  1. I just read that the Fry Street Fair is moving to Deep Ellum in Dallas!? Now I have never attended this festival because it isn't really my type of scene, but didn't this bring alot to the Denton economy? I know they have had some problems over the years, but is this another case of Denton running off something that could benefit the town? Just wondering
  2. Tim MacMahon: Sun Belt sees star-crossed season ending 03/10/2003 Tim MacMahon BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — This was supposed to be the season the Sun Belt broke its streak of being a one-bid league. So said Louisiana-Lafayette coach Jesse Evans at the league’s preseason media days, the implication being his Ragin’ Cajuns and two-time defending champ Western Kentucky would both be good enough to earn an at-large invite to the Big Dance. Imagine Evans’ embarrassment in having to explain the his team’s immediate exit from the Sun Belt Tournament, the result of Denver’s upset of the West’s top seed Saturday. "Rustiness was definitely a factor," Evans said, referring to the long layoff his team had because of its first-round bye. Funny, the rest of the Sun Belt’s No. 1 seeds over the last 20 years somehow overcame the lengthy rest to win at least one game. But it’s fitting that the Ragin’ Cajuns ruined the possibility of a rematch of last season’s title game with Western Kentucky — this time in the Hilltoppers’ house. This season certainly hasn’t unfolded as planned for the Sun Belt. Louisiana-Lafayette’s 20-win campaign is symbolic of the season as a whole for the Sun Belt. There are plenty of positives to point to, but there is a strong sense of letdown. The league’s Sagarin rating (14) and RPI (15) are better than last season’s. But with Western Kentucky ranked in the preseason and nine teams returning at least four starters, the Sun Belt expected to create a significant buzz in early March. The league hasn’t, however, done anything to distinguish itself from other middle-of-the-road mid-major leagues. "We made a good year out of what could be a great year," Sun Belt commissioner Wright Waters said. There were several preseason signs that the Sun Belt would be star-crossed this season. Western Kentucky star center Chris Marcus wasn’t recovered from the ankle injury that led him to withdraw from the NBA Draft. He ended up limping through limited minutes in four December games before heeding the advice of doctors to shut it down for a while. (To make matters worse, junior forward/center Todor Pandov suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Hilltoppers’ season-opening loss at top-ranked Arizona.) Some of the best players on two of the league’s better teams — center Michael Southall of Louisiana-Lafayette and forward James Moore and center Chris Jackson of New Mexico State — were ineligible until the second semester because of grades. Florida International forward Taurance Johnson, a budding star like Southall, was suspended and eventually dismissed from the team. And sadly, other stars joined Marcus as seniors whose college careers ended on tragic notes. North Texas swingman Chris Davis narrowly missed becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer, as he suffered through the Mean Green’s collapse after running mate Leonard Hopkins went down with a broken foot. New Orleans forward Hector Romero, the league’s reigning player of the year, tore his ACL and was forced to watch the last couple of weeks from the bench. With its top competition eliminated, it would be anti-climactic to watch Western Kentucky win its third consecutive Sun Belt Tournament title. But that’s exactly what the league needs. The Hilltoppers, who have a nation-long 37-game home winning streak, will sell out E.A. Diddle Arena, making a very positive impact on the Sun Belt’s image to a nationwide TV audience. Western Kentucky, which has managed to win 22 games in a season that has disappointed its diehards, is also the only team in the league that has a legitimate shot to be a tourney sleeper. But the Hilltoppers, a smallish team that could use a boost of athleticism, won’t be going anywhere in my brackets. Assuming its one and done in the Big Dance, the Sun Belt certainly shouldn’t be ashamed of its season. It just would have been nice to take a big step forward.
  3. Thank you for being a class individual, an exceptional ball player, and for representing the University of North Texas with class and dignity. I wish you well in the future.
  4. I sure hated to see the Ladie Eagles lose, but our future really looks great with the players coming back and the freshman that will be added to the team next year.
  5. I know it was posted that this is on I35 just south of town, but are there any better directions? Such as what exit off of I35, cross streets, etc... I am guessing by the name that they serve the standard burgers, steaks, chicken, etc...
