Here's the truth behind those numbers: GMG.com
-
I don't have the total number of goals the soccer team has scored this year, but I would put money on it that they out-score the FB team this year. Fire DD, hire Hedlund.
-
Is that Mack Brown's job, to just sell it to the HS folks? Then why does he waste his time talking to the UT faithful and building up the program? If it is not the coach's job then why does UTEP pay Price and incentive for attendance? DD's negative comments have a negative impact on RV's efforts. It would be the equivalent of DD bringing in recruits and RV badmouthing everything to these kids.
-
Our gameplan has been the same for the last 4 years. Run, run, run. It doesn't matter if there are 8 or 9 defenders in the box, DD is going to run it at them. As DD says about every game, the plan is to keep it close and hopefully we'll pull out a win in the fourth quarter. In game adjustments? As you stated, "I didn't say they were the right adjustments." I have sat in the stands for many a game and heard more than one person correctly call the next play. Adjustments in the passing game? If we aren't throwing the play action roll out out pattern to the tight end, then we are heaving a downfield prayer with the hopes that JQ will go up and get it. Well, he did add the dump to Cobbs out of the backfield this year. DD led us all to believe that we would see Cobbs and Thomas in the same backfield this year, but I don't think he has the creativity to do it. Selling the program isn't also the coach's job? Tell that to Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Mack Brown, Franchione, etc... They go out and speak to their alumni groups in the off-season and sell the program. Meyer was known for creating huge student support at Utah. I know this is also RV's job, and I think he is doing a fine job, but when DD goes on ESPN radio prior to the UT game last year and badmouths the support of this program, facilities, etc... he does more harm than good. You can't tell me that a coach doesn't sell the program. You would have to have your head in the sand to not hear DD always comment on having to overcome so much more at poor little old North Texas because our fans don't support the program, our facilities don't match up, etc.... The ESPN radio interview last year prior to the UT game comes to mind.

Med, I have been a faithful follower and typically pretty positive fan for I don't know how long. I'm not trying to get into a pissing match, but I just don't think we need to hire a man that was fired a few years ago for doing drugs a couple of nights before the opening game of the season. He knew what he was doing, I guarantee you it wasn't the first time he's done it, and because of his decision to do this knowing what could happen if he got caught, he turned his back on his players for selfish reasons. I just don't want us to be affiliated with a HC that is a convicted drug user. Should he get a second chance as a coach? Sure. As a HC of a D1 school? IMHO, I don't think so and definitely not at the school he was fired from. If you took the "credibility" comment wrong, I apologize. I just fear that NT is holding on to DD for too long and the result will be detrimental to the program.
-
Great. DD already has his excuse ready in the event NT doesn't win.

In reference to this post: GMG.com DD's 29 wins came against schools with a combined 118-222 record. Four teams were .500 or better and they include one D1-AA. I just wanted to reveal the truth behind some of the numbers. Has DD built an SBC winner? Yes Does the program have more national credibility now? Yes Does DD attract new fans and keep them? Maybe Are DD's teams disciplined? No Does DD make adjustments to his gameplan depending on talent, opponent, etc...? No Does DD make in-game adjustments? No Does DD bad mouth the fans, the facilities, etc...? Yes Does DD sell the program? No Like I have said many times before, DD seems like a good guy, but I don't think he is the coach to progress this program any further, and I fear that the BOR will hold on to him until the program starts a downward trend again. We can not afford a downward trend and this point.

Sloan as one of the best? I've your comparing golf scores, maybe.

I'll give med some credit. Let's go with the all-drugs coaching staff. HC: Kelvin Marting WR: Michael Irvin OL: Nate Newton RB: Bam Morris DC/LBers: Hollywood Henderson DL: Leon Lett
-
You can hire many good coaches for $220,000. That comment and the rest of you post has caused you to lose all credibility.

Mean Green Looking To Be More Physical
UNTLifer replied to MeanGreen61's topic in Mean Green Football
Our offensive line out-weighed Troy's d-line by 30lbs on average. Yes we need to get bigger, but other than Foster on the OL, we are okay. We need more size in our interior DLine. Chapman is fine at DE. -
I agree completely. Not so sure about the remainder of your post, but it would be fun to see if this would happen.

I am all for a strong BB program, but what do you all define as "the next level?" If you mean the next level of conference membership, then I am with you. If you are talking about elevating the entire athletic department, then I disagree. Take Duke for example. I view them as a power in basketball and don't really think about their football team except when FSU is hanging 60 on them. I believe a strong program will draw attention to the university just like a successful FB program will. Because of that, I am all for JJ building a power. I've never understood why the administration in the past put forth the effort to build a great facility like the Super Pit and then make bad hire after bad hire for a head coach after the Blakely era. I think this is the year for JJ to produce. You can't tell me that there aren't other coaches out there that wouldn't love a chance to lead North Texas. Great facility, great location and talent upon talent in the immediate area. Is it our saving grace? I don't think so. I would much rather see us strive for excellence in all sports and all academic areas.

