It is truly amazing the number of things that have gone wrong this season including injuries and persons that left the team. The team is truly hobbled in so many ways.

I received an email today that SBC will provide a free internet broadcast. It will have "exclusive interviews with coaches from around the Sun Belt Conference as well as Commissioner Wright Waters. The live web only show will feature a look at the upcoming Sun Belt basketball season and will provide fans a place to gear up for the upcoming hoops action. The web show will be on air from 12-5 p.m. on Monday, October 13 and wrapping up from 9-11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 14." Full details are here.

Yes Gmg Members Can Complain About Coaches, Players
chrisfisher replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Dude - we had won something like 5 games since 2005 when Dodge arrived. That's a mess. Not to mention we now have a team full of new players including many freshman with no D-1 experience that are starting. -
Hehe. Took me a second to figure out what you meant. Your a sic bastard Corrected in original post.
-
I enrolled for my graduate degree in 2005. I was very excited about attending a school with legit D-1 sports, especially football, which was something I felt I missed out when getting my bachelors at UTSA. We were dominate in football in prior seasons with 24 straight home wins, so I felt there would be some great football to watch at Fouts. I had no idea what would follow. The football team since then has gone 7-33 in 4 seasons... an average of 2 wins per season.....ouch! I have never known a winning season or anything that remotely resembles a winning team. Yet, I remain through and true, a Mean Green fan. The only difference for me between Dodge and Dickey games is that the losses have become even uglier (recall that Dickey losses were painful too - running the ball on 3rd and 25). Yes, it is hard to watch. Yes, it is embarrassing. However, Todd Dodge is starting over... from scratch. The one thing Dickey had was a defense. Many of those players have graduated or left the team. It is obvious now that Dickey had few, if any, players on offense or defense ready to replace them. Dickey was in real trouble. Forward a few seasons later. Dodge takes over to rebuild. Nearly HALF of the players on the field are freshman or have never played for us. Folks, our football looks high schoolish because, frankly, many of our players just came out of high school. This is what happens when the cupboard is bare and you cannot properly mentor (whether coaches or senior players) a player over the course of several years into the system. We have so few senior starters that freshman have no role models of expected performance behaviors. I am not asking anyone to accept the losses. Something has to change, and I am not sure what just yet. What I am asking is that everyone settle down and take your medicine through this rebuild project. I know I have over the past 4 years. Do not abandon this team or its players. This will only make matters worse. Remember, FIU was 0-42 or something like that and the coaches were still able to recruit, build a new stadium, and, more recently, start winning some games. Hang in there Mean Green Nation!!!! We have important work ahead! Support the Mean Green! And take heed that Men's Basketball starts in a month!

I hear you. This is ugly. Maybe they would beat us. I don't know. But nonetheless, even a multi-million dollar coach that just went to a BCS bowl game is having many, many problems winning games. This doesn't excuse our extremely poor play either. I was just pointing out a similar situation with another team.
-
Hang in there folks. The million dollar man, June Jones, isn't doing much better his first year at SMU. SMU is 1-5 and the 1 win is over D2 Texas State by only 11 (and Texas State put 36 points on them). Do these scores and record look familiar: DATE OPPONENT W-L (CONF) RESULT 8/29 @ Rice 0-1 (0-1) L 56-27 9/06 Texas State 1-1 (0-1) W 47-36 9/13 @ No. 12 Texas Tech 1-2 (0-1) L 43-7 9/20 TCU 1-3 (0-1) L 48-7 9/25 @ Tulane 1-4 (0-2) L 34-27 10/04 @ UCF 1-5 (0-3) L 31-17 Mean Green football is ugly and gruesome to watch. But Dodge is basically doing a complete rebuild from the ground up. Hang in there. Sure, we will have a horrible season, but don't give up on this team.

For those of you that cannot make the game or do not get ESPN Plus, I just noticed that the game will be broadcast on ESPN360.com (free service if you internet provider subscribes).

