A look at 6 potential candidates for UNT's vacancy
Cr1028 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
You want 2? -
Sorry, I was confused, I thought you were saying a high school qb coach would be our choice for head coach.
-
+1, I don't know why so many around here don't think this stuff is funny. I find it well placed and hilarious.
-
OK first list was too young -- how about these?
Cr1028 replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Of those listed. I'd go with Mario Cristobal. Two stated later, Mangino and Orgeron are also interesting to me. -
Who would you have hired? Are you any better than RV?

This burned June Jones big time. -

That is a fair assessment Emmitt. The question is, should the city manager be fired as well for hiring you in the first place? -

I can't argue against any of the points you made. All I can argue is that picking a coach isn't as easy as just "picking the right coach". Maybe he deserves to go for all the reasons you stated but I don't think the football program's failure this year should be the reason. He did what needed to be done and fired the head coach. -
This makes me VERY happy Harry. Thank you for sharing. Wow, I've been up too long. I very nearly put thank you for sharting. haha whoops

You mean predict the future? Deloss Dodds made more than double that and he hired both McWilliams and Mackovic. He finally found the right ingredient with Mack Brown. This isn't an exact science you know. -
You can skip the following paragraph if you like and just answer the question at the bottom. There are a lot of FIRE RV threads around here due solely to his failure to hire consistently successful head coaches. My question to our members here is, "What would you have done differently?". It isn't always easy to find the right person for the job. We hired a guy at my work a little over a year ago and my bosses have been majorly disappointed with him. His interview went fine but if they'd have known he'd be this bad, they would've never hired the guy. I looked back at my old posts and know I would've pretty much hired the same guys RV did for football so I'd have been fired myself I guess. I was over the moon when he took a chance on Dodge. All indications are that he made that hire on his own. After the fallout from that hire, he went and paid $40k to consultant Chuck Neinas to help choose a coach. This one even had the Hayden Fry seal of approval. I don't know what he could've done differently other than predict the future and if he could do that he sure as hell wouldn't be working for us. I originally wanted Canales until we gave up 49 points to Monroe, then I wanted a defensive coach and Mac was the candidate that fit the criteria. I also thought it'd be great if we could keep Canales as OC and we did. I've gotten everything I've ever wanted in a football head coach from RV, the hires just didn't work out. SO, the question is, of the legitimate candidates that we had in '06 and '10, who would you've hired instead and how has their career progressed since that missed hire?? Please refrain from the Leach and Harbaugh suggestions because those were never going to happen and if you're honest with yourself, you know that.

Are the minus 1s because you guys couldn't tell he was joking or that you didn't think the joke was funny? I'm curious. I doubt he actually feels that way.

1 reception for 3 yards against Southern Miss

Remember, we were on QBs 3 and 4 for games 3-12. Riley had been moved to WR because of nerve damage in his arm and we all know Chase Baine's situation. We lost several close games and had 14 starters out to injury. Let's reserve judgment until at least Friday, shall we? The 2010 team was not as bad as their record.

I think you are getting ahead of yourself here. Nobody wants to make Canales the HC right now but some (including me) say that if he wins most of the 7 games he coaches this season, he should at least get a look. But let's be honest with ourselves, the chance of that happening is about as likely as Hayden Fry coming out of retirement to coach us again. -
Question, and would love to know the answer.

Hugh Freeze was OC when he replaced the fired Steve Roberts at Arkansas State. Now Freeze is HC at Ole Miss. -

With what we've seen over the last few weeks and sitting at 0-5 with 5-1 WKU, 5-1 Marshall, 1-5 UTSA, 4-2 LaTech, 3-3 Tenn, 2-4 MTSU, and 2-4 UTEP left on the schedule. We've lost to 1-5 SMU(by 18), 3-3 Rice(by 14), 6-0 Iowa(by 46), 3-3 SoMiss(by 35), and 4-1 Portland(by59) by a combined 246 points (49.2 per game). We have not only been beaten, we haven't even been competitive. We lost by 2 TDs in our closest game. If he beats UTSA, MTSU, and UTEP, I'd sure appreciate it but that wouldn't enough to win any awards. However, if he were to beat 4-2 LaTech(who lost by 3 to WKU and 6 to Kansas State), 5-1 WKU, 5-1 Marshall, or the other UT? He would definitely deserve an award because the team that would've been out there under Mac would've lost by 6TDs to any one of those 4. -
Maybe Mac was doing some scouting and recruiting for his boy Ferentz. wow, that is appalling

I don't completely agree with this. I watched the video feed from home and during one timeout I saw Kevin Patrick and Marcus Smith very hyped up trying to reach the guys huddling near the sideline but it obviously did no good. -
Why are you guys so opposed to Chico and his hard-work "lock the gate" philosophy? You ready to go back to the IOWA times already???
-
The red wolves and hilltoppers have been making pretty good hires for awhile too. Hugh Freeze was the OC when Steve Roberts got fired from Arkansas State. He turned out pretty good.
-
If they don't look in the Denton paper, it might not be too hard. Here in Austin, I've only seen us on the sports segment three times. Once for Todd Dodge getting canned, last year when we played UT, and last night. They didn't even mention us with the other 3 or 4 bowls on 1-1-14. Only time we get mentioned here is for something negative.

It's Official Chico named Interim Head Coach
Cr1028 replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
I like where your thinking lies but if Canales is coaching for his next job, (wherever that may be) I don't think he will be in any sort of rebuilding/prepare for the future mode. He will be trying to be competitive this season to get looks for head coach or coordinator positions at other programs. I just hope we look respectable and the players look like they actually care going forward. They clearly did not care last night. -

Actually, Mini and Greer would've both been injured by now, Smith would be the one taken off on a stretcher in the last game of the season and Means would come in except Smith and Means would be converted WRs. We didn't carry 9 quarterbacks back then because we had decent ones.
