OK, lots of things wrong with this article....
first, Title IX does not "guarantee gender equality in collegiate athletics." It requires schools to provide equal opportunities. Semantics, but poor writing here.
" If UNT were to add a baseball team, steps to qualify would include creating more spots for female athletes to participate in by expanding teams or adding another women's sport to the athletic program."
"Qualify" for... what exactly? Again, there seems to be some misunderstanding on Title IX. It's not something for which you "qualify."
We have four men's sports - football, basketball, golf, and track.
We have seven women's sports - basketball, golf, track, volleyball, soccer, tennis, and swimming/diving.
What's the problem? It seems to me that women have a greater variety to compete in athletics at UNT. There is no men's soccer, or swimming, or baseball, or tennis. The only issue would be the possibility that the number of scholarships lean towards the men's side due to the size of the football team, but Title IX does not require equal scholarships.
We have ranked so high in Title IX in previous reviews that it is far, far from the problem here.
