UNT -4 over Tulsa (opening Vegas odds)
chrisfisher replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Basketball
Damn, I'm excited about this game!!! Tomorrow can't come soon enough! I sure hope we win! We need Wooden, Watson, Bell, Sturns, Young, and Williams to bring their A-game, our should I say, Green Game. -
I have the hat right in front me. It is made by A-Flex. On the front it says in big, bold white letters: Mean Green (with the trademark symbol). I wouldn't say it looks like last night's uniforms, I would say it is identical to them. It is all black with white Mean Green letters and white trim.

My dad flew up to watch a game with me a few weeks ago, and purchased a Mean Green hat while I was sipping on free Bud Light. To my surprise, the hat was black and white. I commented that I hadn't seen that color scheme before. I rationalized that it was a very deep, dark green. My first thought when seeing the black jersey's last night was that we are in the mist of changing colors and uniforms because the jerseys last night looked identical to the hat my dad purchased. Probably just a coincidence and I seriously doubt we are changing colors, but I thought I'd post my observations.

I might be in. I need to find out my school test schedule as well as see what the wife thinks. Were you planning on driving back the same day? or finding a cheap hotel?

Our big men don't seem to play "big," Howerton especially. We were talking about this in the student section at the UTA game. We have numorous 6' 8" or higher big men who could drive to the basket or get a foul trying to do so on nearly evey feed. I hope Keith Wooden changes all that. He has been agrressive in the middle, and we are starting to go to him more frequently, but he seems to often miss "easy" shots. I suspect he is shaking off some rust and getting use to the speed of the game again after sitting out for a year. At least I hope that is the case. Williams seems to miss some "easy" under the basket shots too, though he has really stepped up the past 2 games. Feeding the ball to the big men in middle would open our perimenter shooting for our Watson, Sturns, Bell, etc.

Why do y'all turn on everyone so quickly? Why would you think RV had something to do with this? Why would you even post this stuff?? RV did what most everyone wanted... he fired DD. He took alot of heat from this firing, and now he gets it from this forum. I certainly wouldn't want some of you covering my back in the heat of battle.

Well Nothing new tonight except all in black

A student in the stands told me that they were a set of practice uniforms. I make no representation of the credibility of this statement. I am only relaying what I heard. -
Make no mistake about it. We beat ourselves, not UTA. We gave them every chance to win and they only did it by 2. I take nothing away from UTA, though, they made their shots and won. Quincy and Sturns have both been hit and miss over the past season. However, the last 2 games Quincy and Sturns have earned their way into a starting role, IMHO. I hope to see them both start at the next game.

I forgot to add: after the very depressing Scrappy we have seen at the basketball games, we figured that Scrappy is either (1) on anti-depressants or (2) drunk
-
I saw it... it was hilarious. I thought for a second they were going to actually fight... but the got more or less separated and then a UNT person said something Scrappy and it was over...

Nebraska convincingly beat the #25 ranked Creighton tonight: 73 - 61. Mean Green needs to get it together by the end of the month. I WANT TO BEAT NEBRASKA!
-
Calvin Watson... 26 points... yes! Our team responded to K.D.'s absence.... no doubt.
-
21 points...shooting 80%....OK, I am officially a Sturns fan now!
-
I am soooooo happy to see these stats.... in previous post, I called on Quincy Williams as the big man who needs to step up. Quincy did so big time against UTA, and once again against Rice. It sounds like Sturns was on fire too!!!!!

Just found this: from KNTU-FM website: Live coverage of University of North Texas Mean Green football is on kntu.com. KNTU has coverage from the opening kickoff on kntu.com, while you can listen to live coverage of University of North Texas Men's Basketball on 88.1 FM

Does anyone know if UNT will cover the Rice game since our announcers are at the football game today? I checked meangreensports.com, and they say nothing about today's basketball game. An internet feed is available from Rice, but you have to pay. I am going to the football game today, but wanted to have a radio attached to my ear so I can cover the football and basketball game.

We will severely miss K.D. I hope he can take a medical red shirt and play next year (NT's dream team!). However, we absolutely have the talent to continue winning games. We have a deep bench, and Sturns, especially, will have to step up as a team player/scorer.

The "jumbotron" couldn't get the replay of the final shot playing until about 5-10 minutes after the game ended. My brother, an aggie fan and thus big 12 fan who relies on the impact of technology in college sports, asked, "why the hell didn't your jumbotron technician get the final shot up immediately, right after it happened. Everyone knows that the fans booing as it plays influences the officials, and you lose home court advantage if you don't?" No further comment necessary.
-
You have a point here. We shot perimeter a vast majority of the time. In fact, my brother, an aggie fan, asked why we didn't get the ball to Wooden more often. Sure he missed some easy shots, but he was a big man that had control of the middle and could not be stopped. If we went to Wooden more often we would have easier shots as well as more fouls shots. One other thing.. someone commented on this board that Wooden didn't get any calls. This is very astute observation as he was fouled quite often. In fact, we heard one hand hit him so hard while shooting we could hear it in the student section. Yes, the officiating was bad, but we should have won nonetheless.
-
Sure, it was a bad call at the end. But our first half play was even worse. The bottom line is that we didn't take this game away from UTA. That is what REALLY screwed us. We often started slow last season, even in our wins. I hope that is not how we play this season. I still feel very confident about this team. Ben Bell and Keith Woodson are just getting warmed up with this team. Calvin and Kendrick, enough said. Quincy Williams had a great scoring night. He carried us while in a offensive slump. I hope Quincy continues to step up. In fact, I stated a week ago that he is a key player that needs to become dominate force for us. Rich Young and Sturns are also picking up their game. I wish I would have seen Harold Stewart more tonight. Folks, we absolutely have the talent to go very far this season. I hope the Mean Green can put it all together.

I spoke with several of the Mean Green players after the game, and none of them had seen the replay yet of the final UTA basket made after time expired; however, to my surprise none of our players cared....AT ALL. Each player told me more or less the same thing: we shouldn't let our game be determined by one officiating call. And as Johnny Jones walked out from tunnel, I asked him if he had seen the replay, and he said no... he shook my hand and gave me gentle pat on the back and said he wasn't that concerned about it. By the way, Johnny Jones is such a classy guy. I really hope that he is with UNT for many years. You can tell by the way he speaks to fans, the media, and his players, he really loves being coach of UNT basketball. I have to say I liked what I heard from the players, no excuses. This team wants to control their own destiny and not rely outside forces, bad officiating or not. I can only hope this game was simply a set back, and that we will come on strong for the rest of the season.

Oh! I gotcha. I figured I was reading something wrong. I thought it was a rating based on our current schedule (including non-played games). Thanks!
-
I also sent an email out to about 20 psychology students.. hopefully a few will show.

You know.. I thought we had just an OK schedule in terms of strength. But somehow our Sagarin strength of schedule is rated #62 in the nation. Moreover, we have a stronger strength of schedule than almost every top 25 team. I don't know much about Sagarin so I could be misinterpreting or misapplying how the system works.
