THis is starting to look like the Locksley tragedy at New Mexico. When you have a chance to fire a bad head coach - do it. GMG

if RV does fire Benford would you go get Fraschilla? I know we love the uTA coach but can we really pry him out of his new arena? GMG

it is so crazy how many games I could have actually made it to this year but just couldn't muster up the energy to drive the 30 miles. The entire situation sickens me. I am ready for these players to go. I am ready for benford to get his players in and prove to us he can coach. without being close to the program, my gut tells me there are several power players on that team that influence the entire squad. benford has fault in not being able to connect with the talent that was left behind. however, when good players quit they can take a titanic size ship down. what a shame these kids will look back at what could have been a magical season. they peesed it away and killed the emotion in a budding program. everyone has some fault in this but all we can do is move forward. 1. get rid of these players 2. give benford 2 more years to assemble his talent and prove he can coach 3. rv - beg your fanbase for patience 4. get ready for a bigger time I only want to watch players and coaches that want to be here and win. Let's get our football program in order with some wins. Boise State never had a very sexy home slate and they did just fine. GMG

Getting BYU early in the season seems to be the recipe for opportunity. Middle has already pulled off nice wins at Ga Tech and others so this could work out well for the Blue Raiders. I do like "Middle" - short sweet and unique in major college football. Go get one for the C-USA. GMG

I wonder if they still call us Runts

A&M already has a tough SEC schedule and while a game with Louisville would be interesting, I don't think it is worth adding another power to the lineup. A&M should only add Texas to its already tough schedule when that day comes. Outside of that I think you force the Ponies to come on down or offer up someone like Idaho, Memphis or New Mexico State. That is true. Most non-Mean Green sports fans call us UNT, at least in my personal experiences. GMG

Schedules/ Divisional Lineups Released Wednesday?
NM Green replied to Side Show Joe's topic in Mean Green Football
The timing is right especially since the MWC identified their new divisions. Here is an excerpt from the Hawaii site: "The Mountain West's directors of athletics announced the formation of two football divisions beginning in 2013, based upon common geographic regions and traditional rivalries, while also creating the league's first football championship game. The new football alignments will feature Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming in the Mountain Division and Fresno State, Hawai'i, Nevada, San Diego State, San Jose State and UNLV in the West Division." Championship game to be played at the winning division's highest BCS ranked team. I see alot of blue turf in the future. UNM preserves many of its storied rivalries, but they cannot be thrilled about losing the rivalry games with SDSU and UNLV. Hawaii and Nevada are coming out of the alignment nicely - they get to miss Boise on select years. GMG -

McMurphy: MTSU and FAU will join CUSA this Fall
NM Green replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
North Texas must take advantage of the 2013 golden opportunity. Granted the competition will intensify, but with La Tech in transition we simply must beat them and score (win) some excellent competitive battles with Rice, ECU (hopefully at home). We need to beat down UTSA, UTEP and Idaho. We will actually have one of the more stable staff's and teams coming into the fall. Seize the green opportunity and all of a sudden people really start looking at us differently. First year CUSA and look what they did! GMG- 34 replies

That is a fairly delicious schedule though. Rutgers has made some noise these past few years and UCONN has excellent name recognition. Mix in some Big 12 and SEC and they are doing alright. GMG

It is interesting because I am in the Islands this week and of course the news about Tae'o has dominated local radio. However, they did mention the SDSU return and divisional split on a talk show and the MWC feels set. I don't hear any kind of potential further expansion talks coming from the far far west. I think they all live: BE, CUSA, MWC, MAC, SBC. GMG

McMurphy: MTSU and FAU will join CUSA this Fall
NM Green replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
There are so many worse places in the world to travel to for an away game than to either hit South Beach for the weekend at FIU or spend the weekend in Fort Lauderdale when at FAU. Grab some Cuban food, play in the sand and root the Mean Green onto another win in Florida - I like our trips out there. Regardless of who we play I recommend SWA out of Love Field to Fort Lauderdale. I always find reasonable flights. GMG- 34 replies

Three reasons I would never be crushed if Arkie State joined us as conference mates one day: 1. Arkst fan insight 2. Arkst fan commentary 3. Red Wolves is genius and glad they went with it Okay a few more: 4. Jonesboro is driveable and I enjoyed the roadie back in the glory days 5. While most people don't, I recognize the history between our programs all the way back to the mid-eighties! Either way have a brilliant day and here is to an even greater year ahead! GMG

