The state of Texas had the most.

Euss..sory i messed up the response.I'll get herbs pictures up in a few days.How's lew? lol god that is funny.My daughter is getting married down in austin on may 27th.Couldn't invite lew and many of my NT boys. But Robbie G a good friend of Lew will be there.Not sure if you knew Robbie G.He teaches in Garland. I feel bad about not inviting so many of my friends that still live down there but we can have only 150 people and my daughter has been teaching in austin for almost 5 yrs now.Plus the 4 yrs at UT.So she has a big list of her own friends.Plus her husband is from Corpus.. The pictures of herb are pretty powerful.I'm amazed that so few people here never heard of the larkins story. I look back on my days at NT with great memories.Met my wife dribbling a basketball imitating Pistol Pete outside of kerr hall one summer.1st date was to lake Dallas...she was in bruce hall. no AC.it was so hot that summer.I had to go to summer school because i failed Dr Lott's anatomy class.If i didn't go to summer school i would of never met my wife.I failed on purpose..lol Now 35 yrs later,have 4 kids and my oldest is getting married. I'll find out about Lew at the wedding.Can't believe he doesn't come here in gomeangreen..I'll tell Robby to tell him.take care..and thanks for believing in the begining...i did a pretty poor job explaining about herb and some questioned me. but that all worked out..

I will try to get the pictures here posted.I have to have my son do it.Since I'm paying $16,000 a yr for him at East Carolina Univ and his major is computers..he'll do it Herb called me Sunday nite.Again he thanks everyone.I have to write Billy and get more info.Herb hasn't got out of his bed since Jan.He has these sores he's fighting and there from the inside.They come and take x-rays of him and the doctor is watching them closely. He said the TV and sound system are great.He still hasn't mounted it on the wall yet.There was a problem with his wall or the brakets they sent. I look at these pictures of him and sometimes cannot comprehend the incident that happened in Denton,Tx in 1970.I'm a 19 yr old kid at the time and never could imagine something like this could happen.It's 35 or 36 yrs later and when I look at the pictures of him out in his neighborhood in Queens everything seems so nice. He wants to thank everyone but doesn't know how to.He said a day has not gone by where his eyes don't water up thinking of those days back in decemeber and january when these letters started arriving. I looked at Billy E in the backround of those pictures.he is the true hero of this story. He has been at Herbs side since the day of the accident.He was only at North Texas on a b-ball scholarship because of Herb.Billy like me married a Texan and came back to live in NY.His two sons are lawyers in NYC and his wife has now been striken with multiple sclerosis and in a wheel chair. Like Billy said a month or two ago to me..the 2 most important people in my life other them my kids are in wheelchairs. Billy graduated from North Texas and is currently the highest nonjudicial employee in the NYC Court System.Only the judges have more props them him.He has taken care of Herb with the help of herbs mother. So when you look at that guy behind Herb its hard to believe the friendship and love of those two that has never stopped.In this day and age when so many terrible things are happening in the headlines around the world it's nice to know about a small story in Queens,NY that has effected someones life. You all here that became guardians are a chapter in both Herb and Billy's life.I know many of you give me a lot of credit by doing this.And i do apprecaite it but like i said a 1,000 times..all i was...was the messenger. GoMeangreen and the other places that let me post Herb's story were the stamps that sent the message.You people that stuck a few dollars in an envelope blindly and sent them to him are the heroes. The total is 3351.18 and he said he has a few envelopes at his house. I will stop by tomorrow and let you know how we did. He did not call to say that the wall mounts has arrived. Talked to Herb last night for over 30 minuts.It's gettting tired of me trying to explain to everyone how "moved" he is.I'll say this.He is even more "moved" 3 weeks later then when the 1st letters arrived.Last night talking to him has me in tears.Whe he gets all his equipement together he will have to e-mail you all and thank you personally. His TV arrived yesterday.He's waiting for the wall mounts to arrive.Billy has a friend who lives near Herb who will install it for him.When UPS arrived and bought the TV up to his appartment the guy said" look what Santa has for you".Herb said he just sat there and thought this isn't a dream". Herb had his eyes on this TV for 3 months watching QVC.After the 'angels" had delivered the letters ,QVC ran the TV commercial again.Without calling Billy he and his attendent ordered the TV.I think I mentioned Billy was a little taken back because he was going to sit down