I agree. This idea that champions are soft and cannot withstand losing seasons seem rediculous to me. True champion players never quit and accept the challenge before them, which in this case is a formidable one.
-
I'd give the stadium a stern talking to.

Let's Look Forward To This Saturday...
chrisfisher replied to Travis Scott's topic in Mean Green Football
I'll be there. A few blow out loses won't keep me from supporting my team! GO MEAN GREEN!! Finish off the season at 8-0!!! -
Agreed. Tough champions.... not pampered, sissy boy champions.
-
I disagree wholeheartedly. I'll take champion players any day of the year.

2008-2009 Men's Basketball Roster
chrisfisher replied to chrisfisher's topic in Mean Green Basketball
That's a great question that no one will be able to answer, unfortunately, until next season. 274Lb seems a little on the heavy side for 6'8." Wooden was 6'9" 245lb and looked a little heavy. But everyone carries their weight differently so you just don't know. -
I agree KRAM. I am extremely disappointed and embarrassed for that performance. Nonetheless, I have no choice but support my team. After all, who else would I support? UNT will grant my doctoral degree - not UT, not A&M, not Tech - UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS. I started my UNT education in 2005 so I wasn't around for the glory years of 2001-2004 and have ONLY known crappy blow out style losing seasons. If I can remain an enthusiastic fan, anyone can. Thank god men's basketball and Pit Crew fun are just around the corner!

We seem to have consistently good running game in each game despite poor plays in other areas. I kept thinking during the game yesterday, "run the damn ball!"
-
Despite all our problems, we actually have a good running game. And our offensive line, the black eye last year, is much improved this year. Montgomery and Dunbar consistently have nice runs and great average yards per carry stats. With our terrible special teams and sub-par defense, Dodge might do well to focus the offense on our running backs and the running game. It keeps the other team's offense off the field and eats the clock.

2008-2009 Men's Basketball Roster
chrisfisher replied to chrisfisher's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Dang, SMU recruit Cameron Spencer is listed at 6-8 274Lb. Now that's some beef. -
2008-2009 Men's Basketball Roster
chrisfisher replied to chrisfisher's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Now the actual 2008-2009 roster with all players including new recruits is up at meangreensports.com. -
I remember seeing his name before and so I searched this board. I found that Shannon Shorter was ranked #30 by texashoops for the 2007 class. I'm sure our recruiting gurus will have some better info.

Thoughts On Fee Going To Unt's Students
chrisfisher replied to UNTflyer's topic in Mean Green Football
Remember, students are no different from the general population. They vote with a "what have you done for me lately" and how they "feel" at that moment about the issue with little thought about the long term benefits or costs. Therefore, the best thing that could happen for a positive student vote is for the Mean Green to start winning and winning soon. Dodge could truly help himself and the team in terms of a new stadium if they could beat Rice and win 1 or 2 in SBC play over the next few weeks. This gives the students hope and a warm fuzzy feeling inside that will most definitely propel them to vote "yes" for the stadium. The solution is simple: win. -
Actually 3/12 = 1/4 of the season. But I agree. It goes by fast....Actually, the limited number of games when compared to other sports such as basketball is one thing I do not like about college football.
-
Tell me again why I want to go to a noisy high school gym with wooden pull out bleachers that holds only 2000? A good turn out from the Pit Crew will eat up almost half of that. I know this nostalgic for some, but otherwise I'm not sure what motivated them to do this. Maybe the were trying to give the team a "road game" (somewhere other than the Super Pit) to get them ready for the intense early road play??
-
This appears to be a more competitive/challenging schedule than last year, particulary because we play alot OOC games on the road. In fact, for the month of November we only have 1 home game (not counting the exhibition). We typically start very strong so I hope that continues with this schedule. We only play WKU and USA 1x, both on their court. Those will be key games. I think we take on every version of Arkansas with games against Arkansas, Arkansas-Little Rock, and Arkansas State right in a row. This should be a fun season. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pit Crew get ready!

Knowing they were heavily favored to win will only make their loss to the Mean Green even more unbearable.
