  1. It's seems we see fewer and fewer bands traveling to away games. It's all about budget. Most college marching bands just don't have the budget to make band trips. Some schools like A&M have a 500k endowment to fund band travel, others don't travel at all. Kansas State didn't make one band trip this year. Ones that can scrape together the money usually only schedule a few road trips per year and when they do they often are short trips that can done by bus without an overnight stay. Or to justify the exspense, they often mix in some recruiting and perform at a high school game on Friday night. When the do plan an extended road trip they dont always have hotel rooms. It's not uncommon for them rely on parents, friends of the band, alumni etc for places to stay. These people take in a few of the band kids and put them up in guest, coaches, even sleeping bags on the floor. My sister and her husband are band directors in the Houston area, they both tell stories of band trips where they slept in sleeping bags on a high school gym floor. Seems it's common practice to get an alumnus who is a high school band director to get permission to use the gym to put up the college band when needed.
  2. FYI, Mean Joe has been a coach for years. He's been an NFL assistant defensive coach for the Dolphins and Cardinals. Currenly he's a special assistant, i.e. scout for the Steelers.
  3. Close, attendacne was only 898
  4. How do they do it? By winning OOC games. Plain and simple.
  5. Prometheus? Sounds more like Sisyphos to me.
  6. We all screw up from time to time. He apologized for the mistake, I say we move on. It's not like he was arrested the night before a game for snorting coke in an topless bar. If we ever had a coach do that! well then .....uh wait...nevermind.
  7. Ok it's not football or UNT but this is good for a laugh. When going to view the online version of the Dallas Morning News sports section, a banner ad pops up on the top of the screen proclaming "The biggest sporting event of the year in Texas" What is thie event they are promoting?? The MLS Championship to be played at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco I know they keep trying to perpetuate the myth that soccer is a major league sport in this country.....but the biggest sporting event in Texas???? Thats a bit extreme. What about the NBA Finals? or the freaking WORLD SERIES? Does anybody think the MLS Championship is bigger than these???
  8. Only problem with that is that Hawaii was seized by coup by biz interents only to immediately become a US territory. Texas on the other hand was 'siezed' by biz interest in a revolution and operated as an independent nation for a decade. Texas was recognized by and diplomatic relations France and Great Brittan. But back to the original point- Texas was the only state that joined the union as an independent country, all other states including Hawaii joined the union as US territories.
  9. Not so with Hawaii- Hawaii was annexed as a US territory in 1898. It remained a US territory for anohter 61 years until it was admitted as a state in 1959. Texas on the other hand was annexed by treaty between two soverign nations. The US and Republic of Texas. Part of the annexation treat was Texas reserved the right to divide itself into 5 seperate states if it ever wanted and also Texas would retain ownership of its public lands rather than ceding them to the federal government which was done with all other territories/states. (In order to settle it's national debt Texas did sell a significant part of its public land to the US government. That land is what is today parts of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and Wyoming.)
  10. Coming from The Colony, I'd go north FM 423/Main St all the way up to Hwy 380, then head west into Denton. Once you get to Denton I'd recommend turning north on Loop 288 and heading over to 35 rather than staying on HWY 389/University or turning south on 288.
  11. maybe it has something to do with Baton Rouge?? How many times are we going to hear stories like this and keep chalking it up to a "random fan" or "a few bad apples" ??????
  12. Laura Miller and Rick Perry??? Rudy do you REALLY want to hold those two up as good examples of texas political leadership????
  13. "In fact, on Nov. 5 we will have a NASCAR Simulator out there for NASCAR Day along with a few cars. You need to come out to a game and check out the Walnut Grove area because I believe you will have a great time and enjoy the atmosphere."..... Nov. 5th???? How in heck is MTSU having a NASCAR DAY then when we have the whole freakin NASCAR nation just a few miles down the road on Nov 5th??? Why can't we get this kind of cross promotion? Another missed opportunity.
  14. That is my original point, you have to wait to see how it all plays out when the season is over. Your formula to find the average ranking is using the current rankings of Fla St. and Miami, If you want to take an average of opponents rankings, wait till after the games are done.
  15. By my count I see Texas playing more ranked teams in the than either Va Tech or Alabama. Texas plays 5 games against ranked team. Va Tech and Alabama each play 4 respectively. There is a problem with you logic on this formula Emmit. You are using today's rankings. You have to consider the rankings of the teams at the time they were played. At the time Texas played them Ohio State was a top 5 team. Texas Tech was #7 in the BCS, Oklahoma and Colorado were top 20 teams. Of course using today's ranking is going to skew the average ranking lower because each of these teams now have a loss to Texas which contribute to a their lower ranking. Conversely, Alabama and Va Tech have yet to play two of their highest ranked opponents. Take Miami and Florida St. for example. Both of these teams would not have as high a ranking as they do today if they had a loss to Va Tech on their records. If you took an average of the rankings after a loss, I think you would see both Va Tech and Alabama "average" dropping. Right now, Texas has already played its ranked opponents. YTD Texas has had a tougher schedule than Alabama or Va Tech. Texas has already played and beaten 4 ranked opponents. Va Tech has only played 2, Alabama 1. Let's wait till the end of the season before we start bemoaning the unfairness of the BCS. Va Tech and Bama still have their toughest games of the season to play.
  16. Denton, TX (AP) - A seven-year-old boy was at the center of a courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible. The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him. After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him. After two recesses to check legal references and confer with CPS officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Univeristy of North Texas Mean Green football team whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.
  17. 5 to 7 people to rock the bus?? 5 to 7 people to even stop a bus? Since it was only 5 to 7 people, why was it so hard for for the police to pick out one drunk guy from the next? Sorry I don't buy it. Oh I guess since they only cracked the windshield instead of breaking it makes the bottle throwing ok then? You're gracious in your invitation but I would stop wasting you time trying to defend this kind of stuff. You said it yourself...." it was the first time in about a month for louisiana people to finally kick back and drink alittle they lost control and possibly alot of built up frusration was vented on that bus" I think thats indicative of the culture down there. Why try to excuse the behavior?? These fans know that type of behaviour is overlooked, tolerated and even pointed to with pride by some. They know the administration isn't going to do anything serious to stop it. It's whay LSU has this reputation. They don't seemed to be too concerned with correcting it. Face it Cripp, you may love your Tigers. Good for you. But LSU has a problem. You don't get this kind of reputation based on isolated incidents and internet rumors.
  18. If you going to quote someone, at least get it right. Chuck Heston's quote in front of the NRA convention was holding his rifle above his head, " FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!!"
  19. Is this still the plan? Hadn't seen anything more about it?
  20. Shoebox full of Twenty's ? That would get me there
  21. Actually Houston isn't the 4th biggest market. Houston ranks as a 10th as a TV market, 7th in radio. FYI- DFW is #7 TV, #5 in radio.
  22. Since the university has somebody on salary to monitor this board, I'm worried they will chalk up any pro-athletics comment as just the GMG'ers trying to stuff the ballot box
  23. I'm planning on leaving Saturday morning, will be staying at the Holiday Inn Saturday night.
  24. If we had ANY kind of offense I think we would have a decent chance of beating LaTech but Meager & Co. have been so anemic I won't be surprised to see us get shut out. Eight turnovers and only 13 points????, against FI freakin U??!!!! Things are worse than I thougt. I haven't seen our offense this bad since the dark days in the mid-90's.
  25. You'd here differently from Dale, His daughter graduated from UNT, The father of his grandchild is a former football player at UNT. Besides, Hanson wasn't even working Saturday night. Your complaint would be with George Riba. He did the broadcast on Saturday.
