Not bad...not much of a change to me. I do like the maroon pants with white shirt...I kinda wish we'd stay with the white shirts and green pants on the road, but it's not that big of a deal. -
Barry Bonds Hits 756*
Greenblood94 replied to UNTflyer's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I apologize in advance for the Plumm-like diatribe you are about to read, but sometimes, you gotta vent your spleen… One of the most vivid memories of my childhood was being allowed to stay up late on April 8, 1974 and watch Hank Aaron, my favorite player along with Brooks Robinson, hit #715. Milo Hamilton's radio call of that historic dinger has stayed with me to this day, and I can recite it verbatim. As the years have gone by, I have dreamed that when someone finally did break Aaron's mark, I could share the moment with my son, and he would have a memory to build on from his childhood. Well, my son is 6, three years younger than I was when Aaron passed Ruth. We did not watch Bonds hit his record-breaking homer...I was at a meeting and learned of Bonds' feat through a text message received during a break. Baseball is not yet high on my son’s interests yet, but it's getting there. In retrospect, I’m glad my son and I didn’t get to see Bonds set the record live. I don’t know how I would’ve handled the moment. Before he took steroids, Barry Bonds was one of the top five all-around players of his era, and a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He didn’t need to take performance-enhancing drugs, in my opinion, to increase his legacy in baseball, but he did. He did. If you don’t believe it yet, read Game of Shadows, or just wait. It will come out, just not soon enough for me. Maybe Bonds felt that, with his reputation for being surly and standoffish, he needed to be able to make an indelible mark in baseball. For whatever the reasons, what Bonds did was illegal, plain and simple. But that doesn’t take away the fact that Bonds is the all-time home run champion now. There will be no asterisk placed on Bonds’ feat. He lived up to the rules in place at the time, and was never caught cheating. Even if he is convicted tomorrow, his record will stand. As I watched the replays on SportsCenter at home, I found myself feeling disappointed. Disappointed that Bonds felt the need to commit such illegal acts to help him achieve what he felt he needed to do. Disappointed at baseball in general and Bud Selig in particular, for turning a blind eye to the illegal activity of Bonds and the rest of the players who cheated, for the sake of making the game popular again, and then dragging their collective feet in investigating what should have been obvious to everyone. Selig made his bed, but refused to lie in it, by choosing not to attend the game last night. Even when he was present when Bonds tied the record, Selig looked confused, and wasn’t sure how he was supposed to act. He didn’t come onto the field, and had to be prompted to stand up at the appropriate moment. It has been said that baseball never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity, and the commissioner’s conduct in the last week only magnifies that. If Kennesaw Mountain Landis were the commissioner, Bonds would have never had the chance to go for the record. The same man who banned Shoeless Joe Jackson and the rest of the 1919 Chicago Black Sox for life throwing the World Series (even though they were acquitted in a trial) would have suspended Bonds (and any other player found taking performance-enhancing substances) for a period of time sufficient enough to make chasing the record impossible, for even a man of Bonds’ immense talent. Landis would have done it for the good of the game, legal system and “innocent until proven guilty” be damned. But it’s not about the game anymore. Whether you are player or an owner, it’s all about the money now. The one bright spot of the evening, to me, was Hank Aaron. Though not present in person, he delivered a videotaped message congratulating Bonds on his achievement that was genuine, heartfelt, and devoid of sarcasm or innuendo. Whatever personal feelings Aaron may have about Bonds, Hammerin’ Hank stepped up and showed the kind of class I’d be proud to see my son to display anytime. I’m sure that a few years down the road, Alex Rodriguez, barring injury or some other misfortune, will be closing in on Bonds’ record. When it happens, I’m sure my son will be rooting for the man who shares his first name. With any luck at all, we will be together watching the historic moment, and my son will have that treasured memory that I want him to keep the rest of his life…and somewhere in there, I will tell him about the class and dignity of Henry Aaron. -
Just remember, someone who saw you wearing "their" number probably felt the same way. That's why I like the Cowboys Ring of Honor, the player is honored, the number is allowed to live on...although if I see someone wearing #12 for the Cowboys during the regular season, I might bust a blood vessel or two.

First of all, let me say I have all the respect and admiration in the world for what Montey is doing. Secondly, let me say (with tongue firmly planted in cheek) that if TD allows the jersey change...well, if you thought the back of Jarrod Saltalamacchia's jersey looked busy... -
Hey, there ARE worse NT hats out there...

