Why We're Headed To The Dreaded Play-in Game
Greenblood94 replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Basketball
I just spent some time browsing the NCAA webpage for Principles and Procedures for Establishing the Men's Bracket. To say the least, it is a complicated process, but there were some interesting things I got out of it. Among them were: At no point in the process may an athletic director or commissioner on the selection committee vote for a team he/she represents. When 24 or fewer teams remain in the pool of teams, a member may not participate in "list X teams" votes if a team he/she represents as a commissioner or athletics director is included. An athletics director or commissioner may not participate in cross-country votes (i.e., ballots where the members rank a selected number of teams) that involve a team the individual represents. All votes will be by secret ballot. At any time during the process, the chair may request a "nitty-gritty" report, which compares teams that are under consideration. Among the resources available to the committee are computer rankings, head-to-head results, chronological results, Division I results, non-conference results, home and away results, results in the last 10 games, polls and the coaches' regional advisory committees' rankings. The last item answers whether attendance in conference tournaments is considered. It obviously is not. The procedures for seeding the 65 teams is a bit nebulous, but basically they are voted on eight teams at a time, with the lowest four being seeded 61-65, then another four teams are added to the top four and voted on, with the lowest four being added to the bottom of the seed list, and so on until all 65 teams are seeded. I'm still a bit foggy as to how this one is really achieved. Seeds 64 and 65 are put in the "Opening Round" game, as the NCAA calls it, and the winner faces a #1 seed playing at a Friday-Sunday first round site. There is no NCAA mandate that says the Opening Round winner plays the "top #1 seed", since that team may be placed in a Thursday-Saturday first-round site, but it will still be a #1 seeded opponent. To try and achieve an overall balanced bracket in each region, there are principles involved for placing teams within each region. For instance, with regard to the first and second rounds: --A team cannot play in an arena where it has played more than three regular-season games, excluding conference post-season tournaments. --A host institution cannot play at the site where the institution is hosting (for instance, Washington State would not play in Spokane, even though they are not from there, because they are the host at that location.) --With regard to conferences, each of the first three teams selected from a conference must be placed in different regions; there cannot be more than two conference teams in the same region (unless nine teams from a conference are selected), and those two teams cannot meet prior to the regional final. There are also considerations like avoiding rematches of regular-season games and the previous year's tournament games in the first two rounds if possible. It's very possible to get tired head reading these guidelines, but it does give some insight as to how the teams are seeded and end up where they do. I wouldn't want North Texas in the play-in, oops, opening round game, but its out of our control. If it happens, they'll deal with it the best they can. -
At the risk of sounding like a lawyer... "Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a recruit in the Class of '08 can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 6, 2008." In other words, no one should count their chickens...at lot can and will happen between now and then.

And A Small Serving Of Sour Grapes
Greenblood94 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Basketball
In the interest of full disclosure, the rest of the quote from Banks reads thusly: "... But they did play good defense, I give them credit on that. We just didn’t execute on offense as well as we should have.” Further down in the article, Nutt continues: “When we did get some open looks, he (Banks) was rushed a little bit,” Nutt said. “They did a number on him. They had a good game plan. They really tried to ‘physical’ us and really tried to pay attention to him.” If the refs aren't going to blow the whistle, players have to adjust their games accordingly...it's one of the oldest strategies in the game. By the way, IMHO, the refs were calling stuff in the first half. I spent a lot of time in the chat room bemoaning the belief that our guys were not getting their money's worth on the foul calls, and should be fouling harder. -
According to The Helmet Project, which is a great website if you haven't already been there, this helmet was worn "around 1967". Since then, all Mean Green helmets have been green (in varying shades).

Someone in the athletic dept. did not have much to do today. There is a poll on the front page of the website that asks the following question... What was your favorite moment from the Sun Belt Basketball Tournament? 1) First round home win against UL-Lafayette 2) Comeback win against UL-Monroe 3) Calvin Watson winning the Sun Belt Championship MVP 4) Winning the Sun Belt Tournament to advance to the NCAA Tournament With all due respect to Calvin, what other answer could there be but #4???? Duh!!!! Appropriately enough, it has 85.4% of the vote at the time of this post (48 votes cast). Calvin has 10.4%, the comeback against UL-Monroe has 4.2%, and no one has voted for the win over UL-Lafayette. Go figure.

Emmitt had a sign also, that said: "Gas from Denton to Lafayette: $60 Shrimp Dinner in Lafayette: $20 Dancin (sic) after 19 years: PRICELESS" I never saw it on TV, but there's a pic of him holding it in another thread. -
Can we get someone to buy naming rights for Fouts without them actually looking at the field??? That always seems to be the dealbreaker...

Watching Rick Bayless On Cold Pizza
Greenblood94 replied to bdan2002's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Don't waste your time with e-mails...Bayless lives for that kind of crap, 'cause it means you're watching or listening to him. Just ignore him, and he'll go away. Everyone is right about Bayless saying things to intentionally piss people off...when Aikman first got here and was in a brief "QB battle" with Steve Walsh, Bayless kept insisting that Walsh was the choice the Cowboys should make, that he could play circles around Aikman. Then, when Aikman won the job, Bayless insisted it was only because there was something physically wrong with Walsh...hell yes, there was something wrong, Walsh couldn't hold Aikman's jock when it came to throwing an accurate pass. Notice how long Bayless lasted in Dallas after Aikman led the 'Boys to those Super Bowls??? While everyone is entitled to their opinion, when it comes to the former "Dr. Bay" of Ticket Radio fame, he just needs to keep his to himself. -
Congratulations To The 2007 Sbc Champions!

