How important is signing Riley Dodge next year?
chrisfisher replied to MeanGreenZen's topic in Mean Green Football
He did say, "but from what I’ve heard he is a marginal Division IA prospect. That is good news for UNT." I guess I missed his point. -

I don't understand the gist of your argument. Why would we want Riley if he is only a "marginal D1A prospect." I thought we are trying to get away from mediocrity? -
The real hire to watch - defensive coordinator
chrisfisher replied to The Fake Lonnie Finch's topic in Mean Green Football
Is Evans worth keeping? I lost respect for him when he head coached one game (forget who it was against) this season and did a "K8MITB" style performance. What really irked me was that during the Mean Green Insider interview concerning this game, he said with a silly smirk on his face, "we got out coached." UUUUGGGGHH. -
I really like that we will potentially have several coaches on staff that have a true love for UNT because of their prior coaching or playing experiences.

UALR also beat a good Akron team earlier this season. I think consistency is their main problem this season. I wouldn't write off anyone out of the SBC just yet either. It seems when conference play starts EVERYONE steps up their game a notch. We had a good start this season but we'll have to keep it up throughout conference play - something we couldn't do last season despite a decent record mid way through the year.

He has played quite a bit, though for very short periods of time, typically when we are winning big. He looks very promising, though he is still a bit spastic like most freshman are. He is very, very fast on the court, and has a very nice looking shot. He should turn out to be a great recruit.

Actually, I think I heard someone sitting at the table, I think to his Dodge's left (couldn't see who it was) quietly say, "don't answer that."

Last week Jonnie Jones was talking up storm about how great a place North Texas is and now our new football coach... THIS IS WHAT I IMAGINED (AND HOPE FOR) COMING TO A D1A COLLEGE! Refreshing.
-
I love to do it, but wont' be around due to the Christmas holiday. To tell you truth, I've never tailgated before b/c (1) this is the first college I've attended that has D1A sports and (2) I have no one to tailgate with b/c apparently I am the only graduate psychology student that cares about our sports ;-) I'm definitely up for it for another game though.

Our win over Nichols inched us up a bit to #17. Great to be in this poll a second week. The poll can be found here

You may have a point. If anyone told me at the start of the season, we'd lose Kendrick early on and still be 7-2 in the middle of December (after several tough road games), I'd tell them they were crazy. I hope we can hold on for Kendrick's return. Also, someone else mentioned that we seem to play to the level of the other team. This may be an astute observation, and we may very well step it up during conference play. Time will tell.

Western Kentucky vs Southern Illinois
chrisfisher replied to Buford_Julep's topic in Mean Green Basketball
This game was one the most exciting games I've watched on TV for while. Western Kentucky lost by 3, but WKU is a GREAT team. WKU plays very similar to us: they started the game off down a bunch very quickly, perimeter passing, looking for the open 2 point jump shot or 3 shot, and they send the ball to their big man under the basket some but were not completely dedicated to it. They are very fast and athletic too. We will have our hands full, as will they. -
Before the game started, I posted a bunch of reasons why I was concerned about this game. But I happened to submit the post right when GoMeanGreen crashed and it lost my text.

Welcome friend. I am really glad to hear more students will be coming out. My daughter and I have not missed a home game this season! You must have been sitting right near us during the UTA game b/c I was right near that weird guy too. My brother also attended the UTA game with me. He & I were extremely loud on the yells, and we look alike to so may remember us. Anyhow, welcome to Mean Green land... great to have you on board.

Emmitt01, I think he means the 3 point signs that hang on the rails... not 3 signs...

scary! we got lazy with the lead.
-
Harold Stewart is making me smile with 2 hard slam dunks!
-
Keith Wooden started out great, but picked up 2 quick fouls. Damn! I was hoping for a break out game from him. We're still making some of those silly, self-inflicted turn overs.
-
Thanks Harry! I forgot to check this over the past week. Your previous post included this. I thought this deserved its own thread. Great! Mean Green voted #21 in the nation for mid-majors, and this included the Nebraska loss. Also, Western Kentucky is ranked #5.

