It will be interesting to see who the MWC feels should get the invite should one come to a DFW school - SMU or UNT. They have relationships with both of us, more with SMU but you cannot ignore UNT's investment over the past few years (all around - not just a coach). GMG

If Offered, Should We Join The Mountain West Conference?

If Offered, Should We Join The Mountain West Conference?
NM Green replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
And there in lies why the MWC might come fast. Think about it. Don't lose the market! The WAC could not maintain a presence in the rich recruiting fields of Texas after TCU and SMU left. They did just fine, but that was when Reno and Boise were building their beasts on the rich Cali talent. The WAC could never put pressure on us to join the league because we always wanted to wait for the CUSA invite. It did not and still does not interest us to join forces with SJSU, USU and Idaho. The MWC could add us and not skip a beat in terms of maintaining a presence in Big 12, Big East and CUSA Country. Rick better make sure the phone is on the hook. If CUSA continues to get raided we will have a chance to land there, but I already am not enjoying the quality of CUSA. It is not the CUSA of old and seems to be losing steam. I like the natural rivals, but if a higher quality conference not named the WAC comes a calling it will be a monster risk to say no. We had better be prepared to say "sure we will open on the blue turf!" Think about it: Air Force - Local and regional military personnel visiting us every other year and annually in bball New Mexico - draws 17k for every bball game right now UNLV - draws 13-16k for every bball game (they had 9k for an exhibition this year that I was at) Colorado State - in the doldrums right now but they have scoreboard on us Wyoming - strange passionate little program with name recognition and they do travel - can't miss that brown) San Diego State - draws poorly but they have a beast of a bball team this year Boise - enough said Reno - rising program that made a national splash last week Fresno - name recognition and consistently strong (like our Troy but has done it longer) Hawaii - name recognition and back on track in football Every program brings something to the table in one of the sports. I don't think we have that in our current conference setup. GMG -
We have never been invited to a conference with foes that would include Air Force, Wyoming, UNLV, New Mexico San Diego State, and Colorado State. These are name programs that would travel (I see it in Las Vegas when WY, CSU, Air Force and NM roll in). Yes it is Las Vegas but like KSU I think they would travel down to the Metro. I have not seen how they travel to Fort Worth now, but the WAC in that form never invited us. The WAC that did invite us included Idaho, San Jose State and Utah State. That is the old Big West. I would like conference mates that include: UNT Reno UNLV San Diego State New Mexico Wyoming Colorado State Air Force Fresno Boise State Hawaii Not to mention, two of those teams are Top 15 ranked. That is a step up. Joining the likes of Idaho, Utah State, SJSU and La Tech do nothing for me. I welcome the TSU and UTSA rivals the same way I am looking forward to the UTA game tomorrow. UTA is a great basketball rival and the Bobcats and Roadrunners could be fun to fight with in a few years. GMG

Agreed on the CUSA being more of a fan favorite destination and better fit, but MWC is stronger even without the Utah schools and TCU. I don't see Houston ever heading west except for the Pac 10. SMU probably doesn't want the MWC, but Jones will flex his muscles and try to get them there anyway (he likes the West). Tulsa has a solid hoops program to present to the MWC, we have the market and alumni base. CUSA will look at us only if SMU leaves. MWC may look at us sooner. What about the Big 12:) We are not the threat that TCU is and we have good bball upside with football future. Send Texas Tech, BYU and UNT to the North and you have: BYU UNT ISU Missouri Kansas State Kansas Texas A&M Baylor Oklahoma Oklahoma State Texas Tech This forces Texas to independance and in returns TCU or Houston down the fold. Go BOLD Mean Green.
-
UNT to the MWC pretty please pretty pretty please! Jones and the Mean Green with trips to the Pit, San Diego, Reno and the Thomas and Mack every year! That is some serious basketball company. Bring Boise and Hawaii into DFW every other year and we will get some good name programs arriving into the Win Mill for their annual beat down. GMG

No, thank you for your service. I went to both the basketball and football game last week and had a blast. Spirit is definitely up and you all have really raised the bar. Stay loyal to the Green. Come back often after you graduate. It only gets better. Go North Texas Go North Texas Go Go!