  6. Yes Ma'am!
  7. We all need to visit the Texas Roadhouse and express our thanks and support this business.
  8. Great news! You keep recruiting young ladies like this, and UNT won't be viewed as a new/infant program for long.
  9. They have actually bought Denton Community Hospital, so it will be in DCH's location on Bonnie Brae. The new hospital will be Presbytarian Hospital Denton.
  10. Click on the link below, and then click on the picture of the girl in the top lefthand corner. She is their "ticketchick" for March and gives UNT props. An LSU grad I work with pointed this out to me. Click Here
  11. I had the opportunity to meet Summer Sanders about 2 years ago. Believe it or not, she is better looking in person than on TV and was very nice.
  12. It's very simple. Putting the upper classmen and women in the new dorms opens up space in the dorms closer to campus for the incoming freshmen. All they are doing is moving bodies.
  13. I hope the win against NMSU carries over. This team has shown the telltale signs of being young by beating some good teams, NMSU, competing with some good teams, WKU, but losing to some bad teams ULL.
  14. Daniela Hantuchova Dara Torres Jamie Sale Jenny Finch
  15. How did CD play?
  16. This would drive me absolutely crazy if she was my player.
  17. Track & field: N. Texas seeks indoor success 03/01/2003 By Tim MacMahon / Staff Writer The North Texas men’s track team has earned plenty of hardware recently, winning the two of the last three outdoor titles. The women want some glory, too. UNT’s women are picked by the conference’s coaches to repeat last season’s runner-up finish at the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are being held this weekend in Jonesboro, Ark. "We hope this is our year," said Rick Watkins, UNT’s director of track and field. "We were second at this meet last year, and we feel like we have more depth and talent." The UNT men are predicted in the coaches’ poll to finish third. "Our goal is to be in the top four," Watkins said. "From there, anything can happen. But the guys have to be at their absolute best." Middle Tennessee, which has won the last two men’s and women’s indoor titles, is picked to defend both titles. The strength of the UNT women is in the sprints and field events. Senior Ananka Clark has the Sun Belt’s best time this season in the 60 meters with a school-record 7.63 and is also a threat to win the 200. Senior Monica Coates is the defending league indoor champion in the 55 hurdles and has run the second-best time in the Sun Belt this season. Watkins said UNT could have four of the top eight finishers in the women’s high jump and shot put. Freshman Ciji Brooks has the best shot put (44-1) in the league this season, and Latrecia Taylor is the defending champion in the event. Jessica Shockley won the outdoor title in the high jump last spring, and freshman Diedra Wesley has the league’s best jump (5-6) this spring. The UNT men most likely to medal include pole vaulter Ryan Lancon, high jumper and triple jumper Jarrod Stone, shot putter Jerome Carrothers and Ryan product David Turner in the 400. 18. I'm confused MGNation. You question the 350 attendance figure that class84 throws out, but then you later admit you never saw them play. Why would you questioned that number is you weren't there?
  19. I bet the Cowboys wish they had UNT's depth at RB! When could we ever say we have more depth at any position than the Boys?
  20. I know part of this business is moving on to bigger and better, but I am would like to see RV finish what he has started here. Maybe things aren't moving as fast as he, and many of us, would like, but does that mean it is time to bail out? I hope this is just a rumor.
  21. I can see where he would get frustrated, but things are starting to change. I just don't see how this could be true. We finally have an administration in place that supports athletics, our football team is beginning to win more consistently and is recruiting better, we are gaining in recognition, and we are about to embark on a huge facility upgrade. I would hate to think that RV would let a few disgruntled "neighbors" and a few faculty members run him off. Maybe these faculty members should move along. It would save UNT $$$$ to bring in supportive, newer, and younger faculty members. If RV has chosen to leave, then he doesn't have the backbone I thiought he did. I hope this is wrong.
  22. This continues to be a typical year for a young team. Up and down. The good part is that they could get on a hot streak and make some noise in the SBC Tournament. The other good news about the Lady Eagle's is the future looks great.
  23. NT Daily Nice article on the assistant coaches. I hope this transfers to success on the court and in the recruiting battles.