I am not sure who you are addressing this too, but I can say I did not mean to be negative. I agree that things are looking up. Nonetheless, the turn overs are very concerning. We have been doing this even in a few of our wins (ex. Texas State game) and getting away with it. However, we melted down during Nebraska. You have to ask yourself a question, which was the basis of my analysis: Why do players who obviously know how to dribble, pass, and shoot very well come out and play horrible for a half. How many times did players bounce the ball on their foot only to send it out of bounds? Or throw the ball away? Or were not ready for the pass? Or missed the open shot? Why can they look bad one half, and then in another half look like a different team? That was the question I was trying to answer. With 27 turn overs and poor shooting, you'd think we would have lost by more than 19. We could have won that game, but we didn't have our heads screwed on straight. Our boys wanted that win toooo badly. It affected every aspect of their game. They were nervous, rigid, and over thought everything.

I took my daughter to this past Saturday's free basketball clinic. Jonnie Jones, his coaches, and most of the players attended. Afterwards, the Mean Green held a practice and invited everyone to watch. Some observations: 1. Jonathon Jackson is a class guy. My daughter was in his group. He was very kind with all the kids. 2. Jonathon Jackson is tall. I didn't realize how tall he is. 3. Jonathon Jackson looked good in practice. I hope we see more of him in games. 4. If I didn't know who this team was and had to guess who the leader was based on the practice, I'd undoubtedly say: Harold Stewart. He was funny, energetic, talkative, and looked like he was large and in charge. Also, he LOVES to slam dunk the ball. I hope to see more of this in games. 5. Harold Edwards - looked pretty good in practice and in our last home game. I wonder if he should be playing more. 6. Keith Wooden looked similar to how he did in games. I saw him miss several easy under the basket shots. I don't know why he insists on using the backboard when he could just slam it in!?! I still believe that he has a ton of potential. 7. Rich Young looks really polished on his shots, even in practice. Made most of his shots. I don't recall Rich shooting this well last season. 8. Mangrum looks like he could turn out to be a great recruit. He is still a bit raw talent, but his shot mechanics look very good. He is very fast on the court and brings good energy to the team. 9. Kendrick Davis had off his thick arm brace/wrap and instead had a smaller rap. He said he'll be back in 2-3 weeks, but that he "hopes to recover sooner than the doctors say he will." Kendrick worked out with the team in some drills and ran up and down the stairs during others. 10. Jonnie Jones is such a classy and nice guy. I really like having people like Jones represent UNT. I sure hope he continues to win games b/c I very much want him to be around for a long time.

I think we need to give Jones until the end of next season. He has been building the program slowly, but time is running out. I am really impressed with the quality recruits Jones has talked into transferring from big time programs to UNT, plus some good local recruits, aka Mangrum. I think we need to give him one more season to see if this team comes together. I really wish Kendrick had one more year! This season we have a bunch of new starters as well as bench players. They are playing like a team that hasn't played together before. Throw in the Davis meltdown, and you have a team struggling to play consistently. Moreover, I think the turnover problem has more to do with our teams overwhelming desire to win....I actually say this as a negative. IMO, they are so worried about making mistakes they get rigid in their ball handling/passing/shooting. When player stops using his instincts and over thinks things, he loses his automatic ball handling skills. This results in poor decision making, losing control of the basketball, missing easy shots, etc. The best example of this is our first half play in most of our games. We come out over eager, forcing things, over thinking things... basically making the game hard on ourselves and making stupid errors. Second half starts... they come out more relaxed and settled down, and we play worlds differently.
-
Going in down 19 at the half. It could have been muuuch worse. They are fighting back but they will have to have a spectacular 2nd half to make this game.
-
It will take a miracle to pull this one off. We are to far behind, can't score to save our lives, and are making a ton of turn overs. This one is going to be embarrassing.

turn over, after turn over... ugly.