with Herb and look at some TV's and computers and discuss how he wanted to spend the money.But Billy always said "herb is very independent". It was like a kid going to the candy store for the 1st time. I pasted the TV he bought.As soon as the wall mounts come they will set it up. Hypervion and Billy have talked and Hypervion is looking into what type of computer Herb needs.There is no need to rush and I'm sure they will get one of the best. Billy is going over Herb's today. Not sure what days where in.This was Billy's e-mail last night. Twenty four envelopes and 259.00. This was Billy's e-mail tonight. Todays numbers are 20 envelopes and 192 dollars. That makes our total 189 envelopes and 2750 dollars. Herb said that it feels like GOD moving through people to give out of their hearts. He said it is a blessing and a lesson. Will report to you tomorrow. island I agree.It doesn't matter where it came from.I know of at least 10 Texans that sent something and have nothing to do with NT. But if only 10 people from this site send money and 9 of you put NT down[excluding you] and 300 letters come from all 50 states he might assume that all 300 are from North Texas grads or alumni .Granted it doesn't make any difference but why give him a false impression when North Texas did absolutly nothing for 36 yrs. The NJ Nets and Lou Carnesecca raised the money for his van in 1982. Coach Robbins wouldn't even send me some game film of him[16 mm] in fear he might use it as part of a law suit.When I requested some old games NT's officials said you have to contact the coach.I tracked Robbins down in Oklahoma I think coaching HS ball.But he never sent one single film. NT gave him a black and white TV. And it was 12".They paid his bill only in Dallas for 3 months.They didn't pay his telephone bill.Don't get me started. And the reason he never sued NT was he was also dealing with depression and a few others things.By the time he got his act together statue of limitations set in.[think it was 5 yrs or 7] I'm sorry..I'm bitter and you people are the wrong ones for me to sound off on.My bad. Billy's late e-mail... , Herb turn red in the face watching me open his mail and seeing all the money I kept pulling out the envelopes. His day time home attendant got so emotional that she had to leave work early. don't know where to start..The mail arrived the past 2 days.Over 70-80 letters.I'm going to paste a little of Billy E's email to me. Todays take is 568.00, that gives us a total of 743.00 for two day. He is speechless I think he doesnot want me to see him cry. I am going to leave to let him cry in private. Billy just called me and sent that e-mail out.Herb is speechless.Every letter you all sent had the message.."this is from your guardian angel".Billy said the letters came from all over .Kansas,Colorado,Mizzou,Maryland,NY,NJ,Pa,Conn,and on and on. Billy has been taken care of Herb since he ... graduated from North Texas in 1973.He said today was one of the greatest days in Herbs life. I'm not trying to sound "hokey or corney".What happened these past two days like Billy said last week to me was"this could impact his life". It already has and it's just starting. And you have to remember Herb is the kindest,soft spoken,warm hearted person on the face of the earth. Billy told him the only rule these guardian angels have is the money is for you to upgrade yourself. Billy suggested a "flat screen TV" and Herb just smiled at him.I think thats his 1st choice but we'll wait and see. Tonight it's Christmas Eve and tomorrow it's Christmas.Everyone of you that stuck something in an envelope and sent it to someplace in Flushing NY without any prior knowlege of who it was did something we read about or see on some TV show. What great people and human beings you are.You really don't know what you did.You think you do.The impact on this 56 yr old man who lost everything 35 yrs ago and in the last two days effected him in some way is mind blowing. In the movie Miracle on 34th Street" it's about a Santa Claus worker at Macys in NYC who really believes he is Chris Cringle{Santa] They go to trial to have him committed. There is a line in the movie.."Faith is believing when common sense tells you not to." Just because things don't turn out the way you want them the 1st time you still have to believe in people". I believe in Santa Claus.He has many guardian angels working for him from all over.You people are all about kindness,joy,sharing and love. I wish all you guardian angels a Merry Christmas and cannot thank you enough for what you did.. I'll keep you posted and give everyone updates. On my porch outside my house is a sign. I'm proud of my school.I give to the alumni and sports teams.I worked for Dr Bailey in intramurals for yrs.Being a PE major had Cornelius,Coach Maughan,Miss Angel[folk dance] My favorite teacher was Coach McCain[football ast.] Had Elizebeth Ann Duke in English 101. Now I'm going to turn the tables on you people out there.Who was she.What happened to her.Why was she famos? Anyway please send