It is called brand management. My previous hotel responded to every comment on Travelocity, Hotels.com, Yelp, Expedia...good or bad you get a response. We would have made personal calls had we had telephone numbers because you need to cut off any negatives at the head. Love that RV reached out to protect the brand but shouldn't there be an athletic department employee making such contact? Even the negative comments we responded to by saying, "thank you for your thoughts and we apologize we did not meet your expectations..." All feedback positive and negative should be recognized - communicate, communicate, communicate. gmg

I do not see the difference in risk between a Canales who is ready and a DM who came from a losing program. I wanted either a high potential college coach ready to take charge, which is what Canales showed me in a month or a coach from a winning program! Is that really too much to ask for? This oh so important amazing hire and then you crank the jack in the box and it gets stuck. I am sorry I just wanted to be way more excited about this hire than the reality that is. gmg

I don't, but I do know enough about his ability to inspire. I have heard it and seen it transpire. I don't fall for rhetoric and those politicians that can move the masses and then not execute. People either believe or don't believe and Canales had the players believing in a few short weeks. He had me believing watching games on the internet and hearing his passion for this opportunity. Forgive me for wanting to give the guy a shot. I trust my intuition and would never speak so convincingly of someone I did not trust. He is not our coach. I get that. I will be there rooting for my Mean Green always. I will also be cheering for the university who gives Mike a shot. I have been seized shots in my life and am grateful for those who trusted in me. If he lines up against us and beats us down the line, I will congratulate him. It will not have been Mike Canales who made the questionable decision. I would have loved to see him recruit his staff, team and continue to inspire a team, fanbase and community. Good for the program who gives him that shot because he is ready. He is urgent. He will give it his all, which is all I want from my coach. DM may do that. Canales will do that. Stay tuned. gmg

uhhhhh you are ULL, and the team with all the resources that should be banging on the door of the MWC when TCU leaves just let the next great thing go. Wait no, they booted him onto the street and said you are not worthy. If the Green jesus comes in and does what everyone proclaims DM is gonna do in 5 years, why not beat them to the punch. That is why I would look at MC now. If North Texas will get better and will have to be contended with down the line, you better desire to win now. Bring in the coach who wants nothing more than to give the sleeping giant a sedative. gomcgmg

I like the fans that thing football wins grow on trees. what a reality! pass the pipe. GO MC. gmg
-
He also performed consistently at a high level for a few games, oh yeah and almost took down a bowl bound Big 12 in the Fouts Field Finale. Heal well Riley. Stay Thirsty young man. gmg
-
I am confident it will be well scripted and probably handled in Baltimore Colt (in deep of the night) fashion. Maybe one day we will bring back the town halls and Mean Green gathering forums. gmg
-
The only thing better would to see our nationally acclaimed stud running back follow along and burn up the "win" mill. It is coming and this is going to better than a emmy award winning drama. Go MC. GMG
-
I'm a fan! Go Ragin Cajuns. This is going to get juicy. Mike is ready and I wish him all the success in the world. GMG

Canales may be 7 years younger (only) but seems like a world apart in connectivity with the players. With all due respect I have no idea how DM will connect because he is not here yet, but I liked what I saw with Canales and when I trust and believe in someone, I will run through a mountain for them. We had him and now we don't. DM - you are on clock - let's see if you can bring it like Canales did. gmg
-
I guess you had to be there. Dude was OC for the #2 ranked team in the country a few years back. He has been groomed for a head coaching position for decades now. He is young, inspiring and our team played hard and solid for him in 5 short weeks - not 5 years. If I were a program in need of an inspirational leader who has some skins on the wall and is ready to make the next step and prove his worth - I would look at Canales. Then I would schedule North Texas:) gmg

