in the 5-0 win against the Owls. Waters hit .467 this week with a slugging percentage of 1.333. She knocked in seven runs and five of her seven hits last week were for extra bases. Her double in the eighth inning of the 1-0 loss to FAU was just inches shy of going out of the park. It hit the fence and fell back into the field for a double. Overall, she is third on the team with a .345 hitting percentage and is tied for the team lead with six homers.North Texas (15-17) is off to its best start in school history and returns to action on Wednesday, March 26 when it faces UTA on the road in a doubleheader at 5 pm.