Yes it is. -
Who knows, maybe you'll run into Harrison Ford at the St. Patrick's Day Parade...

They play that game on the Tuesday after Selection Sunday (so a week from tonight), in Dayton, Ohio. It's a pain for the winner, especially if they have to hightail it to the West Coast for a Thursday game...although usually the play-in winner plays on Friday. It almost goes without saying that the play-in winner has never won their second tournament game.

According to the NCAA website, the following sites are already sold out of tickets: Buffalo, Sacramento, Winston-Salem, Columbus and Spokane Of course, that doesn't mean you can't get tickets through the school or Stubhub.com or a scalper...just passing along the info. According to Ticketmaster.com...seats at New Orleans are $148, regardless of location, for a 3-game book. Individual tickets are not available online. Tickets for Chicago are $225, Lexington tickets are $150, all for 3-game books, all according to the NCAA website.

Please remember that these articles are based on the best GUESSES of the authors. No matter how educated these GUESSES are, no one will really know for sure until Selection Sunday, which is the best hour of TV in sports. There are still tournament results that could severely alter the projections of the "experts". We continue now with the tournament seeding speculation, already in progress...

If that comes to fruition for us, it would be 1988 all over again...except in San Antonio as opposed to Salt Lake City back then. The more things change, the more they stay the same...

40 Minutes Left Before Dancing
Greenblood94 replied to SouthBendGreen's topic in Mean Green Basketball
There's an old sports saying: They don't ask how, they ask how many. Last time I checked, the Mean Green are in the SBC Tournament finals, with a chance to make it to the NCAAs, which doesn't exactly happen every year around here. Why not let the results speak for themselves and enjoy this and support the team without passing judgement on how good they really are, or how good they would be if they had better opposition? Can we just be thankful for the accomplishments with picking things apart? In 24 hours, with any luck at all, the Mean Green will be one of the last 65 teams left standing this season. Enjoy the moment. GO MEAN GREEN! Beat the Indians! -
Gage had actually stepped away from head coaching duties and was the Lewisville ISD Athletic Director at the time he was hired by Austin College.

Unfortunately for Roger, it was Herb Scott, one of the Cowboys offensive linemen at the time. It was a desperation toss at the end of the 1979 playoff game against the Rams that ended up in Scott's hands. Yes, the Cowboys were flagged, and yes, Roger's career and the Cowboys' season was over. With the exception of the loss to the Steelers in Super Bowl XIII the year before, that was the most frustrating Cowboys defeat I ever saw (keep in mind my viewing of the Cowboys started with Super Bowl VI). There were a number of mistakes made by officials in the latter part of that game, and some stupid moves made by the Cowboys that contributed to the loss against the Rams that year. But I digress...

The Texas Bowl and the voice of reason...
Greenblood94 replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
Great post, EulessEagle. I agree 100% The Texas Bowl organizers didn't snub us...we were never on their radar to begin with. Until we win more OOC games, until our attendance figures and road game following become so good that the movers and shakers of the conferences we desire HAVE to take notice of us, and until we have a football facility that doesn't scream "Division II or worse", we will have to be content with trying to make our bones in the lowest-rated conference in Division I. We could win every SBC title from now until Doomsday...if nothing else about us changes for the better, we will never be considered for anything else but the New Orleans Bowl. -
McNeese forgets uniforms-plays Cajuns w/Cajun gear
Greenblood94 replied to stebo's topic in Mean Green Basketball
During the 1979 NBA Eastern Conference Finals, a couple of bags belonging to the San Antonio Spurs were misplaced by the airlines, and at least three Spurs showed up at the arena without their unis. The Washington Bullets, the Spurs opponent, loaned the players some Bullets road jerseys, which were then worn by the Spurs players inside out. There is a Sports Illustrated cover shot of Elvin Hayes dunking a basketball during that game, and in the background you can see Mike Gale wearing the donated uniform, along with other normally clad Spurs in the picture. It looks like there's a third team on the court... -
Bowl Eligible Schools Not Goin' Bowlin'
Greenblood94 replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
I know this was probably posted just for informational purposes, but does a 6-5 team that doesn't win their conference really deserve to go to a bowl? Bowl-eligible doesn't mean bowl-worthy. -
Because, except for high-profile playoff games, it is not a meaningful statistic. Southlake Carroll/Plano drew 32,000+ for the first game of a tripleheader at Texas Stadium last Saturday. I was there. I guarantee you, the attendance for the second game, Hebron/Wylie, was, at most, 10,000. That included fans from the first game who hung around just to watch an intriguing 4A matchup, and fans from the nightcap, Gainesville/Liberty-Eylau, who came early. The final game drew maybe 6,000 tops. Plus, someone would have to count tickets to determine attendance. Except for facilities like Texas Stadium, where they'd do that anyway, what school district is gonna pay someone to count the attendance, and who'd do it for free, just to find out how many people came to the game?