something to herb.Again no names.Maybe say "your guardian angel from North Texas". Harry,I posted this message at another sports site that talks football,basketball,etc. Over 200 people are sending Herb $5.00 or more. No one knows herb.Half the people don't know where North Texas State oops UNT is. And 2 people respond here.Herb went to North Texas.A student who left a freak'in dorm to practice.He walked from Kerr hall to the mens gym that night.And has not walked since. Will try not to make this too long .. I just got off the phone with an old North Texas buddy of mine,Herb Larkins.I met Herb in 1969.He was a basketball player at NT and a track star.Played two sports.He had a vertical leap of 44"[inches] and was a potential superstar.Lou Carnesecca recruited him at St Johns but Herbs HS grades were lacking.He played HS ball in Flushing,NY.In 1969 he had the 2nd best long jump in NYC history.Bob Beamon was 1st. Lou put Herb at Wharton CC in Houston,Texas.Herb played 2 yrs there but Lou thought the Johnnies were over his head.Herb ended up at North Texas.Was recruited by Wichta,Tulsa,ORU,Bradley,etc.But his high school teammate Billy Etheridge who was also at Wharton wasn't getting any full ride offers.North Texas wanted Herb so bad they offered Billy a full ride.Thats why Herb came to NT. In early Oct , 1970 the NT b-ball players were scrimmaging illegally in the mens gym.Practice didn't start till Oct 12th.But all the NT coaches were up in the top bleachers watching the illegal scrimmage.An incident happened on the court and Herb hit his head.He layed down on the court motionless.My roommate and I were trying to talk to Herb.He whispered..I can't feel anything...I ran to the gym office and called the ambulance.The coaches all hurried out of the gym and left knowing they could get in trouble. Herb has not moved his legs or arms in 36 years.He is a quadripalegic. It would take me another hour to explain everything since.He went into a depression for yrs and never talked. North Texas St gave Herb a black and white TV.That is all.In the last 15 yrs he became a born again christian. He lives in an appartment in Flushing.His Mom is still alive and visits him daily.He gets social sercurity money and has someone from the state in his appartment 12 hours a day. Billy E graduated from NT,married a Texan like me and moved to back to NYC.He is now a Court Supervisor in Manhattan in charge of all the court officers in the justice dept . Billy's 2 sons are lawyers in NY.He takes care of Herb,calls everyday,and visits 2 or 3 times a week. Every Christmas I send Herb a check of $100.As I write this I realize how little that is. In 1982 Lou Carenesecca at the Nets game donated $12,000 to Herb to buy a van with a lift.Dr J also donated money.I have a picture in my office of the two of them.And he still has the van and it drives fine.He needs it for hospital appts,etc. Herb does everything with his straw.He answers the phone,turns on his TV,lets people in his appartment,types,etc. I talked to Billy E and asked what does herb need.He said his mother just bought him a state of the art wheel chair for $7,000.No insurance or anything,she paid for it herself.He has a old TV that doesn't work,computer is 10 yrs old that can't get e-mail. A 1982 van that Billy has under his insurance. Billy said Herb lives a simple life.I asked if Herb had some guardians angels help him out what would he do.Billy quote was "something like that would impact his life." He always talks about a flat screen.But not sure what he would do. Also Mike Shalin a sportwriter of the Boston Herald knows Herbs story and wrote an artice years ago about him in the NY Post.Mikes brother Steve was the person who got Herb to Wharton .If anyone in the Boston area wants to contact Mike he'll vouch about the story.You could come in here and post Shalins acknowlegement. Sorry,I made a mistake in my reply.Cooley,Creston Whittaker was one of the greatest defensive players I ever saw.He was over shadowed by Joe Hamilton who was the greatest player in NT history.Lee Winfield who played for Seattle in the pro's the year before might get some votes as the greatest.Lee just graduated as I came in.Another player by the name of Mean Joe did the same. But my freshman year we had the great basketball team and then the No 1 passing offense in the nation with Steve Ramsey. Don't want to get into the greatest Qb in NT history but its not even close.Ramsey broke 6 NCAA passing records.I know he has been passed by other Qb's at NT but he had the greatest arm.Him and Shanklin were second to Rhome-Twilly[Tulsa] in all time QB-WR..TD's. I was lucky my first two yrs.We had great teams.By my jr. and sr. year we started to slide. I keep in touch with Herb Larkins all the time.Someday I;ll come in here and tell you guys the most tragic story you ever heard. I'm sure there are some of you that remember it.Herb is doing good.Has not moved his arms and legs since that incident in the Mens Gym.And North Texas gave him a 12" black and white TV...don't get me started.

