The guy coaching the team. He does a poor job, he gets fired. Simple as that. We just have $2.1 million extra dollars laying around the athletic department? I doubt that very seriously. Of course they had to go to the donors to get the cash to buy Mac out.
-
I'm saying his first football hire wasn't prepared for the college game. He was a gamble that just didn't work out. His second hire brought us our first bowl win and 9-win season in a decade. RV couldn't have known the Mac was going to use the team to put his personal relationships above the good of the program. Mac's tenure wasn't a complete failure, the bowl win season and his willingness to fire Mac in the first half of the season should be enough to give RV some grace.
-
A true Mean Green fan would support the program regardless of who is fortunate enough to hire the head coaches. You don't know that the news of him getting fired was a failure on RV's part. It may've been leaked by a donor putting up the cash to buyout Mac's contract. None of us truly know.
-
For the record, the man leading the team for that loss was fired immediately after the game as he should've. To my knowledge, RV doesn't coach football.

Buy me a coach

66-7 was a bunch of warm bodies in uniforms. Very few gave effort and that is clear. The team that played WKU last week COULD hang with GSU. McCarney is done and you will see a vastly improved team over the next six weeks now that the restraints have been removed.
-
I doubt these conversations would ever happen. The first is possible. The other one would never happen. TAMU doesn't give a crap about us unless we are playing them that week. TCU only cares when it affects their program or SMU's.
-
I was watching the livestream while in the GMG chat room. I was disgusted and said Mac HAD to go. RV never crossed my mind. This season's failure was ALL on Mac and his nepotism.
-
I don't care if it is 2081, we aren't a P5 program or even a G5 program with P5 money yet. Houston is paying almost double McCarney's salary to Herman and SMU is paying Morris almost triple Mac's $725k. These guys were OCs at top P5 programs and those two schools paid a premium to go get those guys. We've been perpetually trying to find a diamond in the rough because we've been unwilling to pay for a polished one. Why don't you send that "fire rv" money and everything else we can muster and say go get the best guy available instead of go get the best guy that we can get for a mid-pack conference salary.

ULL is sitting at 2-4 while paying their hfc $1M/yr after beating 1-5 FCS Northwestern State and 1-4 Texas State. ULM sits at 1-5 after only beating FCS Nicholls(you remember them right?). Georgia Southern sits at 5-2 after beating 3-3 Western Michigan, 4-2 FCS The Citadel, 2-4 Idaho, and 0-6 NMSU. Fritz keeps padding that resume beating up on cupcakes. Arkansas State sits at 4-3 with wins over the aforementioned ULL and Idaho, 1-5 FCS Mizzou State, and 3-3 South Alabama. I guess you're right, these guys have beaten some real juggernauts. Maybe we could go back to the Sun Belt and be competitive. The worst team in our history that we are fielding this season could go and beat both ULL and ULM right now. GSU and ASU could go either way. We are capable of beating them too. You guys must've forgotten how weak the Sun Belt is. It was a lot more than that banner that pushed out Patterson. He pissed of the coaches in ALL sports, not just the big 3, he upset faculty, he angered the general fanbase, he angered Joe Jamail, He basically angered everyone associated with the program right down to giving Bevo cancer. EVERYBODY hated that guy. RV is nowhere near as bad as Patterson and if you think he is, you haven't been well-informed on Patterson's tenure.
-
How can you say the two underlined apply to RV? Those show a lack of control, not just poor hiring practices.
-
That may be true but for the seasons I referenced, USU went 4-19. Whoever -1'd me must've forgotten or not been around for the whopping 272 yards of total offense and 14.3 points per game we put up in '05 or the 232 yards and 12.8 points per game we put up in '06.

Going against the grain here. NT 38 Huntington Bad Boys 28

Thanks. Nicely laid out. And to your last sentence, if Boise had been in our conference in 2001, Dickey wouldn't have been around to coach in 2002.
-
You may have me with LaTech but Southern Miss was worse than we were in MBB and football last year.
-
If you go way back, our most successful football coach of all time came straight from Marshall High School where he coached Y.A. Tittle.
-
Dickey left this program in shambles. His last two seasons the offense was even more anemic than this year's. Once Utah State and NMSU weren't on our schedule anymore, we got smoked by Troy and FAU.
-
How many have less and do more? Sun Belt schools? You don't have anything to back up your statement.
-
Is this speculation or fact? What percentage of the ones that have less, do more?
-
Nope, I met the guy one time at a tailgate in Austin but I noticed the massive difference from 1999 to now and he is the one constant.
-
It's funny how RV gets credit for that loss because he did what EVERYONE here wanted him to do in firing McCarney. McCarney didn't have to cultivate million dollar relationships.
-
He has had ONE football hire with the stadium in place and the previous hire you all rip on so much helped get the thing built Right but I'll bet if a new AD brought the second coming of Hayden Fry in while doubling your season ticket price and taking away your parking pass, you wouldn't be very happy.
-
I don't go off half-cocked. I take calculated risks. You don't quit a job before you have your next job. Firing RV is not a calculated risk. You need to make damn sure you have something better lined up before you get rid of the one that brought you a standard of living you've never had before.
-
We didn't pay that in '07 and Dodge is lumped in with McCarney when the failure moniker is thrown around here. We were lucky to get Dodge at the time. Everyone said it was a solid hire. The learning curve was just too steep and it didn't work out.
