Regarding ASU's final play. Only one receiver was sent to the end zone the rest were running routes along the sidelines to get in position to make a catch and get out of bounds to set-up a tying FG. Our fastest receiver was the one in the end zone and as Leonard broke away from the rush Tompkins just out ran the defender crossing the end zone to be wide open. If the UNT pressure had caused Leonard to roll to his right instead of his left the defender has a chance to make up the ground and have a shot to break-up the play It was just one of those plays that happen. Everyone was covered well initially but a fast receiver can't be covered forever.

ASU has played one good game since the start of October, a total rout of ULL. We've been staggering around punch drunk ever since the 29 points in 16 minutes comeback against Memphis. We've got a great September offensive coordinator who should be sending out resumes in December.

Third win of the season for ASU when trailing at half. Now 16-5 all time under Roberts in games determined by one score. UNT put together a good package for the night but ASU is tough to kill at home.

Should also be available on ESPN360 for ATT and Verizon internet customers.

Here's A Controversial Topic For This Board
Arkstfan replied to the real grad88's topic in Mean Green Football
Don't forget that OU at one point held a 24-7 lead over CU. Colorado scored a FG after holding OU to 4 play 18 yard drive and a punt to make it 24-10. OU was intercepted on its next possession and CU drove for a TD to make it 24-17. Next OU possession was plays 12 yards and punt. CU missed a FG. Next possession one play and an interception setting up an CU touchdown drive. OU drives 3 yards on three plays and CU gets a 25 yard punt return for a net 14 yard punt setting up the winning field goal. CU didn't dominate OU and if OU had taken care of the ball and moved the chains in the late 3rd quarter and in the fourth, OU wins. -

A few years ago someone posted an article here about the dearth of college caliber receivers and QB's in Texas in proportion to the amount of talent turned out the Texas High School and discussed that heavy use of the wishbone was the cause. Here in Arkansas a few years ago the state association approved spring drills for the first time and more importantly removed a lot of the limits on 7 on 7 football. Well practicing the run game out of 7 on 7 isn't that great of a set-up. Practicing a pass intense offense though... 7 on 7 is made for it. You get a ton of reps with little risk of injury due to limited or no contact rules for 7 on 7. The serious high schools will go to at least one 7 on 7 camp or tournament over the summer and some will go to as many as four. You can't work that intensely on the ground game so we are developing high school players who get zillions of reps in passing situations and few in rushing situations. -

There is no question that the best spread teams can run. Florida is 18th in rushing offense, West Virginia 3rd, Louisville 24, Boise 29, Tulsa 39th But look at the teams that can run but can't pass. ULL 9th in rushing 107th in passing ULM 17th in rushing 117 passing Arkansas 1st in rushing 97th in passing Being a one-trick pony won't elevate you to the top in the nation, see Texas Tech and Hawaii. In both cases superior talent still beats them they just destroy inferior talent. But 25 years ago if you were a great running team that didn't pass well you could find significant success but a team that passed great and couldn't run generally didn't perform well. That's been flipped. The best teams can still run effectively but having a dominating ground game is not nearly as vital as it once was. -

ASU added some hurry up no huddle this year. We became the first Sun Belt team to score more than 10 on Texas and the first to score three times against them and by moving the ball it allowed us to be the first to hold them under 27. It let us become the first Sun Belt opponent to score more than field goal on Tennessee set the stage to score 22 of the 29 points scored against Memphis in under 16 minutes. -
Four teams with a zero in the win column will do that.

Glad someone has had a positive experience at Fayetteville.

I've not the first clue what Todd Dodge's logic is. I do know what I watched ASU do last year. Coming out of spring last year I kept hearing, "That red-shirt freshman Corey Leonard is the real deal, he'll be the starter". Fall rolls around Travis Hewitt is the starter but Leonard was seeing action. Leonard ended up with a few starts but they would use a quick hook to get him out whenever he struggled. Fans were going ape-poo over the fact he wasn't playing full time. Now a year later Corey Leonard has played the whole season except one play at Texas, a drive or two at the end of the Tennessee game, and the final possession against SMU. He is now a confident team leader, he's 26th in the nation in total offense, and Arkansas Sports 360 put him on the cover this month's issue asking if he was the best college QB in the state. Barring a miracle finish to this season you go into next year with only red-shirt seniors who have been part of a winning team at UNT. Throwing guys to the wolves isn't always the best way to develop them for the future.

