"The Gophers were last in the nation in total defense, having one of the worst statistical years in recent F.B.S. history. The Countdown has already pointed out that North Texas and Rice, both spread teams, were among the worst defensive teams in the nation, and promised to look into the phenomenon. Minnesota also runs the spread, leading me to believe that there may be a connection." I don't know who the author, Paul Myerberg, is. He really doesn't like spread offenses, does he? Hopefully the return of the DeLoach defense will make him reconsider. Did anyone else notice that he didn't mention Gary DeLoach's return in the North Texas writeup? ...probably doesn't even know about it...

You're right. I couldn't come up with another "Owl" school - is it just me, or is it easy to forget about Temple? And it did say there would be two Owls in a row - so Rice-Temple or Temple-Rice.

Given that it was built in the mid-80s, I'd be surprised if there is any asbestos in it. Asbestos was identified as a health hazard well before then, I believe.

I'm going to do my best to get the Gulf Coast Chapter to host an event. Barring that, I'd love to have a GMG.com event.

Wrecking Ball!
NT Drummer replied to Cerebus's topic in The Eagles Nest (There Should be Pie For Everyone Forum)
The live webcam doesn't work for me, but this one does (thanks to 3XNTGRAD from the snow thread): Masters Hall/Life Sciences Cam It's the old Chemistry building, which apparently is (was) named Masters Hall. (using my best Johnny Carson imitation) I did not know that... -
"Note the dreaded Thanksgiving weekend home game (vs. Arkansas State Nov. 29) to end the season. UNT tried to move the game to a more favorable date for attendance, but to no avail." Ark St schedule from "2008 Schedules" thread So if we have an open date on Nov. 15, and so does Ark St, why can't we re-schedule the game for that date? Obviously we want to; does Ark St not want to? I will be there on Nov. 29th if it isn't rescheduled.

Rice made major improvements to their stadium in 2006, so it's not quite that bad any more: http://riceowls.cstv.com/facilities/rice-stadium.html "Fans can take in all these improvements while sitting on new aluminum bleachers which have seating for 47,000 fans. The end zone seating was removed and the area covered with blue tarps, but the capability remains to expand the seating to its original 70,000 configuration."

For the Rice game, I'm hoping the Gulf Coast chapter of the Exes will be able to work with the Athletic dept in sponsoring tailgating or some other event. Regardless, maybe those of us in the Houston area can arrange something for the gmg.com members who make it to the game - what do y'all think?

Hey, I bought a Raleigh bicycle at Denton Bicycle Center back in the early '80s when I was a student! So I guess I kinda know greenjoe. It's like "6 degrees of gmg.com". But to get back somewhat on topic - changing the stadium's name is a very Tech thing to do, isn't it? As for us, since we're building a new stadium, it's fine with me if it has a new name. Of course, we could have "Fouts Field" at "Texas Instruments Stadium" (my dream corporate donor!). Too bad DLP isn't the technology used for making jumbotrons...

Tcu: Part Of New Seating Construction Collapses
NT Drummer replied to GreenTiger_OriginalAcct's topic in Mean Green Football
There's a better picture on the Star-Telegram site: New seating at TCU stadium collapses It looks like seating that is part of end-zone suites. -
Long live the Rock Bottom Lounge (aka the RBL)! Brave Combo, Schwantz Lefantz, and lots of jazz played there. It stayed open for a few years after the drinking age was raised to 21, but it was eventually closed. A couple of years ago, the neon sign was sold in a university surplus sale - I remember someone posting the link here on GMG. I hope whoever bought it is taking good care of it!

Finally! I had a feeling the announcement was being timed to coincide with the Football Banquet. Wish I could be there...

I grew up in Stony Brook, and my parents still live there. I even went there for a year (78-79) before I convinced my parents to let me go to North Texas to study music. Stony Brook was started in the '60s with land donated by Ward Melville, who had inherited the Thom McAnn shoe fortune (and who my HS is named after). He had dreams of a "William & Mary" Colonial-style small college. The State University of NY (SUNY) system had other ideas. By the '70s, they were constructing new buildings left & right, trying to create the "Berkeley of the East". What they did create was the ugliest campus in the state. No surprise that when I got to NT, I thought the campus was beautiful (and still do!). They have built Stony Brook into a well-respected school for the sciences, and they have a large teaching hospital, but it's no Berkeley. Back in the 70's, Stony Brook was a pretty radical place - a reputation as a drug school, student socialist & communist organizations, bomb threats almost daily, etc. Students either couldn't give a damn about sports or outright hated it because it was part of "the establishment". The school used to be Div III, and had no stadium. Given the area's history dating back to the revolutionary war, the team name was the "Patriots" (same as my High School). Somewhere in the late '90s, a new president decided to start moving Stony Brook up to Div I, changed the team name to the "Sea Wolves", and managed to get a small stadium built. It looks like it holds all of 5,000 people: Stony Brook Stadium. The stadium is named for a local politician, who undoubted helped them get the funding from the state. I guess they've managed to get to I-AA?! I can't believe we were competing with them for a recruit! Stony Brook's enrollment was around 15,000 back in '78; I don't think it's that much more now. Even though there are plenty of dorms, most of the students are from Long Island, so it has the same stigma as a "Commuter School" as NT.

You forgot to mention his uncanny resemblance to Gary Cooper.

Hey Arkansas, I'm in Row 34. Your wife must be the one with the "melodious" voice . Yes, it's a lot of fun in our section!

My DISH program guide (Sugar Land, i.e. Houston) shows the game will be on ch 447 - one of the alternate channels. I don't know if that will be right for DFW or not. I'll repeat my offer: If anyone in Sugar Land or nearby wants to come watch the game with some other NT alums (and without any Horn fans), send me a PM. It won't be in HD, but I do have a 65" screen.

Never mind Don Henley - let's stick to the '50s & '60s. The Hilltoppers are nobodies compared to Pat Boone and Roy Orbison.

Houston Game Watching Party(ies) For Ark St
NT Drummer replied to NT Drummer's topic in Mean Green Football
No luck getting the game at BWW Sugar Land. I don't know if anyone was able to get it - check out the Frisco - Little Elm thread. I'm glad no one wasted time in 59 traffic only to be disappointed. I need to get my PC back in my home theater room and test out Mean Green Premium. Then I'll invite y'all for future games.