From the UNT Athletics web site: "Single-Game Tickets for Oklahoma Oklahoma tickets will be available for order to our Mean Green Priority account holders based on their Mean Green Priority Point standing (see chart). If quantities allow, all other groups may place orders starting on Wednesday, August 1st. These groups will be required to make a $20 per ticket donation to the Mean Green Club and be allowed to purchase a maximum of 4 tickets. The acceptance of an order does not guarantee its fulfillment. Orders will be filled based on availability by the date the order was received." Now I'm as big an NT fan as anyone on this board, I believe in Coach Dodge, and I realize the Athletic Department is trying to raise as much money as it can while the opportunity is there, but I can see how tactics like this, before the team has done anything on the field, would turn off the casual NT fan who might otherwise be interested in making the road trip to Norman. There is a certain calculated risk in doing this...if the $20 MGC donation earned the ticket buyer some Priority Points, it might not be so bad.

At $67 per ticket, I can see why...

An Even Better Version Of Interlocked Nt Hat!

Nice design. If they could move the grey to where the strip of white is, and make the grey part white, I bet it would look even sweeter... -
Thank you! I was going to mention Scottie, who played for NT in 1992. He wasn't flashy, and he only played one year for NT. He spent two years at Sam Houston State under Ron Randleman, and was then diagnosed with diabetes. He transferred to NT to be a volunteer coach under Dennis Parker once his diabetes was under control, but he still had a year of eligibility left, and so he played for the Eagles. In his first game, the '92 season opener against Abilene Christian, he caught a pass from Mitch Maher at around midfield, and outran the ACU defense for a touchdown. The TD went for about 87 yards all told, and broke the school record for longest TD pass (to be broken the next season by Maher to Redwine for 96 yards against Nicholls State). If Scottie Ford dropped a pass that season, it was very much the exception rather than the rule. Ford reminded me, in a small way, of Hall-of-Famer Don Maynard. Ford's numbers will never compare to those of Johnny Quinn, Marcus Camper, or other receivers of that ilk, but he will always hold a special place in my mind as one of the best to play for the Mean Green.

Even if NT had an indoor practice facility, heck, even if all the facilities were equal, TCU would still get the nod over NT. Why? Do the math... Approximate driving distances: TCU to new Cowboys stadium - 17.5 miles UNT to new Cowboys stadium - 46.5 miles Facilities aside, UNT is in the wrong location to be able to be an active host for anything involving Super Bowl week.

After re-reading this thread, I realize that Tanker Sam might have been alluding to that same point, just not in so many words. Without trying to be critical, my point is essentially the same as JayDub's: don't get caught up in jersey numbers before the regular season.
-
Jersey numbers in the off-season don't mean a thing. Veterans will still have their numbers, but everyone else gets whatever's available during the pre-season. The Cowboys always have someone wearing #12 in training camp, but when the regular season rolls around, that number disappears. If the Mighty Quinn makes the roster, then we can worry about what his number will be.

It would be interesting to see what impact the Texas Rangers' involvement in the issue had on the vote. The issue was flying pretty much under the radar of everyone in the Metroplex OUTSIDE Grand Prairie, until it was announced that the Rangers had given $30,000 to a group working to defeat the measure. Rangers President Jeff Cogen went on Randy Galloway's ESPN Radio show a couple days before the vote and basically made a fool of himself in trying to defend the Rangers position of not wanting the Grand Prairie stadium. His points sounded really stupid to me, especially when you consider there are two other minor league franchises, including the Rangers' own Class AA farm team in Frisco, in the area. If the Rangers are worried that the 3,000 people who would probably attend the games in Grand Prairie (many of whom would not be going to a Rangers game the same night even without a choice) will adversely affect their product, then something's seriously wrong at Rangers Ballpark. Just wondering how much of the victory can be attributed to a "Rangers backlash". I don't think the measure would have been defeated without the publicity surrounding the Rangers involvement, but these days one can never tell. Congrats to the citizens of Grand Prairie for helping their city add to its growth.