Drake is non-scholarship and wouldn't count toward bowl eligibility or the NCAA minimum scheduling requirements.
-
Not true. The NCAA only required they give up football for a year and then play all road games the next year (which they elected to not do by not playing any games).
-
Boise has rarely gone after the top teams from the rich six leagues. They like to nibble around the middle and bottom.
-
Yes, many people demonstrated their support by failing to renew their season tickets to speak out about the unfairness of him not getting yet another contract extension.
-
I was expecting to read that you wanting to take a page from Marshall where they quadrupled the normal crowd for the coach's radio show at a local restaurant when a group showed up wearing "I Believe" buttons or from ASU where our fans held a tailgate party of a practice and hung a banner reading "We Believe" during one of Roberts early slumps.

Asu Adds Penn St. And Nebraska To Future Schedules
Arkstfan replied to NT80's topic in Mean Green Football
Yes SMU was home/home. Memphis wanted to do a 3 for 1 with ASU and we told them our price for the two unreturned games. Then they offered 2 for 1 and again we told them our price and they broke off negotiations. Few weeks later they call back and we sign a 2 for 2. -
Asu Adds Penn St. And Nebraska To Future Schedules

$850,000 ain't unheard of now. This is a very good trend. Let's say you are Kansas and draw around 40,000 a game at an average of $30 (figuring student discounts, comps, group discounts, etc). You gross around $1.2 million for a home game. If the Sun Belt/MAC/WAC schools won't come to your place for less than $700,000 you are paying over 58% of your gate just to get an opponent. Now you can always schedule an FCS school for $300,000 to $400,00 but that leaves you with 3 dates to fill. Your choices are: 1. Go home/home with a similarly financially challenged SEC, Big East, Big 10, Pac-10, ACC school. Problem is your odds of winning on the road aren't good and you get a tough home opponent. 2. Go home/home with a Sun Belt/MAC/WAC/MWC/CUSA school or if you can find it a 2 for 1 as long as the unreturned game doesn't cost you the full $700,000+. You run a greater risk of losing on the road but have an easier home game and the road game is going to be one of the more attractive games under the smaller conference TV package so you can get an extra TV exposure (I've heard that ESPN will at times pay a visitor as if the game was under their conference contract to encourage such games). 3. Just spend the money. Option 1 is indirectly good for us because it means that one of two schools that would have bought a win will lose on a date that used to be a rent-a-win date. Option 2 is directly good for us because we get home games to build our crowds and get a better shot at winning. Option 3 is good for us because we can get market rate to play a team that isn't so much more talented. -
Call Danny Nutt. He apparently needs a ticket.

How Do I Participate In A Chili Cook-off?
Arkstfan replied to infuryum's topic in Mean Green Football
Cooker is no problem. Go to Wal-Mart or any sporting type store that stocks outdoor goods (ie. Gander Mt., Cabella, Bass Pro, camping stores, etc) and you'll find the perfect beginner set-up except it will be labeled turkey fryer or fish fryer. Main thing is you want portable heat with a flame that can be regulated. Check the rules of any contest you enter. Some do not permit ground meat. Beans, pasta, rice or such filler will knock you out automatically. Talk to the other cooks, tell 'em you are just starting out and 90% of them will give you great advice though they may also pull your leg with few pieces of advice by suggesting you repeat mistakes they've made. I've never done a cook-off but I've put a couple on and judged a few others. CASI has some helpful info http://www.chili.org/ -
Good luck on that. Peoria, IL has really turned around since I was up there the first time 22 years ago. Played my first round of golf at Detwiller (Sp?) nice flat city owned course on the Illinois River.

Huge Article On Smu's Death Penalty With Lead In And Article
Arkstfan replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
Went and looked it up. ULL was prohibited from playing any men's basketball games for two years, banned from post-season and television for four years and given four years probation. They actually got less than was suggested. The suggested penalty was expulsion from the NCAA. -
Huge Article On Smu's Death Penalty With Lead In And Article
Arkstfan replied to OldTimer's topic in Mean Green Football
ULL had gotten the death penalty in basketball about 10-15 years earlier (I think technically just took away all their basketball scholies) and they bounced back.
