Posted by Cooley. Not sure what website he got this information from. Cooley and Buford Julep are two of the most connected posters in basketball circles. Looks like some needed size, although I hope we find and sign someone about 4 inches taller.

Here is a post from Cooley I found on the Mean and Green, Scottie's, board. You will notice this was dated February 23rd. I didn't add this to cause concern, but to show that Hines chose to sign with us over some percieved better schools.

NTSU, NFL defensive back and sports commentator Pat Putnam -
Intramural basketball heads to nationals Ashley Hyder Daily Reporter March 30, 2004 In the midst of the nationally televised NCAA tournament, a group of NT students will take part in a similar tournament, a first for NT intramural teams. This is the first time in school history that an NT intramural basketball team has gone to the national championship. Nova-Kane will be traveling to Florida on April 22 to play in a national tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports Arena. The three-day tournament will feature talent from all over the country. "It's almost no words to express how I felt," said Sheldon Tate, Fort Worth junior, who serves as both the coach and a player for the winning team. Nova-Kane has competed in a number of games to make it to nationals, including playing in tournaments at NT, the University of Houston and Texas Christian University. While this is the first time an NT team has progressed to this level in intramurals, Nova-Kane has been around for about five years. The concept of Nova-Kane is attributed to Tranell Walker, an NT student who is now paralyzed. "It's like when you go to the dentist, and they inject you with novacane. You don't feel the effects at first, but wait long enough and it will kick in," said Tate. "That's our approach with others teams, we eventually wear them down." Other team members are also excited about the tournament. "This is my first trip to Florida, so I'm really excited," said Obi Ezem, Dallas freshman. Marcus Levels, Fort Worth junior, said he expects the team to do well because it has good chemistry and knows how to work together. "Nobody's selfish and no one's out for themselves," Levels said. "We are all about winning."

Softball: UNT looks to build on solid play in tourney Mean Green to face Prairie View A&M in finale of home stand 08:31 AM CST on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 By Brett Vito / Staff Writer North Texas softball coach Stacey Segal said all along that the Mean Green’s tough non-conference schedule would pay off eventually. UNT is hoping the time has finally arrived. Stacy Segal The Mean Green (13-36) won five straight games over the weekend to win the Mean Green/Wells Fargo Classic tournament title. The streak is one UNT will look to build on today when it takes on Prairie View A&M in a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader at Denia Park. The series will cap an 11-game home stand and serve as one of UNT’s final tune-ups for the beginning of Sun Belt Conference play. The Mean Green will face Florida International in a four-game series to kick off league play beginning April 10. "I hope that we are just starting to peak," Segal said. "We are hitting the ball and getting good performances from both of our pitchers." Katy Maxey was especially effective over the weekend for UNT. The freshman picked up three wins, including two against New Mexico. Maxey was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Pitcher of the Week for her performance. What was even more encouraging for the Mean Green was its performance offensively. UNT hit .339 in the tournament, a vast improvement over its .200 team batting average entering the event. First baseman Heather Bostic hit .500 for the weekend and is in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak. The freshman is just one of several players in UNT’s lineup who posted solid weekends. The Mean Green scored 36 runs in the last five games of the tournament, including a season-high 11 in a win over Northern Colorado. UNT struggled to find its rhythm early in the season when it faced a series of prominent teams from major conferences. The Mean Green will face 10 teams currently ranked in the ESPN/USA Softball Top 25 poll by the end of its first season since 1988. UNT is hoping its schedule will continue to pay off when it faces Prairie View (14-15). Catcher Kimberly Fernandez and center fielder Kimberly Hayden lead the Lady Panthers. The pair is tied for the lead in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with 19 RBI each. BRETT VITO can be reached at 940-566-6870.

I'll take FFR's stance on this and state that if we start consistently winning, then the fans will come. They came in the 70's when we won and will return. Why play the game if winning a conference chamionship isn't the goal. Anything besides this is not acceptable in my book.

This seems like a contradiction. Wouldn't "turning our ship around" mean winning conference and being competitive with the locals (SMU and TCU)?

I emailed RV and here is his response. John, The men's gym has lines going in every direction and would be a bad venue by today's standards. We are only going to play three games at the most at TWU. This is being done so that all 11 teams can participate instead of just eight. So most of the tournament will be at the Super Pit. Thanks for your concern and I look forwark to seeing you soon. From the official website: Maxey Named To All-Tournament Team FRESNO, CA (3/15/04)- North Texas freshman pitcher Katy Maxey was named to the 2004 Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic All-Tournament Team. North Texas (7-31) went 0-6 in the Fresno tournament, while facing three nationally-ranked teams. Maxey started all six contests in the tournament for the Mean Green, posting an ERA of 3.86. In the 1-0 loss to San Diego State, the freshman gave up only two hits and one unearned run in seven innings of work. Against Long Beach State, the Katy, TX native spread out seven hits over six innings, giving up only run in the 1-0 loss. She has started 26 games, including the last 18 straight. She is second on the team with 22 hits and five doubles. North Texas finishes up its 18-game road trip with a non-tournament doubleheader against Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, March 16. The first pitch is at 3 pm.
