Yes, that's always confused me about the SMU-to-P5 tale. The only thing SMU has going for it was the fact they were in the SWC decades ago. The big schools blew apart that conference and haven't looked back. Maybe now that SMU can legally pay players they can revert to a powerhouse, but here's some perspective: I'm in my 50s, and SMU hasn't been a power since my high school days. They bring nothing more to the table than any other mid-major G5 team.

Assuming a 2023 start, then this upcoming recruiting class is the start. We have to get a name coach that will inspire players to WANT to come here. That and lining up some sweet NIL deals for the guys who come here. Let's face it, with NIL and the transfer portal, there's essentially free agency in the NCAA

"P5" is a made up label as well.

Obviously we need a coach with P5 head coaching experience, preferably with a recent National Championship. Someone who would make a big splash in the media. I wonder who's available, or will be ready to un-retire in a few years that fits the bill?

I feel like Charlie Brown looking at that football held by Lucy. Remember when we were all so excited to join CUSA, only to have it not really be CUSA by the time we got there? Don't get me wrong, this is a -good- move (if true), but I don't trust our luck.

No coach with ambition is going to stay long-term at a G5 school if they are good enough to get the chance to move up.

Hey, I have a UNT Drumline jacket still hanging in the closet. I know the music folks are good. But that "North Texas is a Music School" perception (and promotion) has harmed the overall marketing of the school, and definitely was part of the fan malaise that has affected athletics since the 80s. Chicken and egg, who knows, but the schools that are well known big-time machines are FOCUSED on football in a way that North Texas has never been.

I hate trash-time scores. They give cover to the coaching staff and hide just how bad the game was.

I've been hearing that "music school" stuff since I first stepped foot on the NTSU campus. Maybe it's time that a single department of pink hairs quit defining the 6th largest school in Texas.