UTEP has excellent attendance when they are winning which they have done in the past decade. They also will bring good solid sized crowds to Denton on gameday. Lots of Miners in the Metroplex. They have won a national championship and a recognized name. GMG

Amid defections and uncertain TV deal; Is SMU still committed?
NM Green replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
Yes it is...I found the UCLA Houston, UCLA Texas bouts interesting. The bruins sure do love playing in Texas. UCLA on the upswing in the league might have an even greater influence in discussions or at least get the conference thinking. GMG- 16 replies

I think we should have throwback day in 2013! Think about the revenue opportunities for the school. Sell NTSU shirts, old logo items, bring back some leaders from the past and celebrate our history at halftime. Play some music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Rule #1: 1. Make sure this is a non-televised game - no need to confuse the sheep out there. 2. Create a tagline for the game - Our History Our Pride or A Rich Tradition BSU celebrates its history from the 50's through the ranks of 1AA and into today's college football power. I have seen so many colors, logos, names...and I only started following the Mean Green in '86! I have a lot to learn about our Rich Past. Finally, I saw a 16 ounce glass tumbler at Voertmans the other day with our full fight song on it, including the change U-N-T-Eagles...I would like to see the football leadership - coaches, student presidents, fraternities, alumni associations...talk to the kids at Eagle Camp or whatever we call it. Talk about working together to preserve the pride of our fight song. Get them to practice it and even talk about how to drown out anyone who disrespects the fight song. It would be like turning the tide against the idiots and getting students to organize for tradition. This could also be talked about in freshman orientations... GMG

Future of Big East conference remains in flux
NM Green replied to Harry's topic in Mean Green Football
The more I think about SDSU they may choose to stay in the NBE and carve out their own identity. Remember TCU and Boise were always tied together. Well now SDSU and Boise seem to be tied together primarily due to region versus performance. But to me Boise is more interested in regional rivalries and they are still the golden child of college football. They don't have anywhere to go other than to BCS games or the Big 12. SDSU does not have that luxury. They are still an unknown in football but bring it in hoops. I would listen too if I were SDSU and who knows they may choose to align with the national conference afterall. GMG -
No self pity/doubt allowed. We have a fine University who simply needs to get to work. If we all do something to contribute to funds, attendance, exposure, influence, we will continue to do wonderful things in the future. GMG

What I don't distress about in our current situation is that we automatically have a better more equal image: MWC - seen as premier league outside of the big leagues CUSA - indifferent Big East - terrible image Sun Belt - same poor image MAC - decent image - below MWC above CUSA It is much much easier to rise out of a league that nobody is viewing as good or bad. It is simply there. The Big East is viewed as a tragic league now. Those programs are going to battle that image problem much like we did in the Sun Belt over the next decade. The Sun Belt can only continue to win and play with a chip on its shoulder. CUSA with wins by its members FAU, FIU, North Texas, La Tech, UTSA, Rice, Tulsa, UTEP can raise the profile of the conference more easily. Further we are all chasing the same apple. Mean Green it doesn't matter where you live - just get there! GMG

My only beef in this thread is that their stadium is nicer than ours. I liked their stadium but Apogee it was not. We've got a gem in Denton! GMG

All last nights "championship" game proved....
NM Green replied to trussbussdad's topic in Mean Green Football
Just love all the SEC is - rabid fan bases, football is religion, pure rivalry hate, a conference that acts as one without every member looking to leave. I was the only bama fan at the party last night. I like high standards and SEC basically states - raise your game Oregon, Stanford, Notre Dame, K-State... No football prowess redistribution here! GMG -
The MWC has the luxury of considering quality at this point. The standings as they enter MWC play are sick: 6 Top 50 RPI teams 6 programs with 12 or 13 wins 1 undefeated I just don't see the league clamoring for SMU and Houston to bring their vaunted programs to the league. It will mess up their geography, rivalries...SDSU, Boise, BYU make complete sense. They will not make the 16 team WAC mistake again. I personally will not be sad if I never see the Mean Green line up across the field from Oregon and now A&M. Anyone else you can have a good half and we have against K-State, LSU, Alabama...but you are flat out taken to the woodshed and embarrassed when the Ducks and Aggies get a hold of you. That is even if you are a very solid smaller program - see Arkie State. I love the Aggies watching from afar. I think you need to play them often like Stanford to make headway. They are like the antithesis of Air Force. Texas A&M doesn't need any justification for joining the SEC. Down in Aggieland SEC flags fly proud and getting those rabid fanbases visiting College Station is going to do well for them for decades to come. GMG