Baseball Playoffs

It's not that I'm not a BoSox fan, I'm just tired of the BoSox fans. The media pulls for Boston and NY so hard it makes me sick. I would just like to see someone else win it. Nothing makes me happier than a pissed off George Steinbrenner spending $200 million on a team that can't make it to the Series. -

Where is this bus heading? SunBelt or beyond?
UNTLifer replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
Kind of like A&M did last year? We should dominate all of these games. If we don't, then we lose (or is it "loose") respect. -
Baseball Playoffs
UNTLifer replied to Coffee and TV's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
Amen! Any team except the Red Sox and Yankees. I'll pull for the Astros since I now live down here, plus I can't stand LaRussa. -
Please tell me when, during the past four years, NT's played Nebraska and Kansas and when Kansas or Baylor were ranked in the Top 50?

I bleed green and always will.

The exact problems I have with DD illustrated. I will not discredit the conference winning streak, what the wins have done for program recognition, etc... This is beyond me and pisses me off. My problems: Lack of discipline: Ex. Player gets a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and his patted on the butt or on top of the head. Not Gaining Fan Support: Badmouthing the fans in the media, example above of walking off the field, leaving the field in fall practice when it was marketed as a meet the team, etc... DD's "job security by the BOR" as lead to an appearance of "I don't care."
-
I agree with all of the replies that have been posted. I don't fault our players, and I applaud our coaching staff for the conference winning streak, bowl games, etc..., but I do fault DD for the various reasons I have stated in other posts and for: I also blame them for the fact that all of these people attended these games and were totally turned off by what they saw. Follow that up with DD's typical woe is me, woe is the program, the fans don't like us, etc... b.s. and you have a problem. Plus, I have a problem when the AD's hands are tied by the BOR to make decisions for the betterment of the program. Where there is smoke, there is fire, and there is a lot of smoke right now.

Harry, Your points are skewed. Plus, I have never downplayed our four conference titles, the four bowl games and what they have meant to our school and program. If I have, please point this out. I am going to respond to your post paragraph by paragraph. 1. I don't fault us being in the SBC. I am not blaming anyone for where we are, in fact, I applauded the admin for getting us in a conference with teams closer to home. 2. I have never downplayed our SBC titles. We haven't won 4 bowl games, we've won one and got beat bad in two of them and played Memphis relatively close. Please don't compare DD and Fry. They were from different eras. Look at the number of bowl games that are available now as opposed to the 70's. Fry didn't have the conference tie-in, and I would argue that NT would not have played in any bowls during the Dickey era if it weren't for the SBC creating the New Orleans Bowl. Also, don't compare recruiting. In the Fry era, teams had a scholarship limit of around 105 and this wasn't really monitored. Now the limit is 85, 20 less than when Fry was recruiting against the SWC. I would say DD recruiting against the BcS with 20 less scholarships to offer is equivalent to Fry recruiting against the SWC with 20 more scholarships. At best it is a wash. Average I-AA program? Seems to me we were ranked in the Top 10 in I-AA and advanced to the playoffs a couple of times. 3. Yes, we are young. Again, my main complaint of DD is his lack of discipline, no creativity in the game plan, bad mouthing the fans, facilities, etc..., no in-game adjustments and a team that looks lifeless at times. 4. I will never give up on this team and I never claimed to be doing so. Again, this post was to reveal the truth behind the numbers when people throw out that DD is 29-21 over the last four years. 5. Many other mid-majors that have success successfully recruit for both lines. I know this position is a premium and we have experience along the OL this year, which makes me question the coaching. Our OL coach hasn't really produced for many winners in the past. 6. Agree 7. Agree, but I would like for the coach and his team to appear to be fired up to play. 8. The problem with those losses is that we should have never lost in the manner we did. We were totally inept against Tulsa and the offense couldn't do a thing against Troy until the end. I don't blame 18 to 22 year olds for this. I didn't see a noticable difference in talent. Again, my point was to reveal the truth behind DD's 29-21 record, nothing else. Harry, I've never had the pleasure to meet you, but I would guess that your relationship with the Athletic Department skews your point of view from time to time and that you must be careful what you write. I understand that. I'm not trying to get in an arguement with anyone, just wanted to throw the facts out there for discussion.

Sorry Stan, but I would argue that through RV's efforts we have seen an increase in season tickets, fan support, etc... The gameday event has as much to do with the increase as anything. When has DD gone out and sold the program other than the winning records the last few years? The point of my starting this thread was to reveal the truth behind the numbers. With our success in the SBC the last few years, why are other teams catching and passing us by?