More Than 40,000 Seniors Fail Taks Test

I never wish bad news on anyone, but I have to think this development can only help Patrick's chances of sticking with the Dolphins... Docs recommend delay of Williams' NFL reinstatement By Chris Mortensen ESPN.com Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams tested positive for marijuana in April and will not be allowed to apply for reinstatement to the NFL until September, sources said. Williams was suspended last year for violation of the substance abuse policy and was eligible to be reinstated this month, but the league's medical advisors that oversee Williams' personal rehabilitation program recently notified commissioner Roger Goodell of the positive test, sources said. The doctors also recommended that Williams not be allowed to apply for reinstatement until September, sources said. The commissioner usually adheres to the advice of the medical advisors under the substance abuse policy. "Falling off the wagon is part of rehab," a source said. "Based on the medical evidence in Ricky's case, the doctors say it's too early to come back. He had the positive test last month. Remember, he's been diagnosed with social anxiety disorder -- that's a real disease and a good percentage of those folks self-medicate with substances like marijuana, often at the moment they are about to have a high level of social interaction." League spokesman Greg Aiello said the NFL would have no comment, as did Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene. David Cornwell, an attorney who has represented Williams during his substance abuse cases, said he would honor the confidentiality policies in effect with another no comment. Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

Poll: Best Stadium In The Belt
Greenblood94 replied to Mean'n'Green07's topic in Mean Green Football
Sorry, but there is no comparison between the distance of I-35 from Fouts and from DKR. UT has a entire track and field stadium between DKR and I-35 (which they use now that the track at DKR is no more), not to mention Robert Dedman Drive and Red River St. between the two, feeding both stadiums. A decent heave of a rock from the top row of Fouts could hit the windshield of a car on I-35. Barry Bonds couldn't hit a baseball far enough to sniff I-35 from DKR's closest point to the Interstate. If you map the two locations out on Microsoft's Live Search, you'll see what I mean. -
Mavs

Oh, I'm sorry, I was distracted because I was looking at our THREE NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BANNERS, all won in the last eight years. And yeah, you beat us last season, congratulations on that...but the series was basically a coin flip...if Ginobili doesn't foul Dirk (and he DID foul him, I'm not disputing that) at the end of regulation in Game 7, maybe the Spurs bury the Heat in four. At least the Spurs know how to FINISH in the playoffs...you can have head-to-head in the regular season...I want to win in the PLAYOFFS. Say it LOUD...Go Spurs Go! TEAM is EVERYTHING. I'm sorry...I couldn't resist. -
Realizing this poll and 50 cents will get you a DMN on any street corner, look at it this way...the average Bills fan has probably never heard of any of the candidates, so they vote based on familiarity of the colleges...who do you think they are going to vote for, a guy from the National Champs, someone from a "Texas" school (which is still a four-letter word in their book, see Stanley Cup, Finals, 1999, a.k.a. "No Goal"), a guy from the Mid-America Conference (which at least has a rival to one of their universities) or a guy from a I-AA school?

Mavs
Greenblood94 replied to greenminer's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
I will state right off the bat that I am a Spurs fan first, Mavs fan second, in case you're wondering about my affiliation... I couldn't NOT watch the second half last night...it was like watching a train wreck..you want to turn away, but it's just so damn fascinating to watch a disaster like that take place in front of your eyes... And while I agree with Lifer that the Mavs got swept in the regular season, the top-seeded teams are supposed to crush the lowest seeds in the playoffs...every other team winning 65+ games in NBA history has gone at least to the Conference Finals...you are supposed to impose YOUR will on the other team, not chase them around like the seeds were reversed...looks like Dwayne Wade was right last year... Well, look on the bright side Mavs fans, on Opening Night next season, they'll raise that "Southwest Division Champs" banner right next to the "Western Conference Champs" flag, and give Dirk the MVP trophy to boot...they can call it "Underachievement Night"... Speaking of which, how does Mark Cuban sell next season to the fans without blowing up at least part of the team??? Mike Rhyner had a great line last week..."Well, what a year for Metroplex sports fans, the Cowboys: out in the first round of the playoffs, the Stars: out in the first round, the Mavs: out in the first round, the Rangers: out in the first week of the season..." -
Nice work, DD, but it doesn't really tell us anything new. The most shocking part of C-USA's numbers is that they include an SMU draftee for the first time in seemingly forever.

Maybe its my turn to play the schlemiel, but Todd Ford is the offensive coordinator now. Flanigan is nowhere to be found on Coach Dodge's staff. BTW, nice to see Butch LaCroix back, also.
