Well, COBA did fumble away most of a $10M donation a few years back and blamed in on 9/11? Does that count?

Except that Leach is an idiot and schools like A&M and Virginia Tech have every right to stand on their military traditions (seriously, read the service records or just go to the military appreciation game if UNT is not playing) even as things have changed. Leach has created a cult of personality around himself that will be funny to watch flounder when he leaves Tech. The classy Tech of Dikes and all the others has been traded in for a wannabe safety school that thinks if it pumps everything it has into football it will rule Texas with an iron fist. There may not be a formal tie to the military, but just basic research shows how integrated a role they have played alongside the academies and in each major war. A&M insisting it is not a rivalry is half the rivalry (just like SMU does with us, Texas does with A&M, Cowboys do with Philly, etc.) The problem is that (like some of us with SMU), Tech plays right into their hands and stomps and pouts even louder trying to be noticed. Having had a chance to be around older Tech alums along with my wife's brother-in-law who was a class valedictorian there in the 90s, they do not hide that they are embarrassed about what Tech spirit has now become.

NFL – My primary team is the Cowboys and has been since I moved here and then started becoming aware of sports. My problem is that there is so muh I dislike about most Cowboys fans that I end up having a torn allegiance whre the apocalypse around the losses is funny enough to make up for the disappointment. I root hard and swear at the TV every week, but the second it’s done, I’m okay again. As I stated in the other thread, my secondary team is the Falcons. My brother and I finally got see them again in 2005 as an early Christmas gift when they played the Saints in SA and had a blast. Then they drafted Matt Ryan, which was a family moment. I’ll explain down the page. College- I get crap here because I have two degrees and spent 3 years at each school, but it is North Texas and A&M. UNT gets the majority of my interest and writing (as you can see from the blog), and I have a similar interest with A&M as I do with the Cowboys. I went into this season hoping for a combined 8 wins – and there’s still time! The rest of college is confusing because of my family. My parents went to BC and my dad played football there, so that was the childhood team to root for. In the 90s, the run of knocking off #1 Notred Dame in football and #1 UNC led to some wonderful family moments that still stay with me. The only reason I did not go there was fear of leaving home/stupid high school girlfriend, but I still root for them. I also have a sister, brother-in-law and brother who went to Auburn, so I root for them to win, but don’t really structure my life or get affected either way regardless. My wife went to Texas and puts up with a ton in regard to NT, the blog and this board, so I try to be supportive there too. Before you mock me, imagine if your significant other was running around as a gay troll character on the internet for a few hours a day… the problem is that I still have years of wanting Texas to lose to unprogram, but such is love. I also laugh at people who let college sports really affect their mood (maybe it’s all the losing I’ve followed), but to me it is more about having fun and seeing a good effort from the coaches and kids than bottom line results. If we were busting our asses with great schemes and improving (like SMU is), I’d have no complaints this year. MLB – Rangers. I have a Red Sox soft spot, but don’t think I have a leg to try and really claim it, so I don’t really get out in front of that one. The Rangers occupy a ton of my time and analysis and I read the Newberg Report and other sources like a bible. Tasty and I even went to the “Meet Jon Daniels” night and learned all about the farm system together. It was magical. For me. NHL – Stars. This is my strongest pro-allegiance. Hockey has been a priority rooting interest of my family and my brother and I buy playoff tickets to every game each year. It was expensive last year, but we even had a flight on hold to go to Detroit if there had been a Game 7. For me, nothing matches it. The Bruins are a secondary team that I like watching play, but it is pretty much a Stars extravaganza for me. NBA – Mavs. It was my first NBA experience and I remember all the tickets they used to beg students to take in area elementary schools back in the day. I also wonder what ever happened to my Mashburn jersey.

So who on that list started baseball five years ago and had success? How long did it take them to get to where they are now? If you are arguing that we can win quickly because of talent, that is your stretch, but there really is no debate about the money behind it. If we had no other issues and extra money to spare, I would be leading the baseball parade, but it doesn't make sense. I am not even talking about winning a title, I am talking about postseason play of any type. The only example I can think of is DBU and, without looking it up, I think it is safe to say that they are not making money or setting attendance records. -

I've got New England parents and a dad who played football at BC - where he met my mom - but I try to ease up on claiming any of it as much as I used to because liking Boston got so fashionable after 2004. I follow the Bruins as my second hockey Eastern Conference team, but don't feel anything for the other two. I was born after we had moved to Atlanta, so I have a weird Falcons secondary team love as well (and a brother who never stopped liking them and a grandfather who died during the 1998 Super Bowl, making strong associations both ways with them impossible.) So yeah, go Matt Ryan. -
A Sun Belt ref tried to do it, but he missed the tackle and blew out his shoulder when he landed funny.

I would like to see how many college baseball teams make a profit - specifically, are there any that make a profit without having a large, successful athletic department propping them up? In theory, schools like Wichita State and the Cal system schools should make money as well. Do they? Do you think the team would be supported while it struggles to win? Is Dallas about to start filling games at DBU for their post season appearance? Is Rusty Greer a good managerial choice, or a white guy who can hustle and won the hearts of millions of Rangers fans for playing the game "the right way?" Deion Sanders asked to be our head football coach a few years ago and he was pretty successful, do you want him leading football? Was his appearance managing Team Hardline at the charity game last year a hard sell for you? If you want a player who has proven he can manage and play and then manage again, why not go with Gabe Kapler? There are a ton of good baseball people all over the place to ask, and I have grown a little sour of giving big local names big training opportunities. I love me some baseball - but I just don't see why it should be a priority right now. The plenty of talent in the backyard comment is true, but also sadly funny when you consider how we are doing in football in the same situation. EDIT: Forgot Rusty hired on a Texas Wesleyan over the summer. Maybe we can see how he does as a bench coach out there and then have this discussion about the sport we don't have. -

I take it you don't want to look up the numbers or see how many teams actually turn a profit without postseason play, which we would likely not see for the near-term after it launches. I'm not advocating for either of the other sports you mentioned either. The at least 40% was a bold number though - because I was under the impression we'd just pack our bags and be a traveling team and not use the hypothetical new stadium at all. -

Fun game if you're bored: I've been able to convince 4 people that the guy on the left in thefirst picture is William Hung celebrating on the field ala Jimmy Fallon: http://deadspin.com/5065765/the-times-they-are-a+changin How many can you get? -
I like that I can post an article without any commentary thinking people might talk about it. I guess we assume every link has an implied agenda, but I wanted to see someone discuss the article's point, not blow more hot air. I've still yet to make up my mind in this election and am leaning towards what will most likely be the losing side, but the complete inability to have a real discussion anymore about any of these issues is just god awful. Yes - voter fraud is horrible but the point of the article that interested me is that this is being used as a scare tactic and it may not be a reasonable threat because of the other checks in the system. i'm interested in knowing if this is a credible threat or a desperate and perhaps slightly underhanded last gasp by the GOP in an election and race that has largely disappointed me after I stupidly expected more from both sides. I guess trying to get that here was like pissing on a rose and expecting it to grow.

Yes. In our case, you are looking at what sports we can add that will cost the least - baseball is weekly travel plus lodging for series in most cases. We've gone over this so many freaking times, but if you question it, look up how many programs make money on baseball when you have a second. -
Sorry - I was sarcastically criticizing us, not you. Know any good professors at your school with a passion for Troy football?