Wow...does Anyone Like The Mccarney Hire?
NM Green replied to NCMeanGreen's topic in Mean Green Football
I sure hope this coach believes in and breathes communication better than this administration does. If he is indeed the Green Jesus and he is loud positive communicative and proud - he might just clash with the people running this show in little D. The fact Canales never had a shot at this gig yet we were told he would, then all Canales did was lay it out without any hope at a real shot - stinks from a leadership point of view. Again I do not plan on waiting 3 years to be good. Hit the Urgency button, sell to me, sell to my community, go get a staff that will execute and deliver and build my trust and loyalty. You do that DM you've got me. You decide to pusyfoot around and build this thing slowly - you will not keep me interested in this regime. Another poster said it perfectly. I am a Texan. I have high standards and require drive, passion, energy and urgency. Walk in the door with that my friend. Some people think UNT operates under a moldy rock and requires approval and direction from SMU. I don't. I have seeing other programs snag high profile coaches in much worse places than the rich grounds of the DFW metroplex. UNT is a plum opportunity for the person who wants it. I can't stand Tony Romo at times because I feel he doesn't realize the opportunity he sits in at the qb of the Dallas Cowboys. The coach of UNT has a dream opportunity and it is a great gig - one that must be seized with zeal, energy, appreciation, excitement and urgency. This goes for the AD position, the President position, any position at my fine Alma Mater. UNT does not play second fiddle to anyone and does not have to. So bring it, yesterday and make it happen. My timer has started - execute, execute, execute. GMG gmg -
Mike Canales Coached His @ss Off Today
NM Green replied to FirefightnRick's topic in Mean Green Football
I don't have to do anything. If DM gets me excited and shows me tangible results, I will be there. Look, I live in Las Vegas and Bobby Haute from Montana has come in re-energized a fanbase. It did not show itself in wins this year as they ended with the same record as the Mean Green. But as a casual supporter I never like the previous guy. I reluctantly went to a game or two when I couldn't make it in for Mean Green games, but this year in the same situation I eagerly headed to Sam Boyd on Saturday nights. Same records different inspirations. The ball is in DM's court to inspire me much like it was in MC's court to build my trust. I thought MC was playing out the hand and he went above and beyond to get me to believe. We will see what DM does and I wish him well. Speak to me as an a alum who has followed this program for 24 years and tell me how you plan to win, why you want to be part of this community, your goals, what you need from me...then I will decide if I support you. I will always support my University but there is one salesperson here and he doesn't live in Las Vegas. By the way I can only imagine what Bobby H. is going to be able to do with his own players in year 2 and beyond. He is young, passionate, a realist, and ready to ignite a dormant fanbase. Sounds familiar. -
I would love to see 35 - 40 points for the Mean Green every game like we began seeing under Canales as HC. Mix that with a defense and you have a power in the making. I just loved watching disciplined football, methodical at points with big play potential. Dislike him or not that is what Canales had us playing over the last month. DM's O coordinator will have to come in an repeat that type of experience for me to "buy in." If he does build that on both sides of the ball I will be excited and on board. I just don't follow with blind faith. I need to see tangible improvements and energy. Life is short and I liked how Urgent Canales was for our program. I just see DM coming in expecting 3 years to get this trainwreck back on track. Not excited about another 1000 plus days of Mean Green build to a 3 win, then 5 win, then 7, win then 9 win season. I wish like heck we would see a DM and Canales combo but i just don't see it happening. I will support Coach C wherever he goes because he will build a winner. I will support him and look forward to watching him develop young men for life and lift a trophy. Hope it isn't a competitor but if it is I will still root for MC. Meanwhile let the rebuilding again - 8 years of it by the time this is all said and done. Urgent.

Dissapointed And Embarrassed To Be An Alumni
NM Green replied to bdan2002's topic in Mean Green Football
All I know is that you would not have had this outrage had you hired: Canales Fran Kragthorpe This guy and only this guy would bring this much frustration and angst. You don't want this from an alum - don't hire a guy from a losing program and expect him to decorate our new palace with W's. Yet you did. So more old school North Texas is what we are dealt and it will be interesting to see it unfold. We are back at below ground zero and we just didn't have to go there - go green go white. -
Different day and age ISU fan. I worry that this coach is not going to connect with his players. That is what Canales was doing so beautifully here at the end. People that think this guy has multiple years to turn this around are smoking something. The wait is over ladies and gentlemen. This team under Canales would have competed and beat some of the same players on the schedule this year, next year. Throw in allowing him the freedom to recruit a staff and bring in his players and dare I say we are bowling next year because everybody is working towards the goal of getting better. Oh yeah a fanbase recharged and supporting at all costs because we hear and see inspiration played out on Saturday afternoons and evenings. We had all of that and now DM has to come in and build the trust with players and fans at lightening speed. No honeymoon here DM. You do not have years to get us to respectability and back into bowls. We are on the cusp of that today while you were living in the swamp.

Rv-How Am I Supposed To Get Behind Dan Mccarney
NM Green replied to UNTMike81's topic in Mean Green Football
81 you are not alone. No matter how much this person dismisses anyone concerned, disturbed and flat out unenthusiastic about this hire, know that you are not the only one that expected more. 1. I wanted coach C because he wanted us and proved he could inspire the program and fanbase. 2. If not coach C I expected a name that would provide that splash we were promised. 3. I never thought I would see a gentleman with a losing record from a lackluster program be "the One" to lead us onto the national stage I am disgusted inside but calm. I know there is nothing we can do at this point but continue to tailgate and create memories with Mean Green friends. In 4 years maybe some of the above 3 goals will be realized. You are not dismissed. You are not alone. Question. Question. Question. Long live the Green Tea Party Express. -
Does Any One Know Rick Villarreal's Email Address?
NM Green replied to MeanGreen01's topic in Mean Green Football
I love all of these folks saying - just get over it. Sit down and be quiet. The decision is made and nothing will bring Canales back into this role. But to say just take it is not how it gets done in this country. Bring on the Green Tea Party Express. GMG
