I'm guessing it has to do with the narcissism of their fanbase. If they are chosen to join the Big 12, even an imploding Big 12, it is some kind of validation of how they see themselves as a highly regarded university and athletics program.

Seems that SMU's campaign to move to the Big 12 has taken a new turn. SMU fans are at ESPN GameDay at Cowboys Stadium holding up signs that say "SMU Ready to Go," Another couple of signs have the Pony logo with "BCS" written across the horse.

There may not even be a Big 12 to which SMU will be invited. The scarier scenario is that the Big 12 implodes and C-USA invites Baylor and Texas Tech.

I don't care what sport it is... I love beating SMU.

I'm not sure that helps us. If the Big 12 falls apart, teams like Tech, Baylor, OK State, and Missouri are going to be prime candidates for conferences like C-USA and MWC to expand with some historically big time schools. Sure, some of them will go Big East or Big 10+2 or even Pac-12+2, but there simply aren't enough teams to go around with these super conferences forming. The BCS bottom feeders may end up taking spots in mid-major conferences.

If OU is looking to bolt, you know Texas is as well. The question is, will they go with OU or A&M?