The greatest w/o a doubt has to be the 1970 Louisville game.They were ranked 13th in the nation.John Dromo was the coach not Denny Crum.Crum was still at UCLA as an asst under Wooden. He came the next year and made those comments The Snake Pit was unreal.We went 14-0 at home.We beat everyone. This was my freshman year.Joe Hamilton,Creston Whit..wow. My 1st game was Arizona in the Pit.They came in with two 7'0 and a 6'10 kid.Watching the layup line of the Wildcats was unreal. But we kicked they hell out of them.We beat everyone,Cincy,Drake,Bradley,Wichta,Tulsa,St Louie,etc. We would pack in 4,400 in the Pit.The sound was unbearable.Many times the ref's blew the whistle but the players kept playing. Duke,you coudn't come close to that.Unless you were there..you cannot explain the sound.. Getting back to the Louisville.It was rumored that the winner would get a trip to the NIT's.We beat them and Louisville was picked over us.Louisville's 6'9 center was Mike Grosso a local kid fronm NJ.NIT's brass thought that would bring in more local people into the Garden in NYC.We were devasted.But Cards had Price,Bacon and some other great players. But that night in the game I fell in love with John Dromo the Louiv coach.He was so funny during the game.For some reason we sat right behind the Cards bench.I fell in love with Dromo.He was screaming,yelling for help,making fun of the crowd.Then he did the famos Italian hand sign to the crowd. "up yours" or "ma fa goulo". We were rolling...I yelled to Dromo" your not getting any calls here tonite,coach.He looked right at me and said laughing at me" your right,sonny".I'll always remember that.He looked right at me in the middle of this frenzy crowd. We won 98-80.Blew the No 13th team in the country right out of Denton.The greatest game ever played in the Pit. Over the summer I heard John Dromo had a massive heart attack.He had to resign as coach.Crum took over.The next year when the Cards came to Denton before the game the our freshman team was playing a juco team.Louisville players all dressed in red turtle necks and sports blazers were sitting in the bleachers.Crum was all by himself.I walked over to him and sat down next to him.I asked him how Coach Dromo was doing.He told me he was doing good.The Univ had kept him on as an Intramural dirc or something. I told Coach Crum to tell coach Dromo that there was a fan of his here in denton and wishing him well.Crum looked at me and shook my hand and said" I'll tell Coach that".He also said you can write him a card. Well,I did.I told Dromo you inspired me that night in Denton.Someday I want to coach too. I graduated NTSU in 1973-74 and went back to NY.Became a teacher, basketball coach and athletic dir for 25 yrs. Had great HS teams in NY.In 1995-6 I was named the NY State HS Coach of the Year.In Binghamton NY at the NY Coaches Clinic I was given my award. Who do you think was the presenter to give me the award. Denny Crum.I asked him if he remembered me 30 years ago and he said he did.Not sure if he was telling the truth.He told me Coach Dromo had passed away a few years ago. Life is strange.. I watched a coach in 1970 and said I want to be like him. Who would ever know how things turn out... I met my wife dribbling a basketball in the Kerr hall court yard.She was born and raised in Paris,Texas.Have 4 kids. I gave up coaching and am now a principal of a HS here in NY.I can retire in a couple of years.Maybe down in Texas. The greatest game ever...NT-Louisville It changed my life